Chapter two - Links and Connections

Hank had questioned Connor about where the hell he was, but the android just explained he lost track of time, which wasn't a lie, but he didn't want to admit he was 'staring again. They both had cases to file with another loose and rouge deviant who may have attack a police officer...may being used lightly.

It was a good hour later when Connor felt someone hovering over his shoulder, though he could tell who it was due to her present being absent before and also being one of few women working in the office at her height, it was easy to deduce. He stopped what he was doing and turned in his chair to look up at her, her eyes over the rim of her glasses, looking at him patiently waiting for him to finished it seemed.

"Detective Connor, right?" She asked, a soft expression crossing her features. He was confused she knew his name, they had not spoken at all since she arrived. "I am inspector Johnson, I was wondering if I could borrow you? If that is ok with you for me to pinch your partner, lieutenant Anderson?" She asked. Hank looked up and then to Connor, almost giving him a 'you've been caught' look.

"Sure, just bring him back in one piece." He waved them off, Connor wasn't sure but followed all the same. She made her way around the room to the evidence room. Aaron met the pair and smiled.

"Hello Detective Connor, My name is Sergeant Aaron Collins, I am Inspector Charlie Johnson's partner." Connor nodded greeting him. Charlie made her way down the stairs and both the androids followed her down. Opening the room up, she placed her hand down to unlock the console and the amount of information that popped up with overwhelming. Charlie sighed and pulled back and just scanned over all the information.

"Now I know this is going to be asking a lot of you since you have all of your own work to be dealing with," she turned and looked at the RK800. "but seeing as Aaron isn't aligned with the United States database yet, we find ourselves in a bit of a predicament." she looked a little defeated but straightened up, her eyes locked onto Connor who just stared back. "The person we are looking for is an android...but we have no idea what model...I was hoping you would be able to identify one for us?" with a flick of her wrist, the book she held was now opened and a picture...no a drawing. A man, or an android, mid-twenties, being in pencil it didn't show colour but with the light shading, Connor could see it was meant to be a tanned man, Hispanic with dark hair.

"How do you know it is an android?" Connor made his around and looked over the evidence collected. Videos, security footage, obscure pictures of a hunched over man and statements.

"We didn't," Aaron piped up, moving around too and located a file, opening it for Connor. "until we received a lead…" He frowned and saw the crayon drawing, blue….with a small dot on the side of his head. He glances at Charlie who had pinned her drawing on the wall, starting to pace as she glared at it with intent.

"and this is….proof?" Connor sounded unmoved and unconvinced, it was a child's drawing, nothing more right? Charlie looked over and smiled, it was small but also sweet.

"Correct, children have incredible imagination, and like to elaborate…he would not have added such a detail if he didn't think it would mean nothing...but I digress," she sighed and turned back to the board. "please take the file...if it becomes a dead end, no harm was done...but it is it means that Devons older sister is no closer than she is now…their mother, Mrs Thornton is slowly losing hope..." she let out a sigh again. Aaron patted Charlie on the shoulder and then headed up the stairs. Leaving Connor and the inspector alone… "Why were you watching my interaction with the boy?" she asked quietly, now fully turned to look at him, eyebrow cocked. Connor stood quietly, his face neutral but inside he was a little shocked...He was sure he was quicker than that.

"I was….intrigued about your working style." He admitted, now looking through the file slowly, wondering what other information it held. With a soft hum, she tilted her head to regard him a little.

"I know the girl we are looking for is almost old enough to be considered an adult in the UK, but what is your experience with a young person? Have you had to deal with a traumatised child detective?" She queried and waited patiently. Connor thought about it and thought back to the little girl on the roof with the android threatening to jump, then thinking to Alice and how that could have been different for her?

"No, not the after effects of it, I was on my very first case and…." programmed to follow the rules and orders of Amanda...he had not thought about her in a very long time, not since he struggled against her take over. "I stopped a deviant from shooting her at her home….I didn't stay after I completed my mission...that was before…" Charlie moved over to the android, making him stand up straighter.

