In this chapter I plan on putting in a few P.O.V'S. This story is only going to get better. Now enough jibber jabber. ON WITH THE NEW CHAPTER!
Fudgebrownieface: Thanks and I noticed that on the story.
Guest: Thank you! I love that song and that is the theme for it. I've written something beore just for class but yes technically this is my first ever.
Urfriendtheninja: Thank you and Im glad you think that about Shephard. Bree WILL be in this chapter and as far as the Brase goes. It's complicated, just read and you'll see.
Adams POV
It's midnight right now and I'm holding my little brother. Which it's usually like this every now and then. Here's the thing.
Shephard and I were thrown on the streets by our drunken dead-beat Dad. Our Mom died from sickness a few years ago and that's when it started. I got home from work one night and found Dad yelling Shephard for something stupid. I simply told Dad to chill a little, but he took that as a threat. He took Shephard and threw him against the floor. He then flung his beer bottled at me. He screamed some...colorful words at both us. I could tell he was about to do something bad to either of us so I brought Shephard close to me but instead, Dad ran over to our room and brought out a couple of grocery bags with clothes inside them. He threw them at us and told us to get out.
I tried to reason with him by telling him he was just drunk and needed to just go to bed, but instead he punched me in the stomach. He looked at Shephard but I quickly rebounded and punched his stomach. He yelled more curse words at us. He pretty much told us to burn in a certain place and we could die for all he cares. I had enough. I went to mine and Shephard's room and grabbed the rest of our clothes. I picked Shephard up and carried him outside. That's when we started living on the street.
We've been living on the streets for almost a year now. We have no family in the city so we're kind of on our own. Ever since then I've been working at the same old grocery store and I only make enough money for food. I've sworn since then to protect Shephard. He's the only real family I have left, and I'd do anything to make sure he's happy and healthy. Every now and then someone would leave a small bag of food or something for us but that was it. I tried to build a small awning out of boxes next to a garbage bin and that was our home. I also have a little box for our clothes, towels, and blankets that I find lying around.
It's August right now which means cold mornings and nights. I looked down at Shephard. His small chest rose and sank with every soft snore. He's the reason I haven't given up yet. If I give up, we'll both get seperated and thrown into who know's where. My heart sank anytime I thought of that. I can't lose the little guy, he's the most important thing to me right now. I looked up to the sky which was black with little white dots here and there. I leaned back and pushed the thought of me losing my family out of my head. My eyes closed and I fell asleep.
That morning I woke up right when the sun was barely visible next to the building we live near. I sniffed the air and a really bad odor caught my attention. It's more than likely me or Shephard. We live next to a pool and we've been sneaking in before hours to get cleaned up. There's always fresh shampoo in there. Not to mention we wash our clothes in there too.
I nudged Shephard a little to wake him up.
"mmm, 5 more minutes" He groaned. "Come on, it's shower time" I said. He stood up and grabbed the cleanest clothes there were. I grabbed mine and we snuck behind the building. There was a small rock holding the door open. I opened the door and quietly walked inside. Shephard was right behind me. We walked down the hallways until we found a door that led into a shower room. We went in and found a small shower. Shephard was first to go. He stepped inside the shower and turned it on. I saw him throw his clothes over the curtain leaving me to catch them.
"Wash behind your ears" I said. I sat down on the bench. I couldn't wait for it to be my turn. I could feel the steam coming out of the shower. The nice warm steam. Imagine how the water feels! I heard the shower turn off.
"Uh uh. You go for another 5 minutes" I said. He poked his head out of the curtain. "Why? I already washed behind my ears" He said. "Because it's flu season and I don't want you to get sick" I said. He grunted and went back in. After a few more minutes he got out.
"Done" He said. I handed him a towel and he wrapped the towel around himself. He got his clothes and put them on after he dried off.
"Ok, now stay right there. If anyone comes by, tell me" I said. He nodded and sat down. I got in the shower and took mine. After about 10 minutes I dried off and put my new clothes on. Together, Shephard and I walked out of the building, unseen, and made our way back to our alley.
