Chapter 2

I slide the door slowly, not wanting to wake the other people's sleep. It's already past midnight, so it's obvious if almost all of the Shinsengumi people are drifting to their own dream. I tiptoed, carefully stepping my foot against the old wooden floor. The thought of the wooden floor creaked because I walked on it make me feel nervous, and unconsciously swallowing my own spit in the process. I sighed after successfully walked—or tiptoed—past the corridor where the rooms of Shinsengumi members are and turns to the main building.

Tonight is a quiet night, I can even hear the sounds of leaves getting hit by wind. The moon is at its full appearance, glaring its shine softly to earth, accompanying anyone who's still awake despite this late hour. I sighed deeply before sitting at the edge of the wooden floor, letting my legs left hanging and my head resting to the pillar as I closed my tired eyes. Another outside-sleeping night to go…

My body shivered as the cold night air washed my body, and my hand automatically pulling the blanket up until my neck, and then get ready to fall asleep again.

Wait. If I recall correctly, I got out from my room tonight just with my sleep attire—a simple yukata—and I'm sure I didn't bring a blanket with me 'cause I don't planning to fall asleep in the hallway like this. So why did I have a blanket over my body…?

My eyes shot open and I get up so suddenly that I got tripped and fell, with the blanket of course. "Ouch… That hurt…" I said, rubbing my sore back from falling.

"That's what you get from standing up so suddenly, you stupid. Tripped by your own legs and fell, just what are you, really? A clumsy five year old kid whose have mucus hanging in their nose?" he mocked me. I smell the night air filled with smokes, and I realized the man who mocked me earlier is, well, who else than our Hijibaka-san.

I shot him a glare, but it didn't have any effect on him actually, as he continued on smoking silently. "How can you let a lady fell in front of your eyes and then all you do is mocking me, and not helping me up?" I huffed harshly, eyes closed tightly while my hand gripping the edge of the wooden floor as a support when I'm trying to get up.

Stupid Hijibaka-san, I thought.

I almost successfully standing up, but soon I felt dizziness and my vision began to blur, along with my legs lost its power and once again, I fall on the ground.

Well, I thought so but my body pushed forward as someone pulling my hands. Its good thing to know it's just Hijikata-san whose hold my suddenly limp body, he's my comrade after all. He's not a stranger, so I let him. If it's someone else, I might be kicking him right now.

My mind got blank, and I realized I was about to faint. But I know he won't let me fall asleep in this way. This is proven by his violent shouting and his hand shaking my shoulders.

"Onizuka! Oi, Onizuka! Get a hold of yourself!" he said, still shaking my body. I want to give in to the darkness that beginning to swallow my body and mind, but I'm not such a mean person that I'll leave him with that ugly face worrying about me in my sight until I completely fainted, so I choose to fight the pain in my head and trying to open my heavy eyes.

As soon as he realized that I began to gain my conscious, he stopped shouting my names, but still with worry in his face. Instead with my powerless condition, I forced out a laugh for him.

"Haha, what's with that face? You should know already, worrying and panicking is just not fit with your face…" I said weakly with small smile. It really felt good to have someone who'll worry about you…

"Are you sick? Why are you stayed outside if your condition is this bad?" his tone raised a bit, I think Hijikata-san is scolding me. He paused, seemed like he waited some reply from me, but I just give him a weak nod.

"Your health will only get worse if you stay outside like this. I'll bring you to your room." He said. I'm about to open my mouth, but he cut off my words. "No complaints." He stated firmly, makes me sulking as he lifts up my body in bridal style. My face got red at the thought of other Shinsengumi members seen this embarrassing scene.

"Put me down." I said a bit loud, in hope he'll think I'm okay already and put me down. He glanced at me, and then back to the hallway. Shit, it didn't work to him.

My palm clenched, and I punched his broad chest a few times. "You're too weak. I can barely feel your punch." He said deadpanned. I frowned, and threw a punch to his chin. He stopped his tracks, "You better stay silent or I'll throw you out." He ordered sharply. I gulped, but I won't lose that easy. "It's just an anemia. I'm alright, you can put me down." I said defensively. "Not until we reach your room." He said offensively. Ugh.

"You're almost fainted barely a minute ago, and you want me to put you down already? Do you want to faint so badly?" he said. His tone is softer than before. I pouted, refusing to look to him. He sighed while he walks again to my room.

After seemingly long time, we finally arrived at my room. Hijikata-san slides the door with his feet, and then carefully put me down at my futon.

"Thanks." I said in low voice, and he replied me with a nod. "Stay there and don't walk around until I come back." He said as he leaves my room."Yeah… Wait, what?" I asked, but he already out of my sight. I sighed.

Did he just say 'until I come back'? He had carried me to my room earlier, isn't that enough? I owed him once already, and I don't want to rely on someone that much.

"Why didn't he just leave me alone?" I said, crossing my hand in front of my closed eyes.

"Why do you want me to leave so bad?" he replied in low voice, nearly choked me out of shock. So fast! Just what is he? A superhuman whose can run a miles in a second?

"I only want some time by myself. It's that wrong?" I answered. I saw him sat beside my futon, putting down a tray with two tea cups. "No, there's nothing wrong with that. Just to make sure about something," He said plainly, handing me one of the cups. I eyed his offer for a moment before reached out a hand to receive it. Half-heartedly, though. "Thanks." I thanked, eyes on my reflection in the steamy cup in my hand. And, what a disheveled face I had. My skin paled more than predictable, and I have black circles around my eyes. My hair is out of way. Did my face always look like that?

"Your tea is going to be cold." Hijikata-san said, taking a sip from his own cup. I flinched, accidentally spilled my tea. "Ah." I stated shortly after seeing the brownish stain in my blanket. "What are you doing? You shouldn't waste the tea I had offered." He said, slightly disappointed. "It's your fault for startle me and made me accidentally spilt my tea!" I stated, trying to clean the stain with a handkerchief while mumbling.

Just then, a hand stopped me. "What now?" I said irritatingly, shaking his hand off. "Don't worry about the stain. Just drink the remaining tea." He said plainly. I stared at him, silently questioning his weird behavior tonight. Is it just me or he really did act nice to me?

I drank my tea, just like his command. The still steaming tea warmed my body up. Unconsciously, I let a sigh of pleasure out.

"How is it? Feel better now?" he asked, got answered with a simple nod from me. He sighed, changing his position to a more comfortable one, taking out his cigarette.

"Aren't you going to back to your own room?" I asked. He blows some smokes before answering my question. "Well, I don't know." He answered. "What?" I replied. This guy is confusing me.

"Your condition is getting better, but who knows if you collapsed again like the last time?" he said, puffing out smokes through his parted lips. "How can I collapse if I stay in the bed?" I replied sarcastically, but he just shrugged me off. I huffed, and then pulling the cover up, ready to sleep again.

"Well, do as you like then." I ended, snuggling deeper into the warmth. I heard some ruffling sounds, and I felt his hand softly caressing my hair as he said,

"Good night."
