(Friday morning; the next day)
It was almost the weekend; it was Friday. Friday's were Mia's easiest days, class wise. She only had Ancient Runes in the morning and was free for the rest of the day. When Mia woke up that morning, Lucy was still in her bed, mainly because she did not have a class first thing in the morning and if she missed breakfast she could always just run down to the kitchens. But the first class always begun at nine and breakfast was served from six to eight. As it was only seven Mia got herself ready for the day and began the descent to the Great Hall.
Last night trying to learn how to fly on a broom was not as bad as Mia first thought it was going to be. She did have a slight panic attack, but that was to be expected on her account. She was only hoping that maybe Fred would be willing to continue to try to teach her. Of course he would be busy with his own schoolwork and with quidditch practices maybe he wouldn't want to teach her. Maybe it was only a one time thing.
She arrived at the Great Hall half an hour before eight and sat at her respective table. At breakfast students did not always abide the rule to sit at their respective house table. Lunch also did not seem to follow that rule but nobody usually ever dared to eat dinner at another house table. The Great Hall was full of the younger students who had more classes to take than others. Sixth and seventh years did not have a requirement for classes, only that of their future occupations, and therefore usually opted to have five classes or less. Mia was not one of those students and thus her schedule was almost always occupied with classes except for those lovely Fridays. There were a few Hufflepuff sixth years at the table and she smiled at them. But Mia was not a very talkative person especially in the morning. She grabbed a piece of toast and had a cup of tea along with it. Mia took her Ancient Runes book out of her bag and began to reread the chapter Professor Perks has assigned on Monday while munching on her toast.
Elena Finnegan, a fellow sixth year Hufflepuff entered the Great Hall and sat beside Mia grabbing an apple. "Are you just reading the assignment for Runes, Mia? That's not like you." Elena also took Ancient Runes this year and was in Mia's class.
"Course not," Mia smiled. "Just rereading. I took notes once I read it on Monday but"
"I know Mia, you like to be thorough" Elena finished her sentence. "But it's Friday and Perks is always extremely easy going when we have him Friday mornings." Elena went to bite into her apple but a hand grabbed it from her.
"Morning." Fred greeted after swallowing the chunk of apple he'd bitten.
"That's disgusting Fred." Elena scolded and picked up a new apple.
"Why are you up so early Fred?" Mia asked.
"Oh I've got Charms this morning and didn't want to be late again." Fred said. "I'm assuming you've got Runes?" Nodding towards the book that was now on the table.
"Yes, but I've got to run to the library before class. So I'll be off." Mia said grabbing her school bag and beginning to leave the Great Hall.
Mia didn't necessarily need to go to the library. Most of her work was completed, and she did have the rest of her day to finish any left over work if she wanted to. But Mia didn't have a lot of friends, and talking to other people she didn't really know or get along with was not her expertise. So she came up with an excuse to leave because leaving was better than making a fool of herself in front of Fred Weasley, which she knew she ultimately would. Once she reached the library, she took a seat at her normal table and began looking over her notes from the chapter for Runes. But she was stopped when Fred Weasley took a seat next to her. "Are you stalking me?"
Fred laughed, "Course not. If I wanted to know where you were I'd just look at the map." Mia looked confused. Most of the school knew about the Weasleys' and Potters' secrets but Mia never paid any attention to them before, so she had no idea what map Fred was speaking of. "Anyway, I was wondering if you wanted to give flying another go today. I've got free period after charms and lunch if you're up to it?"
"Are you sure you want to take me out flying again, after last night?" Mia asked.
"Yeah why not? I promised I wouldn't give up on you, didn't I?"
"Yes, but I could always ask Lucy, who was supposed to do it in the first place." Mia assured him. Honestly, why would Fred want to waste more of his time on her?
"If you don't want to it's fine. But we could go before dinner tonight."
"I'd like that. Thank you." Mia said. "We better go. You don't want to be late to Charms."
"I'll meet you in the Great Hall after lunch?" Fred asked.
"Sounds good. Meet you there." Mia said and they split ways after leaving the library.
Mia arrived early to Runes, as usual, and took a seat at a middle table where Elena would sit next to her. Middle tables were good seats. They were not the front seats, meant for the extremely eager students, and they were not the back seats, meant for the uncaring students. Middle tables meant ready to learn and caring enough about the class. Students came entering the classroom. This Ancient Runes class was not a particularly large one. There were about fifteen students from all four houses: two Hufflepuffs, five Slytherins, five Ravenclaws, and two Gryffindors, Albus Potter and Rose Weasley. When Professor Perks came out of her office and into the classroom, she announced that the class would be working on puzzles that would need to be translated into English. For every puzzle completed and translated, the students would earn a chocolate frog. The students were allowed to work with their partner at their table. Elena and Mia paired up, and immediately began working on the puzzles once Perks said 'go!' Mia worked on one while Elena worked on another. The others seemed to be using this strategy as well and forty minutes later once time was up Elena had completed six puzzles while Mia had completed eight, earning the pair fourteen chocolate frogs.
"So as Potter, Weasley, and Malfoy completed the most amount of puzzles in the class," Perks began. "Which I suspect is because they had three people, they each earned a pack of sugar quills. But Finnegan and Bryce only had two and had the second highest amount done therefore earning a box of sugar quills as well. Now off you go. I'm sure you all have better things to do on this fine Friday." Perks said and allowed the class to leave a bit earlier than usual.
