Saya: The Beginning
Chapter Two
Take One: Missing Children
Demetri was growing worrisome, not only were they late but they were very late. They left before the second act, and now it was the very end of the fifth. The show was ending in less then ten minute, and still he saw no sign of his son and nephews.
As he peered out the back door to the darkened streets of the French town, Demetri saw no sign of them. A hand reached out and grabbed him from behind, causing him to jump in alarm.
"Easy there! I was just wondering what you were doing." Said the deep voice of Jonas, Hagi's father. He was out of his costume already, his part in the play had come to an end. Demetri peered at his brother with masked emotion, he couldn't tell him that their sons and nephew left to steal from a nobleman and haven't returned since. Jonas thought too much in his son, and telling him that Trever had influenced Hagi to go and steal…he could do it.
"The theatre is too stuffy, thought I'd get a bit of fresh air is all." Demetri replied as if it had been perfectly rehearsed.
"Have you seen the boys? Gabi has been crying for three acts straight because she can't find them." Jonas asked but was oblivious to the sweat forming at his brother's brow.
"I haven't seen em' since we got here, but boys will be boys. They're probably out doing some ghost hunting." Demetri lied. "You know how Greta can be when she tells her ghost tales to them."
"You're right. Ana was getting worried." Jonas said, and released his brother of his tension by walking back to the stage curtains to watch his wife's final part.
Demetri continued to look out, no one was coming. He knew that if three boys of gypsy decent were caught robbing a wealthy family--it would be the death of them.
Take Two: Tug o War
Hagi looked on to the faces that were staring at him, but he couldn't remember why they were staring so intently. Two of them he knew, but the other three were strangers…had he fallen asleep, fainted, or did he look ridiculous at that moment? He just lost all train of thought and awoke to these five people staring at him.
"You want Hagi?" one of the faces mouthed out, the voice seemed far away even though the source was right in front of him.
"Yes, give him to me, and I'll let you go." it was the girl who spoke this time, her sweet innocent voice betrayed a sinister intent.
The two older gentlemen moved closer to Hagi, they had a mirrored trail as they walked. Hagi could see them in slow motion as they pulled him up on his feet. His body seemed to act on its own as it started kicking and pushing the old men away, and while it worked on the oldest--the younger of the two men gripped Hagi with an iron clasp. As the dark bearded man pulled Hagi by his arm across the room, he saw the figures of his cousins pulling his legs back. It was like they were playing tug o- war with him.
"You can't have him! He has a family, you can't just get away with this without consequences!" That must have been Nicholav, He and Trever continued to pull on Hagi's legs.
"What makes you think I can't?" the girl said, her head leaning to one side in inquiry. "and besides, you said you wanted to bargain--so I'm bargaining."
"Now now Saya, you shouldn't be so mean people.' the old man said, and from what Hagi could see, he had given up on pulling him and retreated to the girl's side. His cousins continued pulling him away from the large burley man who had his arm. Their pulling caused great pain, his arm seemed like it would detach any minute and if it did it would be fed to the girl on the other side of the room.
Finally, something broke in him. Reality of the situation came back and Hagi found his voice once again.
"STOP!" he yelled, kicking both kin and stranger. His wild antics allowed all three captors to let go, and Hagi dropped to the floor with a thud. This caught the girl's attention.f
The girl walked closer to him, and while he was in pain from the previous pulling--it didn't stop him from scrambling away from her.
"So, you do speak." She said walking closer and closer, while Hagi scrambled farther and farther.
"You don't want to be my pet?" She inquired him. Hagi looked into her unnatural scarlet eyes and shook his head violently.
"Why?" it was asked as if the knowledge of before, her eating a man's hand, had never happened. And the remnants of the meal remained stained on her mouth.
"you..you..you" He couldn't even form a coherent sentence. Nor could he tell in his own words the horrifying display he witnessed just minutes ago.
"I..I..I…" she mocked, "You may speak, but it doesn't seem very intelligent. Do all you gypsies speak so?"
He shook his head again, repeating his action over and over again. He looked toward his cousins who where stiffened with fear as the girl go closer to Hagi. The two men stood by as if they were amused by the situation, the younger man sported a yellowing bruise he had caused from kicking and pushing him out of his grasp. He then turned back to the evil girl infront of him.
"Well? Can't you say anything else?" she was yelling now. "What good are you if you can't speak!"
This sparked an idea in Hagi, perhaps if she thought he was useless, she wouldn't want him.
"I..I…don't..know.." He stuttered again, this time on purpose. But the girl moved closer, this time she was staring directly into his face. Her eyes seemed to brighten to a crimson color, as she took in his scent. Hagi trembled even harder now, seeing the con in his idea. If she didn't think he was good as a pet, perhaps a meal would be better.
His cousins then launched themselves from where they were rooted, and with bravery he'd never seen--threw the girl away from Hagi. Trever picked Hagi up and carried him over his shoulder, and yelled at Nicholav the smartest thing he'd heard all night.
"RUN!"
He couldn't say how they made it passed the large bearded man, but they did. The hallways flew by in a glorious glimmer, as Trever held him over his shoulder Hagi could see no one was following them. Nicholav ran in front, and the stopped for a split second for Nicholav to push open a window and thrust himself outside. Trever did the same only pushing Hagi out before him. Once the cool night air touched his face, Hagi felt free. Though they were still on dangerous grounds, each of them felt the same sense of security. Nicholav motioned for them to continue onward, they needed get out of these walls, back the to the theatre, and forget this night ever happened.
