Summary: Fred died laughing. George lived crying. How would George have coped after the loss of his twin?
Chapter Two – After the War: George Weasley
By Shadow of the Blue Moon
George couldn't breathe. His whole body hurt, especially his heart, every time he thought about his twin brother, who had died in the Battle of Hogwarts yesterday. He lay on his bed, tears running down his face, clutching a photo of him and his twin together, both laughing and smiling at the camera. Everything in this room, in this house, in the world reminded George of Fred.
His family regularly came to check on him, but he turned them away too. They reminded him too much of Fred, especially Ginny, with the Weasley temper, the same sense of laughter and fun like Fred and the same face. The only ones he can stand are Harry and Hermione, because they don't remind him of Fred. And he can't stand them for too long, before he starts to remember all the times they shared with him and Fred.
Fred. Why did you have to die? George asks silently, tears running down his cheeks, holding the photo tightly. Fred. I'll always miss you. And he stays that way, for how long he doesn't know, but it seems like forever until he finally sleeps. And his dreams are of Fred again.
The next morning, he wakes up, ready to call Fred and tell him about the dream. But as he sits up and sees the other bed, empty of Fred, cold and untouched, he realises that Fred is truly gone. And he sinks back into the new place his world has become, a bleak, grey place with only tears and sadness.
When he hears about Fred's funeral, he decides to come, even though he knows it will be painful. And painful it is, as it finally sinks in – his twin is gone, and he's not coming back. Ever.
But slowly, in the weeks and months after the funeral, he starts to come back to life. His family is always there for him. At first, they're sad too, but slowly, slowly, they start celebrating again. All the little pieces of happiness, like Harry and Ginny's engagement and their wedding. Ron and Hermione's. Percy and Audrey's. Their new jobs. George starts his shop up again, although it's mostly for something to do rather than the money.
But on his birthday, April first, he can't stand it any more. It's his first birthday that he hasn't had Fred to share it with. No Fred to help him blow the candles out. No Fred to wake him up with a "Happy Birthday, my slightly uglier brother!" No Fred to share presents with.
That night, he goes to the Leaky Cauldron. His family doesn't stop him. There, he sees Angelina Johnson, the prettiest girl to him in their year, the one who had always loved Fred instead of him.
The two of them chat all night, and just as she's about to leave, he finally finds enough bravery in him to call out, "Do you want to meet again?" And that's the first time he's talked to a girl apart from his family and Hermione since his brother died.
On the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, he goes to the Leaky Cauldron again. This time there's no Angelina, so he ends up drunk and lying sprawled across the table. The last thing he can think of is Angelina this time, instead of Fred.
Soon, he starts seeing Angelina more and more often. They start off as a boyfriend/girlfriend couple, but by the end of the year, Angelina is his fianceé. Preparing for the wedding is still hard. While he's delighted to have Angelina, he still misses Fred. Who is he going to choose as his best man? It was supposed to be Fred, who was supposed to make a funny speech at his wedding with plenty of jokes and laughter.
He ends up choosing Harry as his best man, who does his best to be funny. And for a moment, just as the speech ends, he sees his twin again for a moment, clapping towards Harry. He winks at George, before he disappears.
When Angelina tells him that she's pregnant and they're going to have a son, he knows exactly what to call their son. Angelina agrees, and their son becomes Fred. And their daughter is named Roxanne, after Angelina's sister who died along with Fred.
So as he lay on his deathbed, with Angelina, Fred and Roxanne, as well as the whole extended Weasley family around him, he finally felt at peace. As he took his last, dying breath, he could see the image of his twin there in the room. "Ready to go yet, my slightly uglier brother?" Fred asked, holding his hand out to George. George nodded, taking Fred's hand, and at that moment he finally felt complete. Fred and George, together again.
Hey guys!