"I am impressed with the evolution of the life in the states, it has been strides ahead in so many things, but has only leapt in at the deep end for the liberation of the androids…" she looked over his face as if scanning him. Connor blinked and actually scanned her, but couldn't get past looking at her eyes as there was a throat cleared at the door. Both droid and woman looked over to see Hank leaning against the door frame.

"Connor we have a case, you can play tea party later… no offence." Hank nodded to Charlie who only laughed and nodded back politely.

"None taken lieutenant, I was just about to head off as well...nice to meet you Connor." she smiled back and headed out of the room...Connors eyes following,

"You too Charlie…" he replied quickly but scowled at Hank as he only smirked at him, also glancing up the stairs, watching her hips away. "What?" he sounded defensive as he started to make his way out of the evidence room. Hank shrugged in reply before heading out. The lieutenant said nothing more about it, but Connor could see out the corner of his eye the smirk playing on his face.

-oOo-

"And I've told you no. I don't need help on my case, I've already got someone helping me." Charlie sounded exasperated, pouring the pot of water into her tea cup. Gavin leant on the counter next to her. Moving around him as she tried to make her beverage without stewing it, though the other detective was relentless.

"But wouldn't you want a red blood American to be watching your back while you travel the wild city that doesn't sleep." He laughed leaned a little further towards her as she looked up at him, an adorable frown on her face. She used the spoon she had stirred her tea with to push on his chest.

"One, I've been to America for a couple of weeks, I don't need a guide. Two, I don't care if it's red blood or blue blood watching my back….and three, the city that never sleeps is New York….Good morning…" she turned on her heel and heading out of the break, throwing her spoon into the sink as she did. She was getting quite sick of Gavins intensive flirting….He wasn't subtle about his advances….

It had been a few weeks since speaking with Connor about her case, they didn't really talk and most contact was by placing files on each other's desks...she had found one under a cup of tea once which made her smile, a small 'thank you' post-it note was stuck on the next one she passed over. With his deviant nature now giving him free will, she was impressed by how much respect he still had for his job and role in the station. Now and again, she would see Hank stick up for the RK800, but only when Gavin dug at him...why did the other detective hate him so much?

Moving towards her desk, she glanced up and frowned to see post waiting for her. Placing her cup of tea down, she swapped it for the brown package. She was surprised it had a bit of weight to it and sat down at her desk, opening it and again gave a small frown as she read the handwriting, screwing up the attached letter and pushing the rest of the post away from her as she went to focus on her work, not even entertaining the idea of opening the second part of the contents...how dare-

"Road trip." Came a voice from behind her, turning to see Hank with his hands in his pockets and looking to the door. "Come on, times ticking.." he tilted his head back to her, his grey hair softly falling a crossing his forehead. She pointed to herself comically before smiling.

"Me? I thought you were working on the new crime unit for androids?" Charlie questioned as she started to pack her bag, a clean black messenger bag with a faint pattern of diamonds going over the flap, her phone, keys and tablet slid in. He shrugged and led her out of the station, hands in pockets as he ignored the people they passed. She slung her coat over her bag and her heels clicked on the floor as they walked.

"Well since your perp seems to be an android, it is only fitting we invite you to a possible sighting of the fella."

"I guess that makes sense, thank you…" Charlie gave the older man a small smile "But perp? Isn't that originally from the old 1940's gangster films?" She teased and quickly sent Aaron a message, saying she was out on the case with Hank. He replied just as quickly, telling her to be careful. 'Wait, we?' she thought and looked up as they walked quietly to the car, Connor leaning on the car stoically with his arms crossed, watching the two exit the office.

"Inspector…" He nodded politely and moved around the car. Charlie smiled and went to get in but watched Connor open the car door and wait, she paused watching him for a moment. Their gaze locked for a moment and she felt her face flush, oh, he was waiting for her. Moving a little hesitant at first, she awkwardly pushed her glasses up her nose a little more and went to step into the car, but first looked up to the android, smiling a little.

