Chapter 2: Rosette Christopher

Silence.

That was what had spread across the apartment the six young adults were staying at. Again. Though, compared to last time, this was awkward silence. Very awkward.

Rei was sitting in the windowsill again, staring out the window. However, he was not much lost in thoughts. In fact, he was very aware that all the others were staring at him. Something, which was starting to piss him off greatly.

The others on the other hand just kept watching Rei. They were attempting to read their friend but so far all of them were very deeply unsuccessful. At the same time, they were either trying to figure out how to ask Rei about the grave visit, or waiting for one of the others to ask the question.

Rei's brow soon twitched and he turned his head to look at the others. "What?"

The others twitched by Rei's sudden turn to them, "…" still none of them knew what to ask.

"…" Kai sighed deeply and stood to his feet, "Rei.. We-"

Before he could further get to continue his sentence, there was a sudden knock on the apparent front door into the apartment they were at. This caused everyone to turn their attention away from the tension and towards the door instead, which shortly afterwards opened.

In through the door stepped a woman, better known as Judy, Max's mom. A quite familiar face to them. She had told she would arrive that day, and she had requested for them to do something for her. However, they didn't know what exactly it was yet.

A bright smile quite quickly plastered itself onto Max's face before he quickly went over to hug his mother, "It's so good to see you!"

Judy chuckles softly and hugged back her son, "It's very good to see you too, Max." she then smiled to the rest of them, "It's good to see you all."

Tyson gave a grin, "So, what is it we can help you with?" they had to push their tension with Rei aside for now and focus on Judy; no need to get her involved.

Judy gave a small smile to the young adults before turning her head and motioning for another person to follow her inside; then the front door could also be closed properly.

A blonde female about their age stepped up next to Judy. She had a suitcase in one hand, and she did not look further happy.

"This is Miranda Jones; she's the daughter of a colleague of mine. She has had some problems with socializing with other people the past many years and doesn't have any friends. All of you are so different, yet stick together strong and are all very nice people, so I hoped you could help her and perhaps become friends with her." Judy gave a smile.

Miranda let out a "Tsch." And didn't bother to look at any of the people; she quite stubbornly looked the other way.

"Of course we can." Tyson and Max were quite quick to burst out. They loved making friends, so that was not an opportunity to let pass.

A sly smirk also came to cross Tyson's lips, "Besides; we have Kai. No one can be harder to befriend than him."

Kai's brow gave a twitch as he glanced at Tyson out of the corner of his eye.

Kenny gave a weak smile, "Easy now.." he then smiled to towards Miranda, "Don't worry; you won't get to feel left out here."

Hilary had a smile on her face too; she didn't mind some more female company. She was all too used only being surrounded by boys.

Judy smiled, "I'm glad to hear so." She glanced at the watch attached to her wrist, "I'm sorry, but I have to leave already now. I had wanted to stay longer but I'm quite busy today." She quickly gave Max another hug before she bid them all farewell and left out the door without much more to say.

As the door closed, an awkward silence soon spread across the room again. However, this time it didn't stay for long as Tyson jumped over in front of Miranda. "Hi Miranda, I'm Tyson!" the wide, friendly grin Tyson was known for was spread across his face while he held out his hand for a handshake.

Miranda did not smile and she did not take Tyson's hand to shake. She merely looked straight at him with angry eyes, "Don't call me Miranda." She snarled. "I despise that name with a passion."

"…Err, okay?" Tyson blinked, "What do you want to be called instead then?" No, he did not intend to give up yet.

Miranda raised an eyebrow at Tyson, "What I want to be called?"

"Yes?" Tyson tilted his head to the side.

In the meantime, the others were watching the scene, waiting for an answer to the question also. It would be nice to have at least something to call her.

Miranda stared a bit at Tyson; she hadn't been asked that question before. She stared at him for a bit longer before she then decided to answer; "Rosette. Rosette Christopher."

Tyson blinked before smiling brightly, "Alright! Hi Rosette, I'm Tyson!" he held his hand out for a handshake again.