(Lunch)
After Runes Mia spent her time in the warmth of her common room listening to the latest Galloping Gorgons record. She eventually fell asleep in one of the armchairs and when she woke she realized she was covered in a yellow and black blanket; one of her fellow Hufflepuffs must have placed it on her, they were those kind of people. But when she woke she looked at the clock on the wall next to the former Herbology professor's picture. 12:30. If Mia didn't get up now she would completely miss lunch and thus miss Fred who promised to meet her in the Great Hall. With that realization Mia jumped out of the chair and began to walk to the Great Hall. Upon going up the stairs she bumped into Lucy.
"Oh hey Mia. Where have you been hiding?" Lucy asked.
"I fell asleep in the common room." Mia said dismissively. "Anyway where have you been hiding? Why did you send Fred last night rather than come yourself?"
"I'm deeply sorry about that. Ross asked me to meet him in Hogsmeade last night and I haven't seen him since Christmas." Lucy looked extremely apologetic. "But how did it go with Fred? Did you manage to get on a broom?"
"Yeah." Mia smiled. "We're supposed to go practice again in like twenty minutes actually so I'm off to get some food, I'm starved."
"Oh. I just ate but do you mind if I join you?" Lucy asked.
"Course not. Let's go before we miss lunch completely."
Once they finally arrived to the Great Hall, taking longer than necessary since Lucy wanted to dump her cloak in their dormitory, they sat at their table and grabbed some food before it disappeared. Mia was right about to take a bite of her chicken sandwich when Fred came over. "I thought you were going to ditch me Bryce."
"Why would I ditch you, if you're the one helping me?" Mia asked with an eyebrow raised.
"Don't know." Fred shrugged. "Maybe you changed your mind about the whole," he lowered his voice "flying thing."
"I'm still in, if you are."
"Great! I was thinking you could learn how to do a Sloth Grip Roll." Fred laughed.
"A what? Is that dangerous? How about we just focus on actually flying before we try any fancy tricks." Mia pleaded.
"Well hurry up and finish that sandwich Bryce! We've got some skills to learn."
Mia took her time eating her sandwich, trying to delay getting back on her broom. She went back to her dormitory after eating to collect her broom and then met Fred in front of the Great Hall. "I'm ready."
They both made their way to the quidditch pitch when Fred began discussing what the two of them would try to accomplish that afternoon. After getting his own broom from the broom shed, Fred said they were going to try to hover again and for Mia to remember to slowly lift her feet off the ground. Mia took her stance on the broom and slowly, but with a little force, she kicked off the ground and hovered seven feet in the air. Fred smiled and congratulated her. "Now slowly lean forward and go straight." He instructed. Mia listened to him and the broom flew began to fly forward. Fred who was also in the air was flying right alongside of her. "Now you want to stop. But you don't want to jerk the broom, so start sitting up straight." Again Mia listened and as she sat straight the broom began to slow down until she was once again hovering. "See you're getting the hang off it. "Now if you lean back the broom will go in reverse." Mia leaned back a bit too quickly and began flying backwards much to fast for her liking. "Bryce sit up straight and you'll hover." Thankfully Mia was not freaking out like before and was able to make the broom hover. "Now, Bryce breathe and try it again. Slowly this time." Slowly leaning back, Mia began to move backwards and then she began leaning forwards and flew to where Fred was hovering on his broom. "Ready for some steering?" Mia nodded hesitantly. "Now, all you have to do is lean in the direction you want to go in. Lean forward and left to move left." He demonstrated on his broom. "And do the same but go right to move right." He then began flying to the right side of the pitch. "So follow me, Bryce."
Fred began to go straight and then made a left turn, and Mia began to slowly follow behind him. Then Fred made a sharp right turn but Mia was still flying behind him. After a couple minutes of this Fred gripped his broom and began flying higher but still moved forward and after taking a moment to try to understand how he did this Mia was soon was once again flying behind him and then flying beside him. "You're doing fantastic! Now try landing." Fred began descending back to the ground and Mia slowly followed. Once she was able to touch her the ground with her feet she jumped off. Fred however was still sitting on his broom clapping. "As much as I'd like to continue Bryce, I have double potions soon." Fred made a face. "And I'm sure you have some studying or something to do." He said as he got off his broom. Mia nodded in response remembering the Herbology reading she was meant to do for Monday. The two of them walked to the broom shed so Fred could put his broom back and began walking back to the castle.
"You should really get some clothing appropriate for flying, Bryce. Tomorrow's a Hogsmeade trip and we could buy some and then come back here to fly." Fred suggested.
"You sure you want to waste a Hogsmeade weekend with me?" Mia asked.
"Yeah. I love flying and teaching you hasn't been so bad." He told her. "Despite what you may think Bryce, spending time with you isn't the worst way I could waste my time."
"It's not that. It's just, I know you have a bunch of other mates and commitments and you don't have to put them off for me."
"The only thing I can't put off is class. Other than that if you want to fly, I'll be there. And I've got to go to Gryffindor Tower to collect my things so this is where we part." Fred said as they reached the front hall. He began walking up the stairs when Mia said, "You know you can call me Mia, right?"
"Yeah Bryce but everybody calls you Mia." He said as he turned around.
"Only my friends but yeah it's better than Bryce."
"Once I come up with a name for you Bryce, I'll let you know." He smiled and continued walking towards his common room.
Hey guys! I know I never updated. But this is Chapter Two. I'm hoping to crank out the next couple of chapters this weekend and if I get a few responses from you I'll definitely post them here! Thanks and Keep Reading!
