Chapter 2
Beca tiptoed out of her guest bedroom. Taking one last look at Chloe, who has finally settled down and sleeping, she closed the door as quietly as possible.
Her ex whom she has never stopped loving is now pregnant with another man's baby and is sleeping in her guest bedroom.
As Beca walked slowly back into her bedroom, that was the thought that went through her mind. She realised having all those words together in one sentence made absolutely no sense.
And yet that was the truth.
Beca sat on her bed, well aware she wouldn't be getting any sleep tonight. She let out a soft sigh, and slowly turned to her bedside table and opened the drawer. She took out a small cardboard box that was tucked almost to the back of the drawer; as if it was meant to never be found.
Beca didn't even have to open the box and look at the contents; every memory, every emotion that was linked to Chloe came rushing back. As she took out the polaroids in the box that captured so many of the happy times they spent together as a couple, Beca couldn't help but remember that one particular day she wished she could forget -
"I'm sorry Beca. I couldn't do this anymore."
It happened almost 4 years ago.
They had been together for 3 years. Both of them tried fighting feelings they had for each other during those 4 years in college; but in the end, Beca and Chloe knew it was impossible to deny themselves any longer. They got together after the Worlds and moved to New York - Beca started her job as a junior music producer, and Chloe got into law school. Everything seemed perfect. They were the couple everybody adored and wanted to be. Beca never knew one could feel so much joy in life; she had her music, she was in the greatest city in the world, and she had Chloe.
And then one night, out of the blue, Chloe sat Beca down.
She told Beca she wanted a family - a husband, children of her own, that house in the suburb with the white picket fence. She told Beca she loved her but she had also been struggling with that dream of hers she has had since she was a kid. She told Beca it got to a point where the struggle had been killing her inside and she couldn't live with it any longer.
Chloe told Beca she couldn't be with her anymore.
That night that happened almost 4 years ago, was a night Beca wished could be erased from her memory forever.
And now, the woman whose smile could still launch a thousand of Beca's ships, the woman who could still tug every single one of Beca's heartstrings with her sea-blue eyes, was sleeping in Beca's guest bedroom, heartbroken, because the supposedly man of her dreams had dumped her after revealing to him she was pregnant.
Beca didn't know what to feel anymore.
