The sunlight streamed through the small window and on to the woman sitting in the middle of the room with a book on her lap. Her hair shone brightly as if it was made of flames that danced in the sunlight. Behind her, the towering man watched her silently.
"What is it, Adonis?" Rei asked, never taking her eyes off her book.
"When are you going to let him go?"
"Are you jealous that there is another devil here? Aww Adonis," Rei quipped.
"Do not mock me Rei. It's highly unbecoming of you," Adonis replied.
"Hm...not funny I suppose...you heard me yesterday. When he regains his memories he's free," Rei replied.
"How long will that take?" Adonis sighed.
"Depends on how much he has lost...but what's gotten into you? You seem restless," Rei said as she finally turned around to look at the taller blond haired devil. His focus was already on her when she turned to look at him, his expression gave no inkling as to what he thought about the situation. He knew that if he voiced his opinion she would do as she pleased and he would be there to help her with the consequences.
It always left a bad taste in his mouth.
Adonis scoffed as he watched her cross her arms and frown.
"You're not fooling me with that stoic look of yours. Come on spit it out," Rei demanded.
Adonis held his silence as he continued to look down at the woman, he shifted his weight on to his other leg.
"I am ordering you," she continued firmly.
Adonis growled at her words, he had no choice but to comply with her orders. He too was bound to Rei's will, from a time they first met in Hell. Even if he tried not to the witch's contract he was bound to would push him to do enact whatever she had asked him to do.
"Well?" Rei waited for his answer.
"The fact that he is here...the fact that you 'stole' him from the Inferno can only mean that someone deliberately put him there. Which means that someone will come looking for him," Adonis began, he could see her emerald green eyes had already begun to process what he had said.
"We'll be fine," Rei replied as she stood. Adonis balked at the woman's simple answer but stayed silent as he watched her rise from the floor and stretch. In the back of his mind he knew that she had no idea of what she may have started for the both of them but yet her demeanor did not change, still calm, collected and aloof. He didn't know of her goals for deliberately looking for the man and pulling him from the Inferno, she didn't tell him much about her goals he was just there, by her side.
The soft pat on his shoulder brought the man back from his thoughts. She had walked over to him and gently patted him on the shoulder as if to reassure him.
"I'm not the cold-hearted bitch you called me in the Inferno nor am I, child. I know what I'm doing and intend to go through with it," Rei said before she continued down the hall.
"How long are you planning on keeping this façade Rei?" Adonis called after her.
"Stop being a jerk!"
Adonis smirked as she yelled back at him. He knew very little of her but little moments like this amused him. Her sudden interest in the Sons of Sparda made him more curious about her and her intentions. What did she want from the Sons of Sparda? He had no choice but to wait.
"The amulets are for the both of you. I even had them engraved," a blond-haired woman spoke to a young Vergil as he and a mirror image of him stood next to him.
"Do you know who gave you these amulets?" the woman asked.
"No," the two boys answered together.
"Well...they are gifts from your father. They are actually two halves of a bigger amulet. Each of you have one half so that even when you are apart you are always together..."
"Mother?" Vergil whispered to himself as he slowly opened his eyes from sleep.
The scent of fresh fruit tickled his nose, and the clanking of glass on surface vibrated in his ears. His senses were on high alert as he sat up and began to let his surroundings sink in.
"That's right...that woman...Rei..," Vergil thought as a hand went to the wound on his chest. The wound was seemed to still be fresh and not completely healed as his other wounds. With the lack of healing of his wounds and the loss of his memories did not sit well with him.
"Still not healing?"
Vergil glanced at the woman approaching him, she placed a plate of toast next to the plate of sliced fruit and cup of water. He remained silent as he watched her sit down across from him.
"Let me know if need something softer or more to eat...I'm not sure of what your diet consists of but this is a good start?" Rei commented.
Vergil glanced at the food placed in front of him and then to Rei. She sipped on some type of tea that smelled of roses, she periodically glanced at Vergil. Vergil followed her eyes to what had her focus, the scar on his chest near his heart.
"What?" Vergil asked. His voice gravelly and deep, he reached for the water. Rei watched him down the water before speaking.
"It's still not healed,"
"I understand that. There's a dull throb there...," Vergil replied as he reached for a piece of toast.