"Can we go by the park?" Shephard asked. I looked at him weirdly. "No" I said. If I take him there and kids find out we're living on the streets, they'll just treat Shephard and I like trash.
"Please!?" He grabbed my arm and started begging. He made puppy dog eyes that somehow I can't say no to. No matter how much will power I have, he can flash that look and I'll give in.
"Fine we can go" I said. I made sure the both of us actually looked descent and we made our way to the park.
Once we got there, Shephard found a few butterflies and birds and started chasing them around. I however found a nice bench to sit on. The next thing I knew this girl ran up to me and took a seat right next to me and pulled a paper over her face. I looked at her from behind the paper.
"Don't ask. Just watch your kid or something" She whispered. I was about to ask why but I heard a boy yelling out someone's name.
"BREE! BREE! WHERE ARE YOU SHNOOKUMS!?" The boy asked. The girl then nudged my shoulder.
"Don't say anything" She whispered while focusing on the paper. Im guessing she's Bree. She nudged my arm again and held out her phone.
"Text him and tell him I'm at the coffee house on 9th street" She said. I chuckled a little. Seriously? She's hiding from this guy. Sure he seems over bearing but considering she's a little pushy, they're perfect for eachother.
"Fine" I said. I took her phone and scrolled through the recent messages. It's not hard telling who this guy is considering a bunch of text messages consisted of stuff like
"Where are you baby?"
"Hey just wanted to say I love you!"
"I luv u!"
Yeesh this guy's a creep. And apparently his name is Ethan. I texted his number and told him what Bree told me to tell him. I held my head up to see what he would do. He tossed his flowers out and did a cartoon-like run to the coffee house. Bree and I laughed.
"Thanks, you're a life saver" She said while smiling and laughing.
"No problem. Who was that guy?" I asked. She rolled her eyes. "His name's Ethan. We've been dating for almost a year, well, he's been dating me for almost a year. I've been dating him for a month" She said. What? That doesn't make sense. She noticed my confusion.
"I wanted to break up with him after a month of dating but he's so...him. Meaning he can't take a hint. So as far as he knows, we're still dating..and probably engaged!" She said. I couldn't help but laugh. She looked apalled by my statement.
"Oh you think it's funny Mr Comedian? what's your girlfriend like?"
"I don't have one" I said. Like some girl would want to date a homeless guy. "Oh, well why don't we find you one. Im Bree by the way. Bree Henderson" She said while holding out her hand. I shook it.
"Adam Davenport" I said while smiling. "You look familiar" she said while narrowing her eyes. I broke the hand shake. Please don't tell me she's seen me in an alley or something.
"Do you by any chance go to Mission Creek High?" She asked. I nodded. "Yeah I do. Im a sophomore" I said relieved she didn't recognize me from the alley.
"Well I'm a freshman. So about finding you a date..." She said while trailing off. "Her!" She said while pointing to a blonde, tall girl. She grabs me by the arm and pulls me to the girl.
"Hey, this is my friend Adam" Bree said. The girl turned around. "Oh hi. Im Sabrina" She said while waving at me. She elbowed me a little. I actually don't know how to talk to any girl, considering I've spent most of my time watching/raising Shephard. Crap! Where is he!?
"So Adam, why don't you tell Sabrina about yourself" Bree said. I was too busy looking around the park for Shephard.
"Adam, everything okay?" Sabrina asked. I looked back at her. "Yeah just looking for my little brother" I said. "You have a brother? How old is he?" Bree asked.
"His names Shephard and he's 8" I said still scanning the park. I closed in on one spot where he was playing near the little pond. I sighed in relief.
"Aw! I've never met a boy named Shephard before" Sabrina said. I looked back at them, relieved that Shephard didn't wander off.
"I take it you found him?" Bree asked. I nodded. "Yeah I did, he's over by the pond" I said while pointing to the pond. They both smiled and we went on talking. Which by the way is really hard. Im trying to find a way to not give out that I live next to a dumpster.