"Thank you, detective…" She said quietly before ducking in and sitting down in Hanks beat up motor. Connor took a second before he closed the door and also entered the car too. Hank giving Connor a weird 'the fuck?' sort of look in the rear view mirror before speeding off down the road to their lead.

-oOo-

It was about half an hour later as Hank pulled up to the large apartment building, it was a modern build with large windows for each occupant. It was lavish with an expensive air to it, coming across as a higher class of clientele than what might be seen in the other parts of the city. Looking up, Charlie was looking out of her window as the lieutenant parked up out front, she tilted her head and saw that this building was almost in the clouds, it could be compared to the old 'Shard' building in London. That was not really in use anymore for its original use, more for the tourists to post with, but why you would its was beyond her, it wasn't a particularly pretty building. Charlie mused on this for a moment before going to push on the door handle to get out, it was only then she realised it was already open. Looking up, Connor was again holding the door for her but looking up at the building. Charlie felt a little awkward again and slid out of the seat again, giving the android another smile.

"You don't have to do that for me Connor.." She admitted quietly to him, Hank getting out now with a lazy stretch, already on his way in. Connor regarded her for a moment.

"I've been researching, looking into British customs and behaviours to try and understand you more. Holding doors open is one of a few ways to show respect and be polite." He sounded like Aaron listing off facts as he normally did. Charlie had to smile at the sentiment.

"You can just ask me that stuff you know? And did your research also bring up the fact that men wear bowler hats and walk with canes?" She laughed to see the confused look on his face. "But thank you for being a gentleman." With that she headed off to find Hank, Connor following, if not a little annoyed he might have been looking into a history of the UK and not the current time now.

The tape around the doorway fizzled a little as the trio walked through it, a number of reporters trying to follow in or trying to take pictures as close as they could, but were held back by the police holding position. Charlie looked to them, then their guns, glancing around and noticed how many were armed, or should she say how many weren't, she could only count two. She also noticed both Hank and Connor were both carrying pistols too, and she wasn't sure if that made her feel better or worse. They made there was to the elevator and waited for it to take them to the twentieth floor, Connor started to fidget with something and flicked it from one hand to the other. Charlie snuck a look and realised it was a coin being flipped and caught, catching it between his index and forefinger. "That is rather clever," She commented, looking forward as Connor looked to her, one brow raised. "How your able to judge the distance, speed and have the reaction to catch it, though I guess you have the advantage." She mused and looked up at him, he gave her a small smile that was more of a twitch of the corner of his mouth. Hank sighed.

"Don't do that, it will go to his head." He took a deep breath and when the elevator stopped, he shrugged his shoulders and headed out. Connor waving his hand out to her, allowing her to exit first, which she accepted with a smile and a nod.

Leading them down a corridor, Hank showed his badge to be let through with the two following behind, they were allowed entry to the apartment. It was huge, almost as if it were to imitate a penthouse, this was bigger than her house back in London Charlie thought, pushing up her glasses further on her nose. But as she began to take in the details, she could see the place has been ransacked, tables covered in papers, draws left wide open with clothes and things laying over the floor beneath them. A robbery? Or just searching for someone?

She was then introduced to the man in front of them, a large man with a grey moustache. Looking up only slightly as he wasn't a very tall man, she shook his hand in greeting.

"Detective Ben Collins Miss?"

"Inspector Charlie Johnson, nice to meet you." She finished and withdrew her hand, putting them in her pockets and looking about. "So, the verdict about what has gone on here?" She asked, still taking in the room piece by piece. A couple lived there, no children items so possibly just dating, very modern and expensive, definitely for looks and not for the warm feel people would assume you'd want in a home.

"Other than what you can see for yourself and the security footage, just looks like a good old fashioned break in, but the android that did it seemed to be on the phone with someone, maybe taking orders from someone else who knew the owners…" Det Collins offered and lead the three of them to the office in the apartment, pointing at the screen that was on the security footage outside and in the residence. Connor moved over to the screens on the left and placed his hand on the console, his face twitching a little before pulling away and looking to Hank and Charlie.

