When she was around Riku, her thoughts and mimicked, false emotions burned wildly within her. It was a free kind of burning, yet it imprisoned her with thoughts of what she must do for her friends, for everyone, for Sora. It was very difficult to appreciate the all the good things and heroic deeds Riku told her about Sora when she was about to sacrifice herself for this boy… Riku's very best friend…

Xion gazed at the silver-haired boy as he stared up at the starlit sky. The thought of making Riku sad was the most burning of all.

This is basically how Xion decides to go back to Sora, but this same train of thought is what drives her to a state of semi-madness that causes her to try to absorb Roxas. And heaven knows what would have happened to the plot if she'd done that.
