I hadn't seen Matthew since high school, and we hadn't talked or texted in over a year. His sister Maddie and I remained friends after my music career took off. We were never best friends, but she always treated me the same, and I liked that about her. Matthew was her older brother whom I had the biggest crush on all through high school. He was only ten months older than Maddie, but we were all in the same grade level.
I'd lost Matthew's number by accident and when I realized that I had a week off in New York I asked his sister for it and asked him if he wanted to meet up for coffee to catch up. Relationships hadn't been going well for me here lately. I fell too hard too fast, and I was tired of being judged for it. Matthew was always the one guy that I regretted not trying to date, and part of me really wanted to try to be with him now. It was a shot in the dark. No guy wants to date a girl who lives under a microscope, but I still hoped that maybe Matthew would.
He was working on being a writer, which let's face it, besides his looks, it made him all the more attractive. I couldn't help but smile when I thought about what he might be like now. I wondered if he still kept his hair really short, and if he still wore sneakers with every outfit. I wondered if he still wore the same necklace his dad gave his before he passed away. I mostly wondered if he still wondered about me.
He said we'd meet at 10, I assumed he'd be late. Matthew was always late. I walked into the Broadway Cafe at exactly ten o'clock. I slowly glanced around to try and spot him, and to my left a tall guy with purposely messy dirty blonde hair was steadying a chair and holding back a laugh with a crooked smile. My Matthew, what a klutz.
