Title: Board Games and Heroes
Prompt: May I request a oneshot/drabble of the team (after the movie) just having a day off? Maybe a type of family night with board games and snacks?
Requested by: frostystuffs
Set: after movie (obviously)
Characters/themes: the nerd team - humour/friendship
Hiro stared in disbelief. He was so close... so damn close. But then GoGo had just been faster. As usual.
The teen narrowed his eyes at the engineer, who smirked back, an eyebrow raised.
"What's up, knucklehead?"
Hiro scowled more at that. It hadn't taken long for GoGo to pick up on the affectionate but dumb nickname that Aunt Cass still used occasionally, that had originated from Tadashi's teasing of his little brother. In honesty, Hiro couldn't decide whether he liked it continue being used, but that seemed to be out of his hands now.
"You can't do that. It's not in the circle!"
"I think you'll find I can, because I have this magic card."
"That doesn't mean you can jump like that!"
"Doesn't mean I can't."
"There's no way you had both cards-"
"Well, maybe I did. Get over it. You underestimated my skill."
"You didn't mention any skills!"
"Duh, it was a secret."
"Then how can I not underestimate something I don't know about?!"
"Oh, quit whining."
"You're the one who-"
"Guys!"
The arguing pair glanced over at Wasabi, who had his hands out in front of him in a calming manner. "You're going to tip the board."
GoGo and Hiro backed off and sat down, the former smirking at the teen when Wasabi had looked away. Hiro gave her an evil look back and they silently engaged in a blinking contest.
Before anyone could win, however, Fred waved a hand in front of their staring.
"Hellooooo dudes, it's your go, Hiro," he announced, grinning at them.
Hiro sighed and broke off staring at GoGo, to study the board on the low table, thinking hard. The team were grouped around it at different angles, watching. The teen picked up his game piece - purple, like his suit, as Wasabi had insisted - and rolled the dice in the other hand.
It came up as a six, and Hiro smiled triumphantly as he moved the purple piece a step ahead of GoGo's yellow one, giving her a smug look as he did so.
"Ha. Past the circle," he reported with a smirk, and picked up a card as the game point requested, nestling it face-down with his two others just in front of him on the floor, so no one could try to cheat.
"My turn!" Fred said enthusiastically, practically bouncing on his knees as he shook the dice in his hands and threw it down at the board.
Unfortunately, it rolled with the force of a slow bullet to the opposite side of the table, and knocked Honey Lemon's drink that she had just put down off and over her lap instead. To which she jumped up and immediately shook out her skirt, showering them all in lemonade.
"Sorry, Honey!" Fred called, getting up and going to apologise as many times as he needed.
She sighed and motioned for him to sit back down as she picked up the fallen drink. "It's fine, Freddy. I was going to wash this outfit tonight anyway." She gave him a forgiving smile and headed over to the kitchen area to get another drink.
"Yeeeeah, it's my aunt that you're going to have to apologise to," Hiro added, straightening up to look over the table at the damage to the floor. Luckily it was wood floor, with them all kneeling on pillows, but the liquid was already seeping into the cracks between the tiles.
Fred gasped dramatically, looking horrified. "Oh no! The great Fredzilla is going down, guys," he told them tragically, and slowly, head hanging, walked over to the stairs that led down to the cafe, to apologise to Cass about her floor.
Hiro snickered as he descended the stairs, and high-fived GoGo. Wasabi blinked at them.
"Uh, what are you two so pleased about?" He asked cautiously.
GoGo smirked. "Cass told us before comic-boy showed up that spilling things doesn't matter..."
"But not wiping them up immediately does!" Hiro finished triumphantly.
Wasabi sighed. "So, you got him in trouble by going to apologise."
They nodded. "Yep. My Aunt's gonna be so mad," Hiro said in a satisfied way, taking a crisp from one of the bowls on the floor and popping it in his mouth, grinning.
He reached for a different bowl absently, watching GoGo take her go and move only a couple of spaces forward. They had the best love-hate that all great brothers and sisters have.
Honey came back over with a full glass of lemonade. She put it down and suddenly grabbed Hiro's wrist as he took a snack. He blinked at her, startled. Instead of replying, she gave GoGo a look.
"That could have been dangerous," she chided; as the sensible one of the group (who didn't freak out at mess) she didn't believe in potentially damaging jokes, but gladly joined in the rest.
GoGo sighed and nodded. "Yeah, okay, sorry. I wasn't really going to let him eat it."
Bemused at this exchange, Hiro glanced from girl to girl, not getting it. Honey let go of his wrist, took the snack from his hand, put it back in the bowl and put the bowl back where it was - opposite Hiro, next to Honey, so she could keep an eye.
Realising, Hiro raised his eyebrows at GoGo. "Wow, you're a sore loser," he commented with an innocent smile. She narrowed her eyes at him.
"Shut it, nerd," she huffed, popping a bubble and going back to the game.
Hiro sniggered. He wasn't afraid that she had moved the bowl of peanuts to distract him. GoGo could be distant, but she was fiercely loyal. He knew that she wouldn't have actually let him have it.
From downstairs, there was a shout of, "and you haven't cleared it up yet?!"
The team around the board game laughed out loud as Cass came running up the stairs with a cloth, trailed by Fred, who was trying to apologise again. A day off had been a great idea.