"…" Miranda, now Rosette, stared a bit at Tyson's face before looking down at his hand. "…." She decided to reach her hand forward and shake hands with him. She had never tried before that someone listened to her wanting to be called that. "…Hi."

Not everyone gave out the bright smile as Tyson; Hilary's brow was quite twitching. First that name had appeared in the book; nothing wrong with that. Then it had appeared on the grave stone, which was freaking weird. Now this girl wanted to be called by that name? What the hell? All in all, why in the world did she want to be called by another name?

"…" Kai was just watching the scene, saying nothing. Slowly his eyes turned from the others and towards Rei; Rei had returned his attention out the window and apparently was not giving the whole situation with this new girl any attention so far. It was weird… Usually Rei didn't mind meeting new people either.

In the meantime, Max and Kenny had gone over to greet Rosette as well. When she was going to be with them for a while, it was only proper to introduce one self.

Hilary huffed and walked up to Rosette, "And why is it you should suddenly be called by another name?" she started, "What is wrong with the name your parents have given you, huh?"

Max blinked, "Hilary?"

Rosette twitched before narrowing her eyes at Hilary, "I have my reasons."

"Tsch. Whatever those reasons are they're surely stupid!" Hilary hissed.

"Shut up Hilary!" Rei snapped as he turned his attention from the window and towards the others.

Hilary twitched and looked towards Rei; the others did the same. It was an uncommon outburst from the usual calm Chinese.

"If she wants to be called by another name, then respect it. You don't walk up to a gay person and tell them they should convert to straight because it's wrong to be gay, do you?" Rei asked.

"Uhm…" Hilary started.

"Do you?" Rei asked again.

"No…" Hilary looked towards the floor.

"Then don't try to lecture her about what name she feels best being called." Rei huffed and finally got off the windowsill to stand on his feet on the floor before he stepped closer to the others.

Hilary mumbled something and looked the other way.

Rei looked from Hilary and towards Rosette, giving her a gentle smile, "Sorry about that. People are just a little edgy here today."

"It's alright…" Rosette dragged the words out a bit, slowly turning her blue eyes up to look at Rei's face.

Rei blinked as he got a closer look at Rosette's face. She looked exactly like… her.

Rosette blinked as she stared back at Rei. His face it looked so much like… and the recognition in his eyes..! "…Chrno?" there was a strong hope to hear in her voice.

Rei twitched, his eyes widening slightly. '… Impossible..!' it was the only thought which could pass Rei's mind at that given moment.

The name Rosette had let out did not go unheard past Hilary's ears and she gave a quick twitch before pointing straight at Rosette, "So that's where you have the name from!"

Rosette twitched and looked at Hilary, her attention getting torn from Rei, "Eh?"

Hilary huffed, "Bullshit to steal a name from a book! What are you, obsessed?"

Rosette's eyes narrowed, "What the hell are you talking about?"

"You know exactly what I'm talking about!" Hilary hissed, "So, do you believe in demons too?"

Rosette's eyes narrowed further, "If you really want to know; then yes, demons freaking exist."

"Do not! I can't see why Judy came with you here; you belong in a mental hospital!" Hilary snapped.

Rosette twitched before growling, "Why you..!"

"O-OI! Relax" Tyson called and tried to step in between the two girls. "We're not supposed to fight we're supposed to be friends! Rei where are you going!?" just out of the corner of his eye Tyson spotted Rei walking around them all and just disappear out of the room, leaving them to their fight.

"SCREW YOU!" Rosette and Hilary snapped in unison before they twitched as they noticed Rei's leave too, just as he closed the door behind him, "…"

"…" Kai sighed deeply and shook his head before looking towards them, "Act like adults instead of this fighting! It's giving everyone else a headache!"

Hilary twitched and pointed at Rosette, "But she-!"

"COINCIDENCES!" Kai snapped. There was no way in hell he would believe in there actually was a connection between the book, the grave and this girl just because they all had the same name.

And so they all fell silent. At least until they got forth to they had to go look for Rei.

Look for Rei in the unfortunate circumstance which was that it had begun to rain, and the rain was only becoming stronger.

"GodDAMNIT!" Rei let out as he punched a fist through a brick wall. "Of all reincarnations; WHY HER?!"

