Hermione let out a long, ear piercing scream. Malfoy awoke next to her, apparently startled. "Settle down love, you'll wake up the camp."
Love? What in God's name was he talking about. His arm was still snaked around her middle. She threw it away in disgust. "Someone's had a bit of a mood swing eh?" he asked with his eyes still closed.
"Malfoy, what in Merlin's beard are you doing in my bed, in this room?" she raged.
"Now dear, no need to be rash." he yawned as he opened his eyes. They made eye contact. He froze in his tracks. "You're not Pansy Parkinson!" he bellowed.
"I should say not." Hermione responded stiffly. "She didn't even come with us now did she?"
"Ugh, my father will hear about this. I suspect he'll take it to the Ministry. Mudbloods getting drunk. Sorry, I meant to saw underage mudbloods getting drunk."
"Mind you, I came in here first. The room was empty last night. Did you call me underage? If you must know, I turned seventeen last week."
Malfoy paused for a moment and bit his lip. "Yes, I do suppose I remember falling asleep in my tent late last night. And I really don't care."
"Where were you gits last night anyway?" she asked trying to hide the curiosity in her voice.
"Filthy mudblood, trying to poke your nose everywhere. It's non of your concern anyway." he spat.
"Alright, just shut up for a moment. I need to put my brain together." Hermione closed her eyes. "Malfoy, get the hell out of here!"
"Absolutely not. I have nothing but my boxers on-"
"I don't give a crap, get out!"
Malfoy was thrown out into the hallway. Hermione dressed quickly but stayed in the room a bit longer. A soft knock came on her door.
"Hermione, darling, could I come in?"
Barely recognizing the gentle voice, se opened the door. "Oh come on. Not you again!" she sighed as Malfoy stepped in. "Go on then, what is it you want? And stop calling me darling."
"What's going on with you? Huh? You act like you want to break up."
"Break up?!" she screeched. "We aren't even together you arse!"
Malfoy took a step back and he looked hurt. "Well then," he huffed. "If you want to come crawling back, you know where to find me." He swiftly walked out of the room, slamming the door shut behind him. Hermione spent the next five minutes banging her head on the wall. She must have been too loud because a minute later, Ginny poked her head in. Hermione tried to shoo her away. But as stubborn as Ginny was, she left.
"I have to talk to someone about this." Hermione said out loud. She walked out slowly and climbed down the stairs. The cabin was deserted except for her and whoever was in the shower. She sighed as she stepped outside. There were loud voices where the bonfire was. The recent events wouldn't stop her from having fun. Trying to forget what had just happened, she ran to the bonfire. Fred and George were dueling in the clearing. George had a bloody nose and Fred somehow ended up stuck in a tree.
"Ah, come on ginger. If you want to battle each other, you must do it correctly." Came a cold, sneering voice.
Hermione gulped. Malfoy she thought. But he didn't do so much as to glance at her. He waved his wand and with a crack, Fred came crashing down from the tree. Fred groaned in pain.
"You little ferret, you broke his arm!" George snarled angrily.
Hermione rushed to Fred. "Brackium Emendo." His arm healed.
"Thanks Hermione. What would we do without you?"
"I told you we wouldn't survive a day without her." called Ron.
Hermione smiled. She helped Fred stand up. Meanwhile, George was throwing spells at Malfoy.
"C'mon, fight like a man!" A spell hit Malfoy in the cheek. Blood gushed out.
"Help me! I'm going to bleed out!" he cried.
"Oh calm down, it's just a little cut. Get one of your friends to heal it."
"Are you joking? Crabbe and Goyle had to redo a grade. They can't even do a simple spell!"
"That's your problem then isn't it?" Seamus shot back.
...
As they ate breakfast, Malfoy's cut was still bleeding. It bothered no one but him anyway. Hermione and Harry alone at a picnic table munching their toast.
"So," Harry cleared his throat. "What's going on between you and Malfoy?"
"Excuse me?" Hermione nearly choked on her toast.
"Don't deny it, I heard you two yelling at each other. In your room."
She sighed. "All right, but don't tell anyone okay? I woke up this morning and found him in my bed, hugging me. I started yelling at him and he thought I was Pansy Parkinson. So, I kicked him out but he came knocking on my door again. He said 'You act like you want to break up.'"
