(In hospital)
"Bella?" someone said, worried.
The voice sounded so distant, yet I knew it was only coming from a few inches away from me.
"She's awake," another voice said.
This time, I could hear more clearly. I tried to open my eyes to see what is going on around me. I saw two figures hovering over me: one was in a cop uniform with features that looked so familiar, and the other was…so handsome. The concerned look on their faces signalled that something is terribly wrong, but what is it? What is going on and who are these people?
"Bella, how are you? You okay?" said the man in the cop uniform.
My face twisted in confusion.Bella? Is that my name?I tried to remember but my mind was not cooperating right now. How do I not remember anything?
"She's not feeling well, Charlie. She's been in an accident and she's recovering," said the man beside him.
What is he talking about? Nothing feels broken, everything is still intact. To make sure, I try to get up. My head ached a bit and I felt as if I had a horrible bruise on my ribs and legs, but nothing was broken.
"I know," the man in the cop uniform -Charlie- sighed. "But Bells, I just want to make sure you're okay."
"Say something to us, otherwise I'm going to actually be worried," said the other man.
I looked up at him: he looked around my age, and his features looked so familiar but I couldn't place a memory on it.
"One of you please tell me, what is going on?" I said. "Who are you guys and where am I?"
The look of concern in their eyes grew when I said this.
"What do you mean?" asked Charlie. "You don't remember us?"
I shook my head. The urge to know felt like it was eating me inside.
"Tell me, what is going on," I said.
I took a look at my surroundings. I was in a room on a bed, and a glass window that separated me from the hallways. Across the glass you can see doctors and nurses going from ward to ward. So I'm in a hospital because apparently I've been in some sort of accident. I tried to think back to how I got here, but I came to no sort of resemblance. Then, the door opened and a doctor walked in.
"What is happening?" I demanded. "Why can't I remember anything?"
"Nothing at all, Miss Swan?" the doctor asked. "Not even what type of accident you got yourself into?"
"She doesn't even know who we are," Charlie said. "How is this possible that the crash made her lose her memories of even her family?"
"Mr. Swan, please calm down. We will run a series of tests with her to make sure. But though it is rare, it has happened to some patients before. I'm sorry that it has happened, but there is nothing- no cure for this. The best you can do for her is to spend time with her to piece together her old life. Start slow, try half an hour a day," the doctor said.
I didn't know what to say. My whole body felt like it was in complete shock. Charlie nodded, but he as well didn't say anything but instead looked looked at me sadly and hopelessly.
"Thank you, doctor," said the other man. "I'm sorry this has happened."
"We will have to do regular check ups to make sure everything else is fine. I'm sorry, again," said the doctor.
I still didn't know who that man was, but sleepiness suddenly took over and I drifted back into unconsciousness.
...
(Few months later)
The doctor said that I was starting to develop my memory. According to others, I got into a serious car crash that luckily was not physically fatal. No one understood how I got into a car crash because I am usually a good driver and someone who is very attentive to surroundings. I have a very vague representation of my past life, but I know who I am now. I know how to eat and sleep, there is no difficultly in that; the area of difficulty lies in recognizing people though. I know Charlie is my dad and Jacob is my best friend since childhood. They have been very patient with me, and together they helped me piece together my past life and the people in it.
Today, Charlie said he would be home late to finish paperwork at the police station so Jacob (the handsome one) accompanied me at home. He and I were at the dinner table eating our home cooked pasta. He is a really sweet and funny guy who surprisingly does not have a girlfriend.
"I will play matchmaker and find you a girlfriend one day," I joked.
"How much will you charge me? I like brunettes, remember that!" he laughed.
"Hey, don't get picky! I will set you up with whomever, and you will love her," I said.
Jacob laughed. "All right, all right, whatever you say."
"Okay don't talk, finish your pasta!" I said.
"This is very good, who's the chef again? Oh right, me," Jacob said.
I flicked a piece at him which hit him harmlessly in the face before dropping into his bowl. He ate it anyway as if it were no big deal.
"All right, we both know you can cook, but suck at keeping in your man tears," I said, referring to yesterday when he bawled his eyes out while we were watching a movie.
He flushed with embarrassment. "Nah, it was just allergies."
"All right, all right, whatever you say," I said, copying him.
Jacob laughed. "Well, I'd love to stay and watch that movie again, but I should go home now. I'm exhausted," he said, getting up.
I saw him to the door. "Thanks Jake for keeping me company," I said.
"No problem, I'm going to come back tomorrow to check up on you, okay?" he said, squeezing me into a bear hug.
After he left, I went upstairs to my room. I flicked on the switch to bring some light into the room, and then my heart skipped a beat. There was a person on my rocking chair. What in the world? He was pale with features that were strikingly beautiful and scary at the same time. I didn't realize I was screaming with fear until he got up and started to walk towards me.
