"Underneath the lantern,
By the barrack gate
Darling I remember the way you used to wait
T'was there that you whispered tenderly
That you loved me, you'd always be
My Lily of the Lamplight
My own Lili Marlene."
-Lili Marlene, Vera Lynn
"Frank, do you have to go?"
Alice asked, holding onto Frank's hand as if he would disappear in any second, which given the dying sunset around them and the voices surrounding them slowly evaporating like mist, made it seem like he could have been.
"I do." Frank replied, looking sorrowfully at Alice. He brought their entwined hands up to his mouth and pressed a kiss on Alice's hand. "I love you, Alice, you do know that right?"
Alice sniffled, nodding while she brushed a piece of long brown hair out of her eyes. "I love you too, Frank. Now you better come home, you hear me? I don't think I could stand family game night without you there to make snarky comments behind your parents' backs."
Frank let out a loud booming laugh and looked down at Alice with flushed cheeks. "Of course."