"Do you remember anything? Like who did this to you?" Rei began. Vergil remained silent as he thought to himself. His mind was blank. He knew of himself to some extent but nothing more.
"No," Vergil replied before he quickly devoured his toast and soon reached for the other piece.
"Don't worry...we'll figure that out," Rei said as she sipped on her tea.
"You're so adamant about helping...," Vergil started.
"I know how it feels to look for someone and not be able to find them," Rei replied. Vergil glanced at Rei before he reached for a piece of fruit.
"Also...I'm not sure if you remember the amulet your mother gave you...but it's missing," Rei commented.
Instinctively Vergil's hand went to his chest to grab the amulet and found it missing. Rei narrowed her eyes at the man and at his initial reaction.
Shock.
"Well find that too...I'm sure it has tons of memories for you," Rei trailed off and took note of the man's silence. Rei remained deep in thought occasionally glancing at Vergil's wound on his chest, but silent for the most part. Vergil ate in silence and occasionally took a look at the woman across from him.
"Well! How do you feel now? Better?" Rei asked as she stood.
"To a certain extent...," Vergil trailed off.
"That's good...now hopefully we can get you back to your former self," Rei replied.
"I assume I should be expecting a story time correct?" Vergil quipped.
"Hah! Look at you. But yes...you'll get a storytime and I'll tuck you in as well," Rei replied joking.
"I'll pass," Vergil replied and ate the last piece of toast.
"What is the last thing you remember?" Rei asked.
"A battle...a man with a scar...falling into the darkness," Vergil replied.
"You remember Arkham...I assume fighting Dante...and then falling into Hell," Rei commented. "What about Sparda himself? Your mother?"
"I don't...remember my father...my mother...only fragments...," Vergil trailed off.
"I see...I can possibly help with that," Rei said as she began to walk out of the room. Vergil focused on the woman leave the room for a moment then turned his attention back to the fresh fruit in front of him.
"Vergil...we'll begin your search for your memories tomorrow. There's someone I want you to meet," Rei said as she leaned back into the room.
"Let's get you cleaned up. Adonis will help you with that while I'm out,"
Vergil listened to Rei before she ducked out of the room again, he could indeed feel a small amount of his strength returning to him but nowhere near enough. Only one night had passed and his wounds had barely healed. The remnants of blood and the stench of the brimstone from the Inferno clung to his skin. A hot shower would be nice to refresh.
"Adonis! I'm leaving...be back in an hour,"
Vergil heard Rei's voice echo in the apartment followed by footsteps as he reached for the last piece of fruit.
"Make sure the barriers are up and make sure you help Vergil if he needs it!" Rei said as she approached the front door with Adonis behind her.
Adonis scoffed and closed the door after her, as he began to walk past the front room he noticed the Vergil was standing. The demon and devil locked eyes with one another. It was Adonis who broke the silence first.
"The last door on the left...I never thought I would see a Sparda looking so pathetic," Adonis sneered before he walked away. Vergil frowned as he headed towards the bathroom.
"Well hello there Miss Rei," a blond-haired woman called out to Rei as she approached her.
"Trish! Thanks for coming," Rei said as she sighed and sat down.
"What's wrong dear? You seemed troubled over the phone," Trish commented as she quickly looked over the younger woman in front of her.
"I'll cut out the fluff, it's a pretty sensitive subject,"
"You've never been the type of person to beat around the bush or just have simple issues," Trish chuckled.
"I found Vergil," Rei started.
Trish's eyes widened but quickly narrowed at the young woman. She knew that Rei wasn't a person to joke around when it came to business, and the young woman clearly stated that this was business related on their phone call. Vergil was no joke to her, especially to Dante.
"What do you mean you found Vergil? He's lost in Hell somewhere," Trish replied.
"That may be true, but when was the last time you went to hell and looked for him?" Rei questioned.
Rei's sharp question made Trish shift in her seat, indeed it had been a long time since she herself traveled to Hell or even attempted to look for the other Sparda twin. She placed a strand of her blond hair behind her ear and glanced at the young woman that looked back at her, waiting for an answer. Ever since Dante rescued her she never even thought about going back to Hell in fear that she would be hunted down by Mundus.
"What were you doing in Hell anyway?" Trish retorted, she tried to remain her cool and collected self.