"You know there's this great smoothie place down the street. Wanna go?" Sabrina asked me. I smiled and went for it. "Sure" I only have like 5 dollars but that's enough for a small. The three of us walked to the smoothie place.
Once we got there, we took a spot on a little bar.
"I'll go order our drinks" Bree said while getting up. Sabrina and I smiled and waved her off.
"So what's your favorite smoothie?" Sabrina asked. I looked up and thought for a minute. "Banana Blatz" I said. That literally was my favorite.
"That's mine too!" She said. Bree came and found us laughing together and of course, being a teenage girl, assumed we're dating.
"Awww! I knew you two would hit it off!" She said excited. Sabrina and I looked at eachother with confusion.
"Us? No, we're just hanging out" Sabrina said. "Yeah. Just hanging" I said. Bree looked a little embarrassed but got over pretty quick. The waiter came by with out smoothies and we took them.
"Man these are good!" Bree said while slurping the drink pretty loudly if you ask me. "Yeah" I said while drinking mine. After half an hour...or more, we finished our smoothies.
"Those have got to be the thickest smoothies ever" I said while leaning back in the chair. "What time is it?" I asked. Sabrina checked her phone.
"3:04" She said. Whoah! I've been here 2 hours! 2 hours...SHEPHARD! My eyes widened.
"What's wrong?" Bree asked. "Shephard" I plainly said. "You left him at the park for 2 hours!" Bree asked shocked. "Yeah I gotta go. Here's the money for my smoothie" I said while throwing a 5 dollar bill on the table. I ran out of the building and head straight for the park. Once I get there, I began to look around.
"SHEPHARD!" I yelled while looking around. I ran around the park even more. Please tell me I didn't lose him. Please! I stopped by the pond to see if he was anywhere near it. Nothing! I found a few people.
"Excuse me, have you seen my little brother?" I asked this one couple. They looked at eachother and shook their heads. Dangit! I walked around even more.
I kept searching for the next half hour. I kept thinking about how big this park is. By the time I'm done I stand next to a tree and sit down next to it.
"Please tell me I didn't lose him!" I said out loud. Nothing was happening. I can't believe it. He's gone. He's really gone. All because I wanted to go hang out with some girl and pretend to be someone I'm not. Tears made their ways into my eyes. Suddenly I heard a little boys voice.
"ADAM!" He shouted. SHEPHARD! I stood up and run to him. He runs over and hugs me.
"Oh my god! Where've you been!?" I asked him. He looked at me. He was bawling his eyes out right now.
"I-I thought y-y-you left me f-for good!" He said. That's right. I left HIM. Man that was the dumbest thing I've ever done. I kneeled down in front of him.
"Shep. Buddy, look at me" I said while looking directly in his watery, glassy eyes. I realised my eyes were probably filled with tears.
"I would never EVER leave you. I was being stupid. I promise I'll never leave you alone again" I said while pulling him into a hug. He lays his head on my shoulder and continues crying. I pick him up like that and walk back to our little alley spot.
Once we get back to our "house", I sat him down and sat next to him. His head is leaning on my shoulder right now. I can't believe I was dumb enough to leave him like that. The day went on and we ate the left over pizza for dinner. Surpisingly this was one of our better days. Once night got here, Shephard got ready for bed and grabbed his old blanket from his bed. He curled up in it and layed next to me.
"Adam" He said. I looked down at him.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"Are we ever going to have a home?" He asked. I really wished he wouldn't ask that. I have no idea whether or not we'll find a home. I'll just tell him what I always tell him.
"Shep, as long as you and I stick together, we'll always have a home. Home is where you're safe. And I promise, as long as you're with me, you're safe" I said. He smiled and went to sleep. I took my old blanket and to sleep next to him. It's suppose to rain tonight so I doubled up the cardboard boxes and blankets. I wish we could find a place to call home, but for now. This is our home.
There's the next chapter! Thanks for all the reviews! Im glad I made this chapter longer! See you next chapter!
