ALLY:

I was riding the bus to Austin's neighborhood and listening to Disney songs on my iPod touch. Yes, I was a fucking child at heart, and I loved Disney. In fact, it was hard to think of a Disney movie I didn't like. My favorite Disney movies were definitely a three way tie between Mulan, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King. I couldn't wait to see Austin and surprise him because I was sure he was bored out of his damn mind being at home sick all day. He had texted me at like seven thirty in the morning, asking me to text him any homework we had.

My iPod case was a bright red one with white polka dots. My lock screen was of Trish and I embracing each other at our Middle School graduation in our graduation gowns and flower leis. My home screen was of Austin and I last year at the Marino High halloween dance and costume contest and we were dressed up as Finn and Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time. I was on the bus for a good fifteen minutes before I got to Austin's house and then I hopped off the bus, and it was not even five minutes after I got off the bus when I took my earbuds out of my ears and I wrapped my iPod up with them and put them in my purse. I made it to the Moon residence and I rang the doorbell and Austin answered it.

He looked really adorable with his short, tousled blonde hair, and he was in his pajamas- a green t-shirt and black and red Walking Dead pajama pants. He had a SpongeBob Squarepants throw blanket around his neck and shoulders. For a sick person, he gave me a pretty friendly smile.

"Aww, hey, Ally,"

He lightly giggled and held out his arms for an embrace.

I said,

"I'm glad you're not contagious so I can hug you."

"Me too,"

I said.

"You look tired."

My guy best friend smiled wryly at me.

"Yeah, I was really restless last night. I only got like four hours of sleep because my ear hurt, I had ringing in it and I was dizzy."

I hugged him tightly and I followed him into his house, walked into the living room and sat down besides Austin and I discovered what he was watching on the TV and to be quite honest, I was having a hard time maintaining a straight face. He was watching Teen Mom.

"Austin! You're watching Teen Mom?!"

He said,

"Hey, blame Trish. She got me hooked on this show. It's become my new guilty pleasure. What's yours?"

I said,

"I don't have one."

Austin smiled at me ironically.

"Yeah, right. You totally have one, Ally. Don't lie."

Austin was right- I was full of shit. I was blatantly lying to his face about having a guilty pleasure. Most of what I watched were Doctor Who, Supernatural, Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey and Glee. I was the epitome of a geek and a nerd. I guess, if I had to pick a guilty pleasure, it would be those cheesy Disney Channel sitcoms like Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place. I remember that back in like fourth or fifth grade, Trish and I loved Hannah Montana and we used to have little karaoke parties where we would sing along to the songs. I said to Austin,

"OK fine. Maybe one or two."

I wanted to change the subject. Austin had been sick all day with an ear infection and I had been concerned as hell for him.

"How did you get an ear infection?"

He said,

"Well, this week at school in Phys Ed, we're on the swimming unit and we went to the nearby community pool on Tuesday. You know, the one that's like a five minute walk from school? Anyway, I was in the pool and I was a dumbass because I forgot to remove the extra water from my ear and it got infected. My mom gave me ibuprofen but it only aggravated the pain and made it worse, and my ear infection came with a fever, too, so she kept me out of school today and brought me to the doctor."

I said,

"Aww, poor baby,"

in a baby voice with a slight giggle.

"You sound like my mom, Ally. When I'm sick, she uses that as an excuse to baby me."

I snickered and smirked at him.

"But do you blame her? She's your mommy and she loves you."

"I condone her treating me like a baby for that because I'm sick. I feel like shit. So, what happened at school today?"

I said,

"Well, one thing you missed was in Algebra when Trish drew a schlong on Dez's forehead while he was asleep and Ms. McCarthy was not happy about it, so she made a racist derogatory comment to her, and then Trish cussed her out. Now Trish is in detention for it."

"I have to be honest, I don't blame Trish for cussing her out. I don't like Ms. McCarthy either. She called me a dumb retard one time for asking her to explain how to do a problem in class."

"Yeah, Ms. McCarthy is definitely not a nice person."

In walked Austin's mom, carrying a Target bag. I heard her say,

"Hi,"

in a cheerful way. I said,

"Hi, Mrs.- I mean, Mimi."

I would call his mom Mrs. Moon, but she encouraged me to call her by her first name- "Mimi," because I was clearly partial to her.

"Hi, Ally. How are you?"

She put the bag down on the ottoman and she allowed me to come over and give her a hug.

"I'm great. It's nice to see you, Mimi."

"Great to see you too, Ally. It was really sweet of you to come over to keep Austin company."

I said,

"It's why I came over here, actually. I was sure he was dying of boredom from being sick."

Mimi laughed and she came over to Austin and she looked at him sympathetically, stroking his blonde hair that matched hers.

"Hi. How's my baby?"

He looked up at her.

"I'm fine. My ear hurts, though."

"Which one hurts again?"

Austin said,

"It's my left one."

Mimi smiled sympathetically.

"Lucky for you, Mommy has your antibiotic. There were a few things I needed from Target, so I killed two birds with one stone and got your medicine from Target with the things I needed. What you have to do is lie with your infected ear up, and I'll apply the ear drops and then you have to lie on your side with your infected ear up for ten minutes. You have to take five drops a day for the next ten days."

Austin nodded groggily. I asked Mimi,

"Mimi, who covered your class today?"

For a living, Austin's mom taught fourth and fifth graders teacher at Southside Elementary School. His dad, Mike, or who many of us called Dr. Moon, was a doctor at Miami Rescue Mission Clinic. Mimi said,

"I called Karolee, my classroom aide last night and I asked her to cover my class. Thanks for reminding me, Ally, I should ask her how it went for her."

"You're welcome,"

I giggled.

Mimi asked me,

"I gotta show you some pictures I got of Austin while he was at the doctor."

"I'd love to see those!"

I was excited for this. I watched Mimi pick her white iPhone 4s covered in a Pink Otterbox case. She showed me a picture of Austin while he was nuzzling against her shoulder, another picture of him sitting on the doctor's table while a nurse was taking his temperature and another picture of a doctor looking in Austin's ear with an otoscope.

"Aww, poor Austin."

"Yeah. Up until he was three, Austin would get ear infections so much that it got to the point where we wouldn't even make doctor appointments for him anymore. We would just bring him right in."

I said,

"Aww, that's not fun."

I heard my phone vibrate in my purse. I got a text from my mom. The text said,

"Hi, Ally. I'm thinking of ordering mexican food for dinner tonight. Is that OK?"

I texted,

"Yeah. I'm at Austin's house. I should be home in like 20 minutes."

"See you then."

"I should probably get going. My mom probably wants me home soon. Austin, I hope you get better and I had fun hanging out with you, and Mimi, it was nice to see you, too."

Austin stood up from his spot and I gave him a tight hug. I did the same to Mimi, picked up my backpack and my purse and I waited for the bus and got on.