"But you aren't together right?"
"Right. And it's like he's been switching back and forth, like he thinks I'm his girlfriend, then he acts like Malfoy from school. You woke up with Ginny right? Not some girl from Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff?"
"Yeah, it's been pretty odd. I found Hannah Abbot in my bed this morning."
"Are you serious? Have you told Ginny?"
"No 'Mione. I was joking. Of course Ginny was who I woke up with. You're serious 'bout this then? You weren't joking?"
"Of course not, why would I be joking about this?"
Harry shook his head. "You have to tell Ron. I think he would understand."
"Ronald? This is Ronald Weasley we're talking about right? He's not going to understand. In fourth year, you two idiots wouldn't talk to each other because of him."
"All right, forget it. What do you have planned for us today?"
"Erm... well, I thought, since the forest is so big, we could maybe play this game called Manhunt. At night."
"Manhunt? Do we like hunt each other?"
"Well, in the muggle version no. But I thought we could spice things up a bit. So, we split into groups and try and get each other out of the game. You know, with magic."
"Blimey Hermione, that sounds like fun."
"Yeah, I figured we could do it tonight."
"Cool, do we choose our groups?"
"Well, I suppose. Here, I'll put up a board tracking all of the pairs."
Hermione waved her wand and a board appeared, with all their faces on it. Everyone was scattered around, no one was paired yet. Then, a single line connected Crabbe and Goyle. Then Ernie and Justin, Susan and Hannah. A handful were still left unpaired but Hermione didn't worry. Ron still didn't have a partner, neither did Ginny, or Harry.
"Well, I'll be going. Gin wants to roam around the campsite. We'll be back before sunset. I promise!" Harry said with a sigh.
Hermione found Ron messing around with some Skiving Snackboxes. He was retching and he couldn't seem to force the purple end down. Goodness, I should stop him before he starts puking out his insides thought Hermione. But she left him with Fred and George. Hermione wandered around in the woods. The trees smelled fresh, the lake was rippling in the breeze. She heard a shriek of anger. A girl voice, Ginny's voice.
"Fred!" She bellowed. "Oh, you wait till mum hears about this. You'll be stuck scrubbing dishes for a year I tell you!"
Hermione heard the twins chuckle, then their voices faded. The sun was starting to set. She hurried back to the camp and studied the board carefully. The only people not paired was Ginny, Harry, Malfoy, Zabini and herself.
"All right," she said to herself. "I can go with Ginny or Ron, and Zabini and Malfoy can go together."
"Not so fast eager beaver." came two voices from behind her.
She groaned. "Fred, George, what do you want?"
"Well, we have just developed a Fate Hat." they said in unision.
"Meaning?"
"We'll put the remaining names in the hat-" began George.
"-then, everyone picks a name and whoever that person is, well, it's fate!" finished Fred.
"Will this get you two gits off my back?" she asked in frustration.
"You betcha!"
"Alright then, we'll meet you lot at the board in five minutes."
Hermione nodded and walked away. Harry and Ginny appeared looking dazed. They were holding each others hand as they walked over to her. "You guys won't believe this." Hermione launched into the story of what Fred and George had gotten them in to.
Ginny snapped out of her daze. "Those gits."
"Well, we have to meet them there now. Best of British to you."
"And you." Harry mumbled miserably.
They trooped back to the board. It seemed the whole camp was there. Ron was standing by Lavender looking considerably happy. Hermione shot him a deadly look.
"Dearly beloved," bellowed Fred. "we are gathered here tonight at this moment, to decide the fate of..."
"Harry Potter, Ginny Weasley, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy and Blaise Zabini." finished George.
"We'll go in the order that they were named." Fred said slowly.
Harry reached his arm in the "Fate Hat". Ronald Weasley.
"All right mate!" they high fived each other.
Ginny reached into the hat. Blaise Zabini.
"You're joking!" she cried.
"I'm not that bad." Zabini said looking hurt.
"And that leaves-" said George.
"The spectacularly talented and smart Hemione Granger and Malfoy."
Hermione swore and stood by Malfoy. This was going to be a long night.
