Hiya guys! Okay, so I updated the first chapter of this story about a month ago - :S - and I have now decided that I am going to be updating every Saturday as I'm not very motivated without an idea of when I'm going to update. There may possibly be an update on the rare Wednesday, but the only thing I can say for definite is that there will be a weekly update.
Okay, back to the actual story. Thanks to both TrisVeyofIlleaDistrict12 and Pheonixfeather201 for the reviews for the last chapter. And thanks to the other 63 people who also read it.
Hope you enjoy this chapter and I will be updating again next week XxxxX
Chapter 2 – A Small Disturbance
Tris's POV
As we headed for the stage, the room stayed silent. You would hear a penny drop in here it was that bad.
"Most of you thinking about what your beds looked like when you left your rooms?" I asked with a smirk on my face in attempt to break the tension-filled silence. A number of smiles were offered back as I took my place at the front of the stage.
Tobias and I has a timetable sort of thing, each of us took one Dissembly each month. This is was my turn as Tobias had taken it last time. Right now he stood close behind me on the stage, next to Sasha and Thomas.
I continued, "As you all know, Four and I aren't the creators of the Dissemblies, just the hosts, although I am pretty positive that if any of you held any suggestions concerning our every other Monday morning Dissembly then you would be more than welcome to speak with Sasha or Thomas, and I have been notified that there is something that they have to tell you during this Dissembly – I'm not quite sure what that is, so let's all hope for the best. With that, welcome Sasha Trimsley and Thomas Long, our council leaders."
Applause broke out through the room, and I stood back as the council leaders took my place and I stepped back beside Tobias.
"Thank you very much for the applause," Thomas began. "We know that it doesn't mean anything, that you would much rather be back at the Ditel eating breakfast, but today's Dissembly isn't going to be an ordinary Dissembly; in fact, I think you might enjoy this one." There were a few laughs in the audience, both during the opening speech and after, but most faces stayed as oblivious and uncaring as they had to begin with – the bags under their eyes showing exactly what they were thinking.
Sasha clasped her hands together in front of her with a clapping sound and took a deep breath before saying, "Right. So as Thomas said, we know how excited you are to be here this morning." The sarcasm wasn't entirely obvious, but some of the audience laughed. "We have some special news to discuss with you – special news that not even our faction leaders know about yet." All eyes shot toward me and Tobias, and then quickly returned to Sasha as she carried on. "We are now our own faction – no unfair restrictions, no unjustified murders, and no discriminative comments."
I looked over to Tobias and raised an eyebrow. His face mirrored mine as he looked back at me. We were both thinking the same thing, 'where the hell was she going with this?'
"Things have become what we could only dream of two years ago, and we can thank the number team over here, Six and Four, for creating this chance for us. Now, after all the hard work that our two brave leaders put into this, they definitely deserve a giant applause." The audience seemed to have woken up somewhat vastly during Sasha's speech and were now beating their hands together rapidly as they waited to hear what the whole point of this story was. All I could think was that 'hard work' was one way to put it, I lost everyone I cared about and all she can come up with is hard work?
When the noise finally quieted, Sasha again continued, "As the people that were trying to harm us at the very beginning – Jeanine Matthews and the people working for her to be specific – have now been punished accordingly, Thomas and I decided that isolating ourselves from the factions that we previously called home isn't the way to go with this. Instead we believe that we should reconnect with our old neighbours, and we believe that this should happen sooner rather than later."
The noise that filled the room now was ten times louder than the excited applause previous to the ending of the speech. People were clapping, people were stunned, people looked excited, people looked horrified, people looked angry, the mixed emotions filling the room were blinding. I stared first at Sasha and Thomas – whom were standing in the same place looking down at the audience with expectancy – and then turned to Tobias. He gave me another raised eyebrow.
"Divergent citizens," I repeated over and over until the noise began to lessen. "Please return to your seats and we will proceed today without our council leaders." I turned to the Thomas and quietly said, "You can go." I didn't look at Sasha as I didn't think I would be able to obey the rule that I had once created previous to the completion of our faction.
I hadn't expected a reply, but Sasha the said, "It's okay, we want to stay."
I sighed deeply and composed myself before turning to look at her with a calm expression on my face. "I wasn't asking," I spoke with a voice as rough as the bark of a tree and shoved a stern look toward her and Thomas. I turned back to the audience and listened to the patter of footsteps as Sasha and Thomas made their way down the stairs of the stage. "Now we shall continue. I am sure that the previous speech came as a shock to many of you sitting here today; it certainly came as a shock to me and Four. We understand that some of you wish to be reunited with the other five factions, and we understand that the other proportion of you would prefer never to see the light of day, but as we promised the day of the first Dissembly – our first visit to Divergent – we will one day reconnect with old ties and become a member of the large society that we live in. As you all know, there are people that live within those five factions still tainted with the ideas that Janine brainwashed them to believe. Many of those beliefs have since evaporated, but many still remain, and currently we are still getting used to the Divergent environment." I turned to Tobias and received a nod that told me what I needed to know. "We are going to end this Dissembly rather early today and allow you an extra half an hour or so in your beds. But please make your way out in an orderly fashion to prevent the number of casualties that occur on daily basis." I glanced at Margaret Grant who sat in the third row with stitches on her forehead and a cast clinging to her right arm. "How's your arm, Margaret?" She nodded politely yet stayed quiet – I felt bad for singling her out of the audience but she was a great way to get my point across to the faction.
I nodded my head with my hands clasped at my front and watched as each row one by one made their way through the door and down the hall until I could no longer see them. That's why people wanted to be here early even when they didn't, if you were late, you had to sit at the back. And when you sat at the back, you were last out.
Unfortunately for us, we were always last out, but today I was sort of dreading leaving the Dissembly Hall as I knew that Sasha Trimsley waited close by...
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten...
It's official, counting to ten doesn't help whatsoever.
