The way she shimmered in the sunlight captivated Jacob. It was so unlike her father or mother, who showed the same sort of hard luminescence given off by diamonds. No, Nessie glimmered like faintly veiled moonlight, or a dusting of snow on the mountains. A child-goddess wrapped in starlight and promise, she laughed in delight as Jacob hoisted her into his loving and protective embrace. He'd be with her forever, he knew, neither aging nor sickening until the universe got up and collapsed on itself. He told himself that it was all he wanted, eternity with his imprint, the beautiful woman-to-be in his arms. He lied to himself, ignored all the times before he imprinted that he had swore off immortality, and tried to forget about the life he could have had—flawless figure and bitter laugh—with her.
