The Reptile Room
Prologue/Chapter 1: The New Assistant
I don't know how I got here but, somehow I just appeared here out of nowhere and I'm so glad I did. What happened before I arrived here felt like ages ago. I was so miserable and terrified, but when I appeared here Dr. Montgomery Montgomery made me feel right at home.
So far all of my worries from before have faded away. However, the one thing that I can't get off my mind from that event was the fact that I disappeared out of the blue like magic. Of course, that can't be true since there's no such thing as magic so there must be a logical explanation for what happened.
Uncle Monty is a very cool guardian, because he's a herpetologist and has a huge, fascinating collection of reptiles from all across the world. I'm usually not a big fan of reptiles, especially snakes, however, I'm getting used to them and Uncle Monty and his top assistant Gustav taught me how to take care of them.
I pressed the pause button on my black iPod Nano that Uncle Monty had given me because of my love of music despite my protests that it was too much. I bring my iPod everywhere with me. I had been listening to a song by Lady Gaga called 'Brown Eyes'. I made my way downstairs. It was Sunday morning so Uncle Monty was still in the kitchen when I arrived. He was eating grapefruit. I helped myself to a bowl of Lucky Charms and sat down beside him. Uncle Monty smiled.
"Good morning," he said cheerfully.
"Good morning," I replied.
"I'm glad you're awake. I just received a strange letter from Gustav this morning, while you were still asleep, saying he had resigned. I know it is such short notice and I'll have to find a replacement soon before we travel to Peru," explained Uncle Monty.
"Oh no, Gustav resigned? That's strange. I thought he loved working with the reptiles. He was always so happy to be here," I replied.
"That's why it was so strange," Uncle Monty said, looking gloomily at the letter in his hand. "Who knows maybe he felt it was time to retire?"
Just then the phone rang and I quickly went to answer it.
"Hello, this is Stephano, is Dr. Montgomery Montgomery there," asked a wheezy voice, that sounded a little familiar, but, I couldn't place it.
"Yes, he is, would you like me to put him on?"
"Yes, right away." replied the familiar voice.
I gave the phone to Uncle Monty and waited to see what it was about.
"Yes," Uncle Monty said into the phone. He paused to listen.
Uncle Monty asked a lot of questions then, mostly relating to herpetology. After a while he said, "Well, that's wonderful, you are most certainly hired. When will you arrive?" Uncle Monty paused again to listen.
"In about a week? Splendid! Well, we'll see you then. Good-bye, have a delightful day."
Uncle Monty hung up and said, "Jane, I just got exciting news! That man on the phone, Stephano, wants to replace Gustav's role as my assistant. He sounds very experienced so I've decided to hire him and he'll arrive in about a week or so."
"That's great, Uncle Monty," I said, happy for Uncle Monty.
"Oh yes, he said he's had a lot of experience with reptiles and has gone on many expeditions. He said the Discovery Channel once had him do a documentary on reptiles in Chile. Oh, he must have so many wonderful stories to tell! Well, enough talk for now we still have to finish preparing for Peru. The Baudelaire's will arrive tomorrow so we'll have some more helpers," said Uncle Monty giddily and I followed him into my favorite place in the house; The Reptile Room.
I know this chapter is really short but i'll publish the next chapter as soon as i can! Review Please!