Take Three: Sisterly Affection
"Why did you let them get away, Amshel!" Saya yelled, throwing her usual tantrums. "I want him, I want him!" She began taking her things and flinging them around, combs, clips, and brooches.
"Are you so intent on having him?" Amshel asked, standing at the doorway with Joel next to him.
"There are so many others, Saya." Joel said. "Why just that boy?"
"He smelled so fresh, I haven't had blood that fresh since last spring!" She cried.
Both men looked at each other and sighed in defeat. Once she set her mind to it, Saya always got what she wanted. And it was better for them to be the one to get it for her, then for her to seek it out herself.
"I believe they are leaving tomorrow with the rest of their lot. Gypsies never stay in one place long." Amshel explained to Joel.
"Very well, Saya- Amshel will retrieve the boy and you shall have your pet soon." Joel tried to reassure the whining girl. Saya stopped screaming, and put down her jewelry box she was about to throw. She looked back at Joel and smiled sweetly, running up to him and embraced him in a hug.
"Oh thank you! Thank you!" She exclaimed, kissing Joel on the cheek.
"Anything for you Saya." He replied and smiled his wrinkled smile. Saya hopped off in the direction of the study, leaving the two men to themselves.
"Well, why do I have to be the one to do things for her? You'd think I was her manservant." Amshel complained.
"Don't worry, I'll accompany you. Afterall, bartering with a band of Gypsies whose children broke into our house--seems we wont have much of a fuss." Joel explained.
"You are right on that. But how long do you think she'll let the boy live for?" Amshel asked, wondering if it was worth the trouble of getting him.
"Depends, she can be compassionate--look at her sister." Joel said, then walked off in the same direction Saya went.
"I wouldn't call that compassionate, she just got bored before she could finish." He replied back. Amshel then walked in the opposite direction of the Mansion, entering the kitchen he arose the cook and ordered to have three raw steaks. The cook only nodded, requests of this kind were always made and not out of the ordinary. Amshel took the packaged steaks outside and walked a good 1/3 mile down an avenue that led to a small building with only one window near the top of the wall.
He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys and proceeded to unlock the door. As he entered the dark room a rustle was made and the sound of metal scraping.
"Good evening, Diva." He called out into the darkness.
The sound of a moan was made, as if in acknowledgement.
"How are we today? I've brought you food." He then unwrapped the raw meat and set it down in the center of the room. The figure emerged from the darkness and seemed to pull themselves along the floor.
"I know, it's hard to move around." Amshel sympathized. "But don't worry, I'm working on your new limbs as we speak." The figure just feasted on the raw meat, paying no attention to the man above.
"Your sister has requested for a new pet."
The figure stilled, and looked up revealing a face identical to that of the porcelain doll of a girl Joel adored. Though this face was bloodied and dirtied. She had only one arm, three other limbs were missing, and from the way she chewed her food--her tongue was gone as well. At the mention of her sister she looked up in pure hatred at the reference.
"I know, she's a horrible, horrible being." He said soothingly "But, she had reason to do what she did, you know that don't you, Diva?"
She merely glared.
"Well, continue eating. I will be back before I retrieve the boy." Amshel said as he walked toward the door he entered, he looked back and said. "You'll be as good as new soon." and with that he left.
Take Four: What can't be Undone
"Where have you boys been?!" Demetri yelled lowly, not wanting to alert anyone in the theatre. The family had already finished and were packing up, Jonas and Ana were frantic about Hagi being gone and Gabi wouldn't stop crying.
"We couldn't get in, the windows were nailed shut." Trever lied. "Dogs got to us, but we fended them off long enough to get away.
The three boys stood side by side with their heads down. A silent vow was made to never repeat the incident they had stumbled upon.
"Your father and mother were worried sick, Hagi." Demetri lectured. "And yet you three still didn't swipe a thing." He shook his head in disappointment. And then with a jerk of his head he motioned for them to get into the carriage.
Jonas and Ana were leaving the theatre at that moment and spotted their son in the carriage. Ana ran up to it and looked up at her son in anger.
"Where were you! Your father had to take over your job of moving props where they should!" Hagi looked into the face of his mother, he never had been so grateful before. To return back alive and unharmed to look into the face of his mother. While she was yelling at her boy, he was too busy thanking the heavens he made it back and her words of anger became those of endearment.
"I'm sorry mama." was all he could say, and wrapped his arms around her in a tight hug. She returned it with confusion and was oblivious to his tears. "It's alright, it's alight." she comforted, then let go and looked him in the eyes, "don't you ever do that kind of thing again."
Trever didn't say a thing to his father about what happened. He let him think it was a failed robbery attempt and nothing more. Nothing good would come of telling Demetri that his nephew was close to becoming kidnapped into horrifying house of horrors. When everything was packed up, and the family was to return to the church, the boys still hadn't uttered a word to anyone. They were thankful, they may be leaving tomorrow morning and they can put all this behind them.
"Well, we really pulled a full house tonight." Jonas said cheerfully, driving the carriage up the slopes of the countryside. "Infact, the manager had requested we stay another day or two."
This brought the three boys in a state of catatonic shock, each of them looking at Jonas with wide eyes glazed over in fear.
Demetri seemed delighted, and leaned over to the boys and whispered, "This is good, you can try again tomorrow. This time, I'll tag along."
The ride to the church seemed unbearably long. Hagi's eyes blurred, he then was seeing black and began falling back.
"Hagi!"
