"You need to understand, sweetheart," Mom used to say when Dad failed to show again. "Your father has important work to do. He loves us very much, but other people need him even more than we do."

Ephram would nod, giving her a brave smile. Big boys weren't babies, and only babies cried when Dad missed their parties or games or recitals. Mom was always there, anyway.

And because Dad was never home, Mom asked Ephram for help with Delia. Mom needed him to be a big boy.

So Ephram would let Mom kiss his forehead and explain why Dad wasn't going to be there. Dad was important, and he helped people—so Ephram contented himself with Mom and Delia.
