Chapter 2: The Case of the Missing Memories
I attempted to push my legs over the bed to stand, but failed ultamitely when the metal clasps and rods prevented me from moving my leg due to the open femur break. Sonic had explained to me that I had these... inhibitor rings to help stabilize my 'Chaos Energy' (what that was, I have no idea.) and that a 'Tails' was in the process of making me new ones. I have not left the confinements of this basement like room in months. Partially due to the fact I was unconcious for several of said months and partially due to my weakened state, healing was rather slow.
My overly sensitive ear picked up the sound of a very familiar tapping of sneakers on hard metal stairs. Not a moment later, the reinforced wooden door opened and a very handsome blue hedgehog walked in, giving me an all too happy smile.
"Mornin' Shads!"
I nodded at him, watching his every delicate move,"good morning, Sonic."
His shining emerald eyes seemed to glisten in the dull light of the ceiling bulbs. He walked to the side of my bed and sat on a nearby chair, smiling brightly at me. "Wanna try and read flash cards about all the major stuff that's happened again?"
"I would like to go outside." My statement seemed to ponder over the blue boy's face, and then he suddenly lit up.
"I got an idea!"
Before I could question further, he was gone in the blink of an eye back to the room above mine. A low rumbling sounded from the.. walls? What is this hedgehog doing?
The rumbling grew louder as it seemed to grow closer, but then suddenly stopped. The wall facing me opened like a sliding door, split in the middle. On the over side was a smaller room surrounded by a glossy metal and a blue hedgehog pushing a chair with wheels.
"What is that?" I cautiously asked.
Sonic gave a chuckle before answering," well the thing I just came out of is a secret elevator we use to bring down heavier machinery. This thing-" he pushed the chair back and forth a little,"-this is called a wheelchair."
Feeling a little more relaxed, I nodded. He brought this.. 'wheelchair' close to my bed, pushing a small lever by the wheels. Sonic bent down, his peach arms reached under the back of my knees and his other arm behind my back. He lifted me up and I gave a semi-painful grunt at the somewhat rough treatment.
"Sorry," he muttered before placing me down on the cold seat of the chair. "It's freezing out so imma put this on you."
Nodding, I watched him grab a small blanket and drape it over my lower body.
"Perfect!" He grabbed the handles connected to the wheelchair I was perched on and pushed me towards the elevator. He left breifly to turn and push a button with an arrow on it and the doors closed. The now familiar him on the contraption sounded before it started to ascend upward. The doors opened once again and I was being pushed through it. We passed through a different room before Sonic pushed yet another button on the wall. How many elevators does he have?
The door roared to life and opened, showing the cloudy skies of the outdoors. The grass was covered in a light frost and morning dew. The wind was frigid, causing me to lift my blanket over my shoulders. My short, black fur still barely growing back in some places on my body due to the burns.
"Pretty isn't it?"
I turned to Sonic who was standing next to me now, his eyes gazing over the vast horizon. I could tell he was itching to do something, but I couldn't tell what.
"Indeed it is," my gaze still lingered on his form,"is something the matter?"
Shrugging, his form became a little more on edge,"well I mean-" he turned away from me,"why did you say you were 'harboring feelings for me'? I mean we're rival turned friends, at best."
Rivals? Is that what I am to him?
"Maybe that's what we were before," I reached for his arm, taking a firm but gentle hold on it," but we could become something.. new."
Sonic looked at me quizzically,"as tempting as that sounds, I feel like I'm taking advantage of you and your amnesia. Trust me-" he gave a sigh and looked away,"-I've 'harbored' some feelings for you too."
"Help me regain my memories, and we can start this anew," I gestured to myself and then pointed to him, signifying that I wanted to try.
The blue Mobian next to me gave a bright smile that seemed to fit perfectly on his peach muzzle," deal."
...
We spent hours in what Sonic called a garage, staring out into the cloudy horizon. Rainfall soon soaked the floors and harsh winds made the trees and bushes flow eloquently in its wake.
I gave a soft sigh,"I don't want to go back to the medical room."
"I know. I can give you my room, I can sleep on the couch," he shrugged, that damn grin never leaving his perfect features.
"Why can we not share?"
His head whipped around to look at me,"share the bed?"
Rolling my eyes, I chuckled slightly,"share the room."
I noticed a tinge of pink emitting from the top of his muzzle indicating a light blush. "Oh right, my bad."
I watched him stand up, stretching in the process. His muscles popping into place as he reached for the garage door panel to close the large metallic door. Once it was firmly closed, he lifted the clasps by the back wheels with the tip of his sneaker and started to push me towards a new, different door.
"How many rooms do you have?" I asked puzzled that such a small place held so many new doors and hidden rooms.
"Well, technically, this is Tails' workshop. We live together, he's basically my brother," I could hear the proud tone in his voice. "The house is connected to the workshop and there's also an airplane hanger behind the house. And under that,"he chuckled," is the Blue Typhoon. It's a huge space ship we have stored away for big emergancies."
I nodded, saying nothing as he pushed me through the door that connected the garage to the 2-story house. Before I could examine the room further, we were already heading toward the stairs.
"Hmm," I heard Sonic hum, before I knew what was happening, he had picked me up, his arm under my legs while the other held me up on my back. I grunted slightly, the pain in my thigh overwhelming.
"Sorry, Shads," he moved towards the stairs and started walking up them,"this is the only way I'm able to get you up or down the stairs for the time being."
I stayed silent as he carried me upstairs. The pain in my thigh seemingly over come by my embarrassment. We soon entered his room, the dark green covers of the bed were a mess and various gloves and socks littered the room.
He sat me on the bed, fixing the pillows behind me to make it more comfortable.
"Sorry for the mess, I was searching for something earlier and I haven't cleaned up," he shrugged, leaving the room to retrieve my wheelchair from downstairs.
I wonder if I will ever regain my memories.
Glancing around the room, I noticed various framed photos lining the wall, some faces I recognized fairly easy, most I did not.
"Those are my friends, you knew them all before you lost your memory," Sonic stated, placing the wheelchair on the floor. He opened a desk drawer, pulling out a photo. He sat next to me, showing the photo.
It was a group photo, in it was Sonic, of course. His self-proclaimed brother, Tails, stood next to him. To the side was a pink hedgehog, red echidna, a white bat, a silver colored hedgehog, and a purple cat. I noticed I was in the picture as well, standing further from the group by myself.
Sonic's smile was bright, pointing to each of his friends as he called their name," that's Amy Rose, Knuckles, Rouge, (who is also your closest friend), Silver, and Blaze."
I nodded, trying to remember names and the faces they belonged to. Before I could say anything, a gloved hand took the picture and placed it back in the drawer.
"That's one of my favorite pictures. Silver and Blaze are from different dimensions, Knux is always on Angel Island with the Master Emerald, Rouge is off working for G.U.N., and Amy is off with her cousin Rob O' the hedge." Sonic looked at me now, his eyes soft. "It's also the only picture I have with you in it."
We sat there, staring into each others eyes. His emerald eyes sparkled in the dim light of the room. He opened his mouth to speak but I quickly silenced him by pressing my lips onto his in a deep, passionate kiss.
His lips are so soft...