"Personal reasons," Rei replied nonchalantly.
"Vergil is a personal matter to you?" Trish asked and arched an eyebrow at the woman.
"I do have to say he is a handsome man. But he was not my main goal as to why I was in Hell, I found traces of him and investigated. That's all," Rei replied.
"Oh...ok," Trish replied.
"But I do need your help though...but I do need you to believe me," Rei said firmly.
"Ok?" Trish waited for her to continue.
"He has amnesia in some aspects...for example, he doesn't remember Dante-" Rei started. Trish snorted and laughed at Rei as she tried to explain Vergil's condition. Rei rolled her eyes and glared at the individuals that looked at the two.
"How could he not remember Dante? They were brotherly rivals," Trish chuckled.
"That's my point. He doesn't remember him, or his father. He can barely remember his mother. I even surprised that he's not freaking out at the fact that he can heal as fast as he can," Rei started.
"And to add even more to this weird situation, he doesn't even have his amulet. So THIS is a high-level emergency," Rei added.
Once again Trish found herself shifting on her stool as she began to search for Rei for any hints of deception. She found none.
"Where is he now?" Trish asked.
"My apartment,"
"You actually got him to sit still with Adonis there? I'm amazed," Trish joked.
"Well...there is a reason behind that..." Rei trailed off.
"Which is?" Trish asked, her face void of emotion.
"He's... in a temporary contract with me..." Rei replied
"He's what?" Trish leaned forward toward Rei and waited for her to speak again.
"He's in a temporary contract with me," Rei repeated herself.
"...You...put Vergil, The Son of Sparda, into a contract with you..." Trish repeated quietly.
"Understand this before you lash out at me, I am faster than you, and I don't want to keep him. It was the easiest way to get him from the Inferno by myself," Rei stated firmly as she looked into Trish's icy blue eyes.
Sighing Trish shrugged her shoulders and relented on intimidating Rei. She didn't know as much as she would have liked to but she definitely watched her every move. But to put Vergil on a blood contract was a little excessive, Dante would have her head if he knew that.
"Alright...Take me to where he is...but if he's in any distress...," Trish trailed off. Rei waved her hand dismissing her attempted threat.
"Let's go,"
Satisfied with his shower and grooming, Vergil looked in the half clouded mirror, his face was smooth and void of any scar or blemish. Pulling his long silver hair back into a ponytail he focused his attention on the bulbous pink puckered scar on the middle of his chest. It hadn't healed like the other scar had, he was more worried about the scar not healing than the ones that had healed within hours of him meeting Rei.
He growled in frustration and wiped the mirror again, Vergil saw a split image of himself. Just as quickly as he saw the image it was gone.
"W-What?" Vergil thought to himself.
"Adonis, I'm back!"
Vergil heard Rei's voice echo through the apartment, glancing once more at the mirror he grabbed the black button up that hung on the bathroom door. He smoothed the black shirt and pants as he made his way towards Rei's voice.
"Adonis, where's Vergil? I thought I told you-" Rei started.
"I am not his babysitter," Adonis had cut Rei off.
"Long time no see Adonis," Trish smirked at the demon, Adonis looked away in disgust.
"I am not a child nor do I need a babysitter," Vergil said as he walked into the room.
"Vergil-" Rei started.
Vergil locked eyes with the blond haired woman next to Rei. In less than a second Vergil had Trish pinned to the nearest wall, by her neck.
"VERGIL!" Rei shouted.
"...his...reaction is the...same-" Trish choked as Vergil's grip became tighter.
"You-you dare take the image of my mother?!" Vergil roared in anger.
"Vergil. Let her go," Rei stated firmly.
Vergil snarled at Rei's command. Anger flared through his body, something forgotten, and something that wanted to crush this unknown woman's throat and shred her to pieces. He had no inkling as to who this woman was or why she looked like his mother, but the image of his mother's broken, bloodied, shredded body was enough for Vergil to kill this woman.
"Vergil. I order you to unhand her. Now," Rei said calmly.
"I-" Vergil began when he involuntarily released his grip on the woman's neck. Trish gasped loudly and fell to her knees and began coughing and gasping for air.
"W-What?" Vergil asked confused as he looked at his hand.
Trish quickly stood behind Rei as she still heaved for air, Vergil turned his attention to Rei and glared.
