Doki Doki: New World

Chapter 2

Jack

Hearing Rosalene hum while we walked through the village was...kind of nice. I hadn't heard anything related to music since I got here, and it seemed like she was humming a specific tune. "Rosalene?"

"Yes, Jack?"

"What's the name of the song you're humming?" I asked.

"Oh! It was one of my favorite's when I was a kid! It's called 'Moonlit Heart'." she smiled. "My daddy would play it on his guitar to get me to go to sleep."

She seems a bit childish for her age. Although, I have to admit, she is rather pleasant company. "Sounds like a beautiful song."

"It is!" she suddenly stopped. Looking back at her, she was staring at a certain building.

"Rosalene?" she looked to me, then looked down at her feet. Following her gaze, I noticed she wasn't wearing any shoes. Or any decent clothing for that matter. Just dirty old rags. "You need clothes."

"Yeah..."

"Well, come on." taking her hand into my own, I led her inside the shop.

"Welcome to Lillith's Clothing Store!" the woman behind the counter said happily. "I'm Lillith! How can I help you two?"

"Lillith..." I repeated the name in my head. "I hope you four are doing okay..."

"Yeah, we need some clothes for this one." I patted Rosalene on her back.

"Hmm..." Lillith placed a hand on her chin in thought. "I have some adventure clothing that'll fit her. That's what you two are, right? Adventurers?"

"Yeah." I nodded.

"Great!" she started heading towards the back. "I'll be right out with some fresh clothes!"

Walking around the store, I looked for anything that might come in handy for any jobs that I'd take. But all there was were clothes and shoes. "Hmm..."

"Jack, look!" Rosalene said, getting my attention. Looking back, she was wearing a pair of really nice leather boots that reached up to her knees. "Can we buy them?"

"Sure thing." I placed my hand on her head.

"Okay, I think I found something the little lady would like to wear." Lillith said, dropping a lot of clothes onto the counter. "Look through it and pick out whatever catches your eye!"

Rosalene looked to me before moving towards the counter. Shuffling through the clothes carefully, she picked out a pair of shorts, a longsleeve shirt, a jacket, a cloak similar to my own, and a hair tie.

"Okay!" Lillith smiled. "Head into that room there and see if you like them!"

Rosalene did as told, heading into the room and shutting the door behind her. After a few minutes, the door opened and I was impressed with what I saw. She looked like a whole new person, ready for anything.

Her hair was tied back in a ponytail, the jacket was undone, showing her shirt that had a small triangular cut where her cleavage was, the cloak hung around her loosely, and her boots pulled the whole look together.

"How do I look?" she asked.

"Like a true adventurer." I said before turning to Lillith. "How much for it?"

"Six golden coins." she replied.

Reaching into my coin purse, I pulled out eight and handed them over. "The extra two is a tip."

"Alright!" she smiled as we left.

Walking down the street, I found the local Inn and walked inside. Approaching the bar tender, I leaned against the counter. Placing two silver coins on the counter, I slid them over. "Any jobs available?"

He took the coins and proceeded to pour both of us a drink. "See that guy back there?" he gestured to the back of the Inn. Looking back, I saw some shady looking guy. "He came in and told me to tell anyone who asked he had a very specific job. High paying."

"Thanks." downing the drink, I walked over to him.

Looking down at the man, I grabbed a chair and sat down, Rosalene did the same. "You have a job?" I asked him.

"Yes. Are you capable?" he asked.

"Capable enough."

"Good to hear." he reached back and pulled out a very large bag of coins, placing them on the table. "This is half of the expected payment. You'll receive the other half when the job is done."

"What's the job?"

"I need you to steal a very valuable piece of jewelry off of someone." he replied. "Here." he slid over a poster of a girl.

"An elf?" I asked. "What's the jewelry?"

"A diamond ring with rubies and emeralds engraved on the sides. Very valuable in the black market."

"Consider it done." I said as I took the bag of coins and handed them to Rosalene. "Where will she be?"

"She'll be passing through town in one day." he replied.

"Alright." I placed a hand on Rosalene's shoulder. "Come on."

Heading back to the bartender, I placed ten silver pieces on the counter. "A room for two."

He took the silver then pointed upstairs. "Third room on the right."

Heading upstairs, we walked into our room, seeing two beds on each side of the room. "Pick a bed and fall into it." I told her. "I'm gonna count this."

"Okay." she yawned. "Goodnight."

Sitting down at the desk, I emptied the bag on the desk. Countless gold coins spilled out from it. "Holy shit!"

I held the bag at the end of the desk, sliding one piece of gold inside as I counted. After about five minutes, I stood up in shock. "Two thousand gold pieces." I ran my hands through my hair. "Holy shit, I hit the jackpot!" my excitement was quickly replaced with curiosity. "If he's willing to pay this much, before the job has even started, then who the hell am I stealing from?"
