PRODUCTION/CULTURAL REFERENCES (written 10/1/17)
-I seriously can't remember when or how I came up with this episode. All I knew is that I already had the idea planned out and it was definitely going to be made into an of one day.
-For a while, this episode and "The Space Program" were the only ones I had planned for season six. I don't think I actually had anything else scheduled until after season five ended.
-I came up with the subplot this summer, after watching Modern Family for the first time. One thing about me is when I watch a show I like, I get really immersed in it and try to find out everything I can about it. I felt like if RK found a show he's completely unfamiliar with, he would try learning about it as much as he could to keep his peace of mind. Writing it was somewhat of a stretch because of how big Modern Family is, but I really wanted to do this story. I don't like making a habit of doing plots like that because it's like working backwards.
-I read "KWWE" last month and noticed that when the boys were making a video introducing the company, Buster mentioned Modern Family. I started thinking that RK would have known about it so when it came time for the rewrite, I altered the plot to make it seem like RK was a fan of Modern Family before but became horribly addicted to it and had to stop watching it. I didn't think it was entertaining enough and the story would be even more complicated, so I re-uploaded the original draft and made some adjustments to it.
-Originally, the subplot was about the guys having a movie night, but after watching Modern Family, I wrote the scene where RK doesn't know about the show on a piece of paper and the rest was history. I found out later on that Family Guy's season opener would be making fun of Modern Family and I thought about changing the plot but once I learned more about the episode, I decided to keep it. I didn't want it to look like I took the show's idea like I had a habit of doing in earlier seasons.
-I started writing the episode the day after I started "The Space Program" but only got through two scenes before I went back to it a month later. Both of those scenes were cut. The first one had Anja confronting Jaylynn at her house after blowing her off, and the second scene had the guys planning out a movie night.
-The episode title is a reference to the pop song "It's My Party," made famous by singer Lesley Gore in 1963.
-Jaylynn telling Trevor "These aren't the droids you're looking for" is a reference to Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.
-RK's Detective Swartzwelder persona is a reference to former Simpsons writer John Swartzwelder.
-Jaylynn and RK reference the Modern Family episode "Under Pressure" in the school hallway.
-When talking to KG, Jaylynn references the "You're Not You When You're Hungry" Snickers ads.
-Sparky's hatred of PBS is due to the cancellation of Martha Speaks, which was first referenced in "The Trouble with Militants" (#TYH415).
-The scenes with actual Modern Family characters were added during the rewrite. I tried mimicking the dialogue of the show as much as I could, but the conversation between Alex, Luke, and Haley was something that would belong more in the earlier seasons.
-I felt like Alex would irritate Wade more than anyone because of their shared intelligence, so I knew I had to have dialogue of him criticizing her character, while also making fun of his character.
-To better relate to Jaylynn, KG makes a reference to "The Fourteenth Year" (#TYH401).
-I almost didn't want to reference the Modern Family opening because it felt kinda obvious and there weren't really going to be any jokes when I did it, but I decided to do it because the subplot at least gave it a reason to exist and RK's last line helped set it up like in the actual series. To make sure there was at least some kind of joke, I put in the bit of Sparky failing to flip over the last picture frame after 29 takes.
-I had no other songs in my head for this specific episode but "Gorgeous," so I put it in the first draft and kept it in.
