Marina:
"Shhh…it's okay…I'm here Ryd…no need to cry," I said to the small baby as I picked him up and cradled him in my arms. I placed the nipple of the bottle into his wailing mouth and his cries immediately stopped, leaving the room completely silent except for the sound of the soft suckling. I yawned and looked down to find Ryder looking up at me, his small eyes shimmering against the light from the moon. After Ryder had finished most of the bottle, I lifted him up and rested his fragile head on my shoulder while patting his back. I stood up and walked around, listening to the little whimpers coming from Ryder's mouth and finally hearing a little burp escape his lips.
"That was a big one Ryd! Now it's time to go back to bed, cause I got to get up for school soon," I said to the baby as I gently stroked his back and lightly bounced him up and down. I looked out the window and sighed when her car wasn't parked in its usual spot in the driveway. I continued to stare at the moon and rubbing Ryder's back until I heard his steady breathing against my ear. I walked back over to the crib and carefully placed him on top of the plush blanket, making sure he didn't wake up. When I was successful, I collapsed onto my mother's bed and fell into a deep slumber.
My body instantly jolted out of the bed when Ryder's cries echoed through the entire room. I got up and looked over at the time; realizing that I had my first day of school in 90 minutes. I picked up Ryder and held him, "Ready for school?" I asked the baby as the corners of his mouth rose in an adorable smile. "Yes we are!" After changing Ryder's diaper and clothes, I placed him onto the bed and left him with a toy to play with while I quickly grabbed the items for my outfit and went right into the bathroom.
I picked up my backpack and fastened it tightly to my shoulders and picked up Ryder, his alert eyes looking everywhere. I smiled down at him as we walked down the stairs and headed into the kitchen. I felt my phone buzz as I pulled out two bottles of formula and placed it into the pot of boiled water. I pulled it out and looked at the message.
"From: Dad
I'll be there in 5!"
I grinned and placed the phone down on the table, grabbing a hot pocket from the freezer and expertly opening it using only my hand and mouth. I placed the hot pocket into the microwave as Ryder cooed in my arms and I pressed my lips against his forehead. I started walking around with Ryder when I heard the doorbell. I walked over and unlocked the door, revealing a very eager and excited Dad. "Dad!"
"Hey Sweetie!" He said to me as he hugged me and kissed Ryder on the top of his head. "Hey there Buddy," he whispered. "Do you mind putting him in the car seat? Mom still isn't back and I don't want to leave him alone." He nodded as I gave him Ryder, "Of course Mar."
I ran upstairs and grabbed diapers, wipes, and extra clothes and stuffed them into Ryd's baby bag. When I came back down, I watched my Dad smile when Ryder wrapped his tiny fingers around my Dad's large pointer finger. I grabbed the formula and placed them into the bag, "Alright, let's get going."
Dad picked up the car seat and walked out the door first, and I followed suit. "And just where in the hell do you think you're going with my children?"
I froze in place and looked at the driveway to find my Mom staggering towards us. "He's just tak –"
"Shut up Marina. Daniel, what did I say about holding MY son? He's not yours, get over it." My dad placed Ryder down gently and spoke to my mother in a calm tone. "Patrice, whether he is or isn't my son; I'm not going to let him be in a house by himself without his own mother there."
"So now you're telling me how to raise my own damn children? Go screw yourself Daniel."
"Patrice, let's not do this now. Just let me drive my child to her first day of school; that's all I want to do."
"If you ever dare come near Ryan again then I'm calling the cops. Marina go put him the house."
"Screw you."
"Excuse me?"
"We're going to be late Dad. Besides…I'm tired of playing Mommy."
I could still hear the sounds of my mother's screaming as my Dad drove silently down the road. "Marina…" he said, breaking the uncomfortable silence.
"I don't want to talk about it Dad."
"C'mon Kiddo, it's not your Mom's fault," he said to me as his hand glided over and squeezed mine. I recoiled and folded my arms across my chest, "Don't you dare tell me that it's okay, or it's not her fault. She's being absolutely fucking ridiculous!"
"Language…" my Dad warned. "Sorry."
"Listen, go easy on her alright? She does a lot for you and your brother." I couldn't believe the bullshit my Dad had been saying to me; the last thing I wanted to do was to give that woman any time of the day.
"Sure Dad, I guess; whatever. I would just like to get to school on time," I said blatantly.
"Just call me Jeeves sweetie."
