Take Me to Oblivion

The Elder Scrolls is more than a game. In the year 2069, it's used as a hyper-realistic simulated world for consciousnesses transferred into its servers. This is the story of Matthew: American nobody, government test subject, Breton warrior-bard.

2. Chapter 2: Complications

"Your sim avatar is a base expression of you – a realization of your soul, if you will. The person you will be in the simulation is the same person you would ideally be in life. Shall we go over it one more time?"

"Please."

"Your avatar is a Breton bard. You'll be a skilled alchemist and a capable archer, agile and swift-footed, trained in stealth and illusion magic. Good with people, too."

"Breton?"

"Like a Frenchman."

"...magic?"

"Yes. Illusion magic."

"Wanna explain that?"

"Don't worry; you'll pick it up fast. Now close your eyes and try not to think."