"What did you do to me?" Vergil hissed.
"It's within your blood contract," Adonis replied amused at the sight that happened in front of him.
"You-" Vergil began.
"It's Rei," Rei corrected Vergil as she glanced at Trish behind her.
"You alright?"
"Yep. Wow...I was prepared for a sword...not to be choked," Trish commented as she looked at Vergil.
"You weren't kidding about that blood contract were you?" Trish said as she rubbed her neck.
"No, I wasn't," Rei replied her voice void of any emotion as she continued to stare at Vergil
"You're gonna get wrinkles if you keep frowning Vergil," Trish quipped.
"Who are you and why are you in the image of my deceased mother?" Vergil growled. Trish studied Vergil for a few moments before glancing at Rei beside her.
"I didn't want to believe you at the Gates of Hell...but what I see before me...is indeed the elder Sparda," Trish began.
"I told you so," Rei said and crossed her arms. Adonis scoffed and quickly exited the room.
"I am not your enemy...I'll tell you as much as I can from when I first met your brother, Dante," Trish said as she motioned towards the sofa. Vergil looked over Trish as she sat on the sofa. She motioned to the sofa across from her, of course before taking a seat Vergil looked over her once more before taking a seat. Rei sighed and sat next to Trish.
"Mundus...," Vergil trailed under his breath.
Trish finished telling Vergil all that she knew about Dante, his father, and mother, along with events that had recently passed.
"You have my thanks for the history lesson, but that does not explain how I was found in the Inferno or why she came after me,"
"I can't help you with that. I'm surprised that Rei hasn't told you more but you also mou might be able to get a little more from Lady though," Trish replied.
"You'll have to talk to Lady about that one,"
"...The woman you spoke about earlier?" Vergil asked.
"How is Lady I haven't seen her in a while...," Rei commented.
"She's doing quite well...She and I were vacationing in Fortuna, but I came back to check in on Dante," Trish commented.
"Fortuna?" Vergil asked.
"Does it sound familiar to you?" Rei asked, shocked at Vergil knowing of Fortuna. Fortuna was pretty far away from the metropolis that she and Dante resided in.
"It does...but I can't remember what this place looks like," Vergil replied. Trish stood and stretched when she had arrived it was early afternoon, and now it was late evening.
"But I do have to tell you...it won't be easy getting into Fortuna," Trish started.
"Why? Everything was almost in shambles the last time I heard," Rei commented.
"That was true. But they have been hauling ass rebuilding everything...but it's mostly because of Lady. She won't be happy to see him alive," Trish said as she nodded towards Vergil. Vergil glared coldly at the woman across from him.
"And that means?" Rei asked confused.
"Sometimes you're so dense...I'll just let you find out the hard way. I'll see you when you get there, ciao," Trish said as she headed towards the door.
"Bye?" Rei said confused as she heard the door open and close.
Vergil leaned back into the soft plush sofa, he relaxed. He didn't know why he was so tense during the conversation with Trish but knew he had a lot of information to digest and hopefully jog his memory that was lacking. He sighed softly as his hand went to his chest, where the amulet should be and where the puncture wound still throbbed.
Rei silently watched Vergil's movements, his hand going to his chest for the amulet, or for the wound she wondered.
"Alright...so..." Rei started, Vergil's ice blue eyes focused on Rei waiting for her to continue to speak.
"I think it would beneficial if we were to go to Fortuna to meet Lady and see Nero while we're there," Rei continued.
"Do you think you'll have enough strength to walk around and whatnot?"
"Of course," Vergil replied.
"Good...it's a start to regaining your memories," Rei smiled as she looked at Vergil.
Vergil remained stoic as he looked at Rei smiling across from him. He didn't know what to expect or even fully trust her yet, but yet he felt a sense of warmth from her.
"Well let's get some food in you...also...you don't just have to sit there...you can definitely explore," Rei said as she began to walk towards the kitchen.
"Thanks," Vergil scoffed as he shifted on the sofa his chest throbbing, more thoughts of his conversation with Trish flooded his mind once again. Dante, Arkham, the quest for power and ripping open Hell just to achieve that power. His father Sparda, he and his brother were to inherit that power from their father if they were able to obtain it.
Vergil grunted as he stood, following his nose he went towards the kitchen.
