I lived in the best city during the best time under the worst circumstances. Ba Sing Se was prospering. I always saw the soldiers patrolling the streets, and I always wanted to be like them. They would walk down the streets with their weapon of choice and march on. Clang! Clang! Their metal boots hit the ground with such a distinct sound.
"Go, Kotai, go!" my teammates yelled at me.
I bent the earth in the shape of a broken piece of bowl. The ball lost no momentum as I kicked it with everything I had and into the goal. It was too much force though.
The net broke, and the ball slammed into a guard.
"What the hell?!" he screamed.
"Ah…sorry, sir…! It was an honest mistake," I replied.
"My ass!"
He picked me up by my shirt and slammed me against a wall. The twilight etched his profile. It only added to the deathly glare he pointed at me.
And then he kneed my stomach. I tried to double over, but he held me fast. He punched me, he kicked me, and he beat me until the stars began to shine overhead.
Soon he would take over…
I punched back with all my hatred for this man. Why had I ever wanted to be a soldier like this…this pitiful human?
Then I felt him try to break through.
"What's with you all of a sudden?!" he screeched.
"I came out of hiding…!" I said. "…Wait! It's night; it's my turn!"
I kicked the guard away and ran as far as I could. I leaned against a wall to rest after ten minutes of sprinting.
"Get out, Kotai," I said. I head his voice in my head, "No, Hokai. You can't just hit another soldier!"
"Nights are my forte; Days are yours. We had a deal, Kotai."
"But what you do shouldn't eventually backfire on me! Hotai, I'm sorry about our deal, but—"
"But nothing! One day…I'll come out. It'll be when everything is about to be perfect…and then I'll ruin you!"
"Hotai—"
"SHUT UP, KOTAI!"
I woke up in a sewage tunnel. Dried water stained the smooth, gray rock. My memory as Hotai was limited, but I knew he didn't do anything good. I clasped the back of my head and screamed into my bared knees.
"WHY?! Why do I have to share a body with you, Hotai. Why can't I just be me. I am Kotai, but…I'm not. I wish you would go away, Hotai…I wish I didn't have a split personality…"