Rei gritted his teeth before slowly sinking to his knees on the ground as he had pulled his hand out of the wall again. His hair was sticking all over his face, and his clothes glued itself to his body as the rain by now was pouring down around him; it had long ago soaked him to the bone.

He was clenching his hands into fists before slowly unclenching them, his hands becoming loose in his lap. Of all people to be reincarnated, Rosette Christopher got reincarnated. And she didn't just get reincarnated; she looked exactly like back in 1924 (just a few years older) and she could freaking remember her past. He had seen it in her eyes, heard the hope in her voice when she had thought he was Chrno. A fake smile crossed Rei's lips as his bangs hid his face, "Close Rosette, but not exactly." He mumbled, no one there to hear him.

The door to the apartment slammed closed as Tyson stepped inside, soaked to the bone; he, however, wasn't the only one soaked to the bone. Pretty much everyone else was as well.

"No luck finding him either?" Max asked.

Tyson shook his head, "No…"

Hilary huffed, "Where in the world could he be?"

"Technically he could be anywhere and Chicago is a very big city, so…" Kenny trailed off.

Kai sighed, "He doesn't answer his cell phone and we can't find him. We have tried to get to him, but he obviously doesn't want to be found at the moment, so the best thing we can do is just wait for him to come back by himself."

"But-" Tyson started.

Kai looked towards Tyson, "When has Rei not been able to care for himself?"

"…Good point." Tyson sighed.

"…" Rosette looked away from them all and out the window. Her eyes had become half-lidded; she had been so sure in that moment it had been Chrno, but she had begun to doubt. She could easily have seen wrongly. She sighed softly.

Yet again, silence filled the apartment. However, this time was of completely different reasons; it was the middle of the night and everyone had returned to their beds to get some sleep, or at least try to get some sleep. Rei still hadn't shown up which had made people worried; but they couldn't do much more to find him yet.

Rosette sat on the edge of the bed she had been given, just staring towards one of the windows on which the rain was hammering against the glass. A sudden sound caught her attention and she turned her head towards the door, "…" slowly she moved her feet to the floor, pushed herself off the bed and moved silently over to the door, opened it and looking out at the living room of the apartment.

A figure was closing and locking the front door behind him before wringing of soaked shoes and shirt before moving further into the apartment towards one of the other bedrooms. However, the figure stopped shortly by one of the windows, looking out at the rain.

"…" Rosette carefully opened her bedroom door a bit more so she could move into the other room. She silently walked up to stand next to the figure. Once closer, she could see it was Rei.

Rei's golden eyes were half-lidded as he was looking out through the windows. He soon after sighed softly and looked down at Rosette.

"…" Rosette stared back at Rei for a little while before her eyes lowered to look downwards, "…I'm sorry I called you Chrno earlier. I mistook you for someone else…"

"…" Rei sighed softly, "It's alright. I believe it's not the worst name I could be called.."

"… May I ask you a question?" Rosette asked carefully after a little while longer of silence.

"I guess you can." Rei muttered, looking out through the window again.

"… Do you believe in demons?" Rosette asked. Hilary's outburst about demons being fictional earlier had pissed her off, but the others hadn't commented on it. She wanted to know if it was only this Hilary person of these people who didn't believe in demons… If there actually was a chance that others believed in them…

"…" Rei shook his head, "I don't believe in demons. I believe people can be evil enough to be called demons, but not in demons."

Rosette gave a small nod, "I see…"

"…" Rei looked down at Rosette before sighing softly, "Go to bed, Rosette. I'm sure you need your sleep." He then moved away from her and towards the room where he slept and where his clothing should be. He needed dry clothing. Probably also a warm shower. He had been outside in the rain for too long.

"…Sleep well…" Rosette muttered as she looked after Rei, before returning to the room she had come from.

MT: And so 2nd chapter has been re-written as well. When I look over it myself I can tell it has gone through some changes as well; over all it's the same but the details have gone deeper. From less than 4 pages to almost 6 pages long chapter is an improvement, at least in chapter length, ne?

Please read and review! It will be very appreciated!
