Through a few blurry and disconnected images Jamie knew it was roughly three thirty in the morning, he was in the backseat of the family car buckled safely into his seat, next to him Sophie was sprawled painfully across her car seat straps in a deep sleep a thoughtful expression was glued on her round face.
During the during the first minutes of regaining consciousness Jamie had been very perplexed and on the verge of panicking but due to his groggy state never quite crossed the threshold.
A sudden car ride didn't make sense to him and neither did the new sights he was seeing.
He had originally assumed these confusing turn of events in someway pertained to the broken light bulbs and noises in his bedroom, but as he became more aware he deduced that they had been burglarized and he and his sister were being kidnapped for ransom, for some odd and unknown reason Jamie felt much more calm about this concept than the former.
Thankfully both ideas were dismissed when he noticed his mother was behind the wheel.
"Mom, where are we going?"
His mother startled slightly at his voice. "Oh Jamie you're awoke" She in a bright if a bit weary voice "We're headed to the resort..Remember, Nancy's getting married."
Oh right,
Jamie now vaguely recalled his mother telling him and Sophie about a wedding but that was nearly three weeks ago and Jamie had a lot on his plate during that time span so it was only natural that he would forget something as trivial as a wedding.
Jamie would never understand why so many people would gather to sit and watch two people kiss while they wore ridiculous clothing, but at least weddings had cake, that along with that fact that the wedding was being held at a resort-His mother promised it had a pool-and they would be staying the whole week before the wedding were Jamie's only consolations and he sighed deeply to himself.
"Will we be there soon?" He asked, stifling a yawn.
"Now don't start that" His mother said jokingly "But to answer your question, yes, it'll be coming up soon."
Jamie nodded turning to look out the window, as the more of the sun peaked from the horizon the more familiar his surroundings started to look and he was silently grateful that the wedding wasn't being held out of state.
As he gazed out the window Jamie caught a glimpse of a herd of black horses walking closely together across an unfenced field "Mom look at the horses!"
"Where? I must have missed them." His mother said as she glanced to her left not taking her eyes off the road for more than a few seconds.
Jamie frowned in confusion keeping his finger pressed against the cold glass as more black horses entered his line of view at the distance it was hard to see much detail on the horses but they were quite obviously there. Maybe his mother needed glasses, Jamie continued watching the horses something about them unnerved him but he couldn't help but think how lucky the owner was to have so many horses, at some point an odd feeling began to brew in his stomach and goose bumps sprang up on his arms and he was instantly reminded of nights before, pressing himself closer to the window he slowly looked to his side and let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding relieved to see Sophie had woken up and was watching him with wide eyes.
"Good morning Sophie!" Jamie exclaimed as he reached over to lovingly pat his sister's arm he could have sworn he heard his mother sigh.
Sophie didn't respond and it was then Jamie realized she hadn't been watching him but rather had been staring out his window, looking paler than usual Sophie raised a small finger and pointed.
Jamie looked back at the field standing several yards ahead of the car was a single black horse looking directly at them it bobbed its head in quick motions letting out a shrill neigh that sent shivers down Jamie's back and Sophie flipped her shirt over her eyes, their mother on the other hand seemed completely unfazed humming softly to herself, seconds later the horse was gone and the field was empty.
Fear and denial filled Jamie, how long had it been since he had talked to Jack, he desperately tried to count the days, it seemed like months ago but Jamie was positive Jack had said Pitch wouldn't be a problem anymore or something to that effect Jamie couldn't fully remember but Jack hadn't mentioned the Nightmares.
Could they operate alone or did they need to be told where to go, like Tooth's fairies?
Or were they like North's elves or Bunny's Eggs or something else entirely?
Jamie had no clue and wished he had thought to ask, but he doubted Jack knew anyway according to Bunny Jack didn't know many things...
Sophie had turned away from the window and Jamie did the same sinking deep into his seat fighting the gripping fear that was trying to crawl its way up his legs, he told himself he was tired possibly dreaming and seeing things, he told himself the horses were normal horses who simply walked behind an unseen hill and maybe they were really friendly horses who liked nodding and neighing at passing cars Jamie told himself many things and continued to do so long after they checked into the resort.
