"Alright, Ayano-san, can you stand on this scale for me."
A young girl with empty charcoal eyes and dark hair stepped onto the scale. The nurse moved some weights on the scale. 11.3 kilograms.
"Great! Can you please stand up straight? We are going to check your height now."
Ayano followed the woman's instructions. The nurse moved the measurement thing to reach the girl's head. 100.3 centimeters.
"Now sit over there. I'm going to check some things."
The nurse proceeded to check the girl's eyes, ears, nose, and throat. After that, the nurse checked out Ayano's reflexes and heartbeat. Once the examination was over, the nurse left to give the results to the doctor.
"You did great, Pumpkin," said Muko Aishi.
"Thank you, Oto-san," Ayano replied. No matter how polite she is, her father always gave a disturbed look. Ayano never knows why.
The pair waited for a couple of minutes. Muko tried to play around with Ayano. Of course, Ayano complied with his antics. The whole experience still seemed dull for Ayano. Nothing new there.
"Sorry for the wait," a voice boomed during the father-daughter patty-cake game. "My name is Doctor Ishi."
The two men shook hands while the nurse returned with a clipboard. The doctor grabbed the clipboard and took out a couple of pages. He glanced at Ayano; she looked like a porcelain doll on a store shelf.
"So, you are here because your daughter lacks emotions," Doctor Ishi said.
"Yes," Muko replied. "My wife says its a normal thing on her side of the family, but I'm worried that's not the case."
"We really don't have a solid explanation for that. We have a guess though. Your daughter is extremely underweight. We think her body isn't accepting nutrients well."
"How does that relate to her emotions?"
"Again, we don't really know the cause, but we think her lack of nutrients causes her brain to not fully develop. We are going to prescribe you some nutrient medications. We also recommend giving her plenty of vitamins. We expect her to be back in a couple of weeks to see her progress."
~~AND~~
Ayano sat silently in her room while she looked out the window. Rampant thoughts plagued her mind ever since she left the doctor's office.
"Ayano, come down for dinner!" the sweet voice of Ryoba Aishi as she walked into Ayano's room.
"Ka-san, what is wrong with me?"
"Ayano, sweetie, what do you mean?"
"I overheard Oto-san say something about my emotions. Iā"
"Don't have any?"
"Yes. Was I really like you?"
Ryoba squatted down to Ayano's level and held her hands.
"I was exactly like you."
"So, your entire world seemed gray."
Ryoba sighed and said, "Yes."
"How did you fix it?"
"I met your father. You will one day meet someone who will make you feel complete."
Ryoba stood up and pulled Ayano up with her. She brushed her hair aside and kissed her forehead.
"Once you find that person, you must never let them go."
The two Aishi women walked down the stairs to Ayano's awaiting dinner. Ryoba quickly released Ayano's hands once Muko was in her line of sight. As Ayano sat down in her chair, the doorbell rang.
"Oh, he's here!" Muko exclaimed.
"Who's here, darling?" Ryoba asked.
Muko stood up and said, "Ayano's medications aren't available at our local pharmacy, so we have to travel to Osaka. I know you wouldn't want me gone for too long, so I hired a babysitter to watch Ayano while we are gone."
Muko went over to open the door. A young teenage boy with pink hair stood at the entrance. His hair is short in the back and formed into long drills at the front. His skin tone is light paired with his purple eyes. He wore the black uniform of Akademi High. He must have come straight from there since he was still holding a backpack.
"You must be Mujo Kina," Muko greeted. "I hope my daughter will be safe in your care."
"No need to worry, Aishi-san," the boy assured. "I am certified in CPR, and I can cook and clean well. I am also very patient with children."
"Good. My wife and I should be back by ten o'clock."
After giving Mujo a list of rules, Ryoba and Muko quickly left. Mujo entered the house to see a young girl quietly eating her dinner of mash potatoes and carrots. The girl looked up and Mujo was a little taken aback. Her eyes looked dead.
"Are you the babysitter?" Ayano asked.
"Yes, my name is Mujo Kina."
There was an awkward silence after that. Ayano continued to eat, and Mujo didn't know what to do. Normally, kids would start acting rebellious or crazy, but Ayano seems really well behaved for a four-year-old. Desperate for something to do, Mujo looked at his surroundings.
"That's quite a lot of knives," Mujo spoke up looking at the kitchen.
"Ka-san likes to use them," Ayano says. "She would say she used them a lot during high school."
"Oh, is she a skilled chef?" Mujo asked. Ayano shrugged and kept eating. More awkward silence filled the atmosphere. Ayano finished eating and tried to get out of her chair while holding her plate. Unfortunately, she fell and broke the plate. One of the shards got stuck on her knee.
"Oh dear! Hold on Ayano-chan!" Mujo exclaimed
He took out a first aid kit from his backpack and got out some bandages and antiseptic. He gently dislodged the china shard and cleaned Ayano's wounds. He wrapped up Ayano's cut and laid her on the living room couch.
"You must be careful, Ayano-chan," Mujo scolded. "You were lucky to get only one cut."
"Sorry, Kina-san," Ayano apologized.
"You don't have to call me that," Mujo said. "Think of me as a close friend instead of some stranger."
"But you are a stranger," Ayano replied. "I just met you.
Mujo was shocked for a bit, but he quickly recovered.
"Do you have anything to play with?"
"I have some toys in my room. We can go there if you want."
The black and pink duo went up to Ayano's room. Once again, Mujo was very shocked. Ayano's room is filled with many plushies and small figurines. Mujo has never seen a room with this many toys.
"That's a lot of toys, Ayano-chan," Mujo complimented.
"Oto-san keeps giving me toys to make me happy," Ayano explained as she picked up a bunny plush.
"Your Oto-san must do a lot for you," Mujo said. "You must do a lot for him for all he does for you."
Mujo looked over to see Ayano thinking about something. Mujo decided to play around with her. Despite her weird behavior, Ayano has been Mujo's favorite kid to babysit. She is really polite and well behaved. Eventually, Ayano became comfortable enough to start saying Mujo-kun. Soon enough, ten o'clock came around, and Ayano's parents arrived. Muko rushed over to Ayano's side and hugged her. To everyone's surprise, Ayano hugged back with an excited face. Her voice still sounded very robotic.
"How are you, Pumpkin?" Muko asked.
"I'm great, Oto-san!" Ayano exclaimed with new vigor. "I played a lot with Mujo-kun."
"You must have a lot of fun!" Ryoba said with an interesting look. Ayano smiled and nodded. Ryoba looked down at her knee. "Ayano, dear, what happened to your knee?!"
"I accidentally fell and broke a plate. Mujo-kun helped me."
"Thank you, Mujo-san, for watching her," Muko thanked.
"It was no problem, Aishi-san," Mujo replied. "She is one of the best kids I have taken care of."
He tried to walk over to the adult Aishis, but he ended up tripping on one of Ayano's toys causing Ayano to giggle. It was at that moment that Ryoba decided to keep Mujo around.
The second chapter completed!
So, we got our first "rival" introduction. I didn't know how to introduce Mujo and Mido without making it too weird, so I decided to introduce them early on in Ayano's new life (Mido will be introduced next chapter). To clarify, Mujo isn't Ayano's Senpai. Instead, he influenced Ayano to start faking her emotions, but she'll only do it around him and her family (for now).
