Lamie's eyes stayed glued to the ceiling. Although she was frozen in fear, she knew looking up was the only way she could remain calm. "I wonder if Brother is dead…" the little girl thought as she closed her eyes. At this point she had realized the noise outside was not a festival…it was a bloody massacre.
She started reminiscing about her family and why Flevance had come down to this fate. It was not so long ago that her family was at a festival…a real festival enjoying a time out, a rare occasion since her parents were busy with patients all the time and her Brother, at 10 years old had been attending the medical academy and receiving tutoring from her father, the best doctor in all of Flevance.
"Mother! Let's go to the festival!" Lamie screamed happily as she squealed. Her mother was a beautiful woman who had light brown hair and green eyes as deep as the ocean just like her. She smiled,
"I'm not sure if we can go today Lamie. Your brother is receiving tutoring and doing homework. He's very busy you know"
"But mother! This festival happens only once a year! And we always go! I'm going to ask Brother if he wants to go!" Lamie ran off to Law's room.
"Lamie wait-! Oh that child" her mother could only look on and sigh with a grin on her face as she followed her daughter to her son's room.
"Brother let's go to the festival!" Lamie squealed as she ran into her brother's room. As her mother had stated, he was deeply concentrating on his homework with his father over his shoulder explaining the fine details of the art of surgery.
"This particular surgery utilizes this blood vessel" he stated as he smiled at his son.
"Oh I see!" little Law exclaimed as he wrote down notes vigorously. He was a smart child who was very bright for his age. His father could see that he would be a great surgeon one day just like him.
"Lamie! Don't bother your brother!" her mother entered the room with a worried smile on her face. Lamie squealed again with her arms in the air and eyes closed tightly
"Brother! Let's go to the festival!" Her mother could only kneel down and give in to her daughter's enthusiasm,
"Just for 30 minutes okay? We've got a patient in right now"
"What? The festival…oh yes it was today!" her father turned around smiling at his wife and daughter. Law was still writing down notes. "Well why not! It only happens once a year" he agreed with his daughter as he went to pick her up.
"Law, let's go to the festival!" she smiled at her son.
Law turned around in his chair. "I don't really like festivals….but if it's for Lamie I'll go" his stern frown changed to a faint smile.
"That's my boy! You're a great big Brother, Law!" said his father as he picked him up and put him on his shoulders. "To the festival we go!"
The annual festival of Flevance was as lively as it was any year. The balloons, merchandise, even the food was all pure, snow white. The festival in itself was dedicated to the Amber Lead that sustained the city through its profits.
Lamie ran straight to the ice cream booth and handed the young man there, money. She loved Flevance's special Snow White Vanilla ice cream, something her brother had no taste for as he didn't like sweets as much as his sister. He preferred simpler cuisine.
"Brother! Taste some of my ice cream!" Lamie screamed as she ran back to her brother who jumped back a bit. This happened every year. Lamie would ask him to taste the ice cream and he would take a step back. But like every year, Law smiled and took a lick of the ice cream cone for the sake of his sister he loved dearly. And like every year he responds, "It's alright" with a bead of sweat down his face. His mother could only laugh.
"Law if you don't like it, you don't have to taste it!" she giggled.
"Yes but it would upset Lamie mother. I wouldn't want that" he looked up to her with his solemn face and deep grey eyes inherited from his father. His father smiled.
"You really are a good big brother aren't you Law?" he put his hand on his son's head. "You're a good boy…" he kneeled down, his hand still on his son's head and handed him some money to spend for the festival. Law smiled back and ran after his little sister.
Lamie ran around from booth to booth with her brother following not too far behind. He was interested in the new medical books that had come from the other seas, while she was interested in the toys manufactured out of Amber Lead that were being sold in the corner. She reached to give the money to the attendant and noticed she had white blotches on her hand.
"Sorry" the attendant said as she hid her hand and took the money with her other one. Lamie stared at her causing the attendant to smile awkwardly.
"It's ok miss…" Lamie said as she pulled the sleeve of her shirt up and showed her a white blotch. "I have them too. My mother and father, even my brother…" the attendant's smile turned to a frown. "We all have them. All of Flevance" Lamie said "But my father is a great doctor" she started to smile.
"I'm sure he will find a cure. He says Amber Lead disease is not contagious and there is a sure way for it to be cured" she lit up a smile which caused the attendant to smile as well.
"Lamie!" Law called out to his sister. "Mother and Father said we have to return to the hospital!".
"Comiiing!" Lamie ran off to her brother. She reached for his hand as they held hands as they walked towards the hospital steadily catching up to their parents.
"Hey brother…" Lamie said in a quiet voice.
"What is it Lamie?" Law looked down to this sister and blinked. "Would you let me read some of your medical books sometime?"
"Why is that?" asked Law curiously who knew Lamie did not have much interest in medicine.
"I want to be just like you and father and mother! I want to be a doctor" Lamie looked up and smiled. "A person who saves others!
Law smiled. "Maybe when you're in the academy like me", he laughed.
"No no!" I have to get a head start! Father! Mother!" Lamie ran after her parents. Law paused and reminisced what his father told him.
"You really are a good brother aren't you Law?"
He smiled and ran after his sister with his new books, tightly under his arms
