Chapter 2

Aria's POV:

High school kind of sucks.

Middle school was perfectly normal. I had friends, I made good grades, my foster parents were nice enough. Then I entered high school and everything changed. My foster family gave me up (just like the four families before them did). The state stuck me in Highbrooks so they wouldn't have to take care of me. My old friends made new friends and left me in the shadows, and to top it all off, I'd started hallucinating about monsters. The guidance counselor said it was all in my imagination; maybe I was sleep deprived or stress out. I believed that until my science teacher turned into a lion/scorpion monster and gave me the scar of a life time across my rib cage. I was found unconscious in my dorm room and taken the hospital. I told the doctors what happened, but they told me I was crazy. They prescribed me medicine for my 'hallucinations' and sent me back to school. My only friends for the past few days were Sophia and Riley. Well, until now that is. Now Sophia is a vampire-donkey holding a knife to my neck.

Best year ever? I think not.

Sophia pressed the knife harder into the skin of my throat and I gasped. She stank of animal farm. How had I never noticed that before? The dark haired boy was still stunned. Riley, who was also a vampire-donkey apparently, took this moment to lunge at his throat. In a flash, Nico pulled a long black sword out of thin air and decapitated Riley. An ear splitting screech rang out, then poof. She was dust. Nico focused tip of his sword on Sophia. She pulled me back a step.

"Lay a finger on me and she goes too, Son of Darkness." She hissed in my ear.

Son of Darkness? I thought

The pocket knife pierced my skin and I whimpered. I could feel a drop of blood run down my neck. Nico looked at me frantically. My mind was racing, trying to come up with any solution. I decided to take my chances, and stomp on her foot.

"Ow!" she screamed.

She moved the knife away just long enough for me to free myself.

"Oh, you'll pay for that you little slut!" she screeched.

My mind started racing again. Over the loud music, I could hear the horrified screams of the students around us. God only knows what they were thinking. Sophia lunged at me.

Do something! I thought.

I kicked her hard in the stomach. She fell on her back, which gave Nico just enough time to stab her through the heart. Another screech rang out, and she was dust too. Before I could even process what had happened, I felt a hand grab my wrist and pull me forward.

"Come on!" I heard the boy say.

My feet were running. Nico shoved students and teachers out of the way as we made our way out of the cafeteria and into the lobby. I could hear the teachers yelling at us to stop.

"Hurry!" I heard him say.

He kept pulling me and I kept running until we reached the revolving glass doors that led out of the school. We burst through the doors and ran into the parking lot. He pulled us behind a bush and stopped. I didn't realize how out of breath I was. My head was throbbing and my hands were shaking. I couldn't rationalize anything that just happened in my head.

"Hold on to me." said Nico.

I paused. "Huh?" I managed between heavy breaths.

He grabbed my arms and wrapped them around his waist. If I had been in my right mind, I would have blushed furiously, but sadly, this wasn't the weirdest thing that had happened to me today. He looked at me sternly.

"Do not let go. And hold your breath." he said.

I didn't even question him. I inhaled and shut my eyes. The ground disappeared from underneath my feet. We plunged into a cold gust of wind and nothingness. My lungs felt compressed, like something was trying to squeeze the air out of them. If I had not been holding my breath, I would have screamed. Suddenly the floor materialized. I let go of the boy, and fell to the floor, gasping for air and shivering.