"The intruder appears to be a model AP700, mainly an android designed to take care of the household, male in build, tanned with dark hair, he didn't seem to have any other unique features that I could use from the video. But he does hold a remarkable resemblance to the drawing you produced inspector Johnson." Connor raised his hand and showed a copy of her drawing she had shown him the other day, realising he wasn't wrong, so they were connected? Charlie turned back to the screen and skipped it back to see the android walk into the building, a beanie hat trying to cover his hidden LED, but it was still shining through a little. She squinted and zoomed onto the phone as he turned to look around, trying to catch a glimpse of the screen, not able to make any name or number.

"One of the owners was home and locked up in one of the bathrooms when we were called, the guy must have not realised these fancy places have phones in there." Collins sounded amused but still help a stern expression on his face. "She's in the main room if you want to speak to her. Names Amelia Evans, the boyfriend has also been called." Charlie was the first to move and head off into the other half of the apartment as the men spoke about other anomalies in the break-in. The woman, young, pink skin tone with mousy brown hair hanging around her face as she held it between her hands, eyes raw from crying and shaking from trauma. A female officer was trying to calm her down as the British inspector walked across the room, avoiding the broken glass dining room table as she did, to take over. They swapped places and Charlie sat on the coffee table across from the woman and smiled softly to her, offering her the box of tissues. The woman gave a small forced smile back as she gratefully took another tissue, her tears still collecting in her eyes.

"My name is Inspector Johnson, I'm here to help with the investigation on who broke into your home, Miss Evans." She informed her, to which the woman nodded, taking a deep breath and sitting up. "Do you remember what happened? What you were doing before the attack?" She spoke softly, holding the woman's hands in her hers to offer some comfort.

"I was in the kitchen cooking, it's my year anniversary living with Harry," She let out a soft sad laugh "Nice surprise right?" She wiped her eyes and took another breath, calming down a bit more. "And there was a knock at the door, I went to answer it and this….this…..man! Shoved past me and started pulling things apart! Throwing everything around. I scream for him to get out and he grabbed me by the arm, placing a gun at my head and dragged me to the bathroom….I d-didn't know what h-he was going t-to do...I th-thought he'd-" She started to break down and went to pull her hands away but Charlie held them firmly and moved to crouch down in front of her, the woman's eyes scrunched up tightly.

"Hay Hay," Charlie whispered and used one hand to brush her hair out of her face, this woman was so scared, she had reverted to how a child would hyperventilate when they would cry. "It's ok, I'm here, no one's going to hurt you now ok?" This was not fit to protocol, too personal and much to much contact, but that's what this woman needed, comfort, stability, at least until her boyfriend arrived to take over. The woman looked up at Charlie who smiled at her, nodding it was ok and that she was safe. Amelia calmed and continued.

"After he locked me in the bathroom, I ran to the phone and waited for you guys to arrive, it felt like hours, but turns out only to be forty minutes." She sniffed and cleaned her face up again. Charlie sliding back on to the coffee table, looking up to see Connor inspecting the room, looking for any trace of where he might have gone or what he had been looking for. She did catch him looking over a few times as she continued her soft questioning of the woman when a man came rushing in.

"Amelia!?" he called and rushed over, but froze in place, the woman looked up and sprinted to the man, arms wrapped around his waist, crying into his chest. But as he held her, his eyes glued on the inspector, her mouth agasp….

"Dr Harry Watts?" Charlie asked and stood, watching the man with a completely bewildered expression. Connor moved over to the inspector and Amelia looking weepy but confused between the two.

"Honey, how does she know your name?" Connor did a once over before looking to Charlie again, her face now turning icy.

"You know this man?" The android whispered quietly and subtly. Charlie straightened her shirt with a formal tug and scowled, the man looked like he was going to beg but it was too late.

"I am currently working with his son Devon, and wife, to find his daughter."
