Captain Nut Nut: Thanks so much. Personally, I would love it if this happens but maybe not so far into the future, haha. Thanks for reviewing.
Casuallycasualty: Me too. Absolutely gutted :-(
ReadingxTherapy: Same here. I never expected my favourite character to leave so soon, but I understand why she had to go and I respect her decision. Max's line is basically what Rita said when Connie first entered the ED with Grace. It seemed to fit lol.
casualtyfics111: Thank you. Writing this is like therapy, it's really helping me get over her exit. I was aiming at a double act between them, thought it'd be quite cute. That is intentional and it's thanks to the clever brain of Giatrix. She helped me come up with the name, which was really kind. I did think that but because she's Lily's daughter, I quite liked the idea of her acting way older than her actual age.
Kim Seo Yeona: Thank you so much. I know, right? It would be amazing if Lily returns years later with a child.
citylightsonthewater: Thank you! That's such a lovely thing to say. I'm glad that you like it.
A: I have lots of ideas for it. I know, I am so upset and I'm really going to miss her. Hopefully she will come back some day.
Chapter Two
Lily pressed her finger against the button of the vending machine and waited until the bottle of water was snatched from its home and dropped from a great height. Nia bent down and slid her hand through the slot to get to the water.
"Thanks Mum," she said. "But I would have preferred a coke."
"You've already had your treat for today," Lily said, playfully ruffling her hair.
Nia unscrewed the lid of her water bottle and had a sip, just as Robyn and Ethan strolled over. Both of them wore big smiles, but they seemed surprised at her sudden arrival, and even more suprised at the mini version that stood next to her.
"A little birdie told us that you were back," Robyn said, immediately wrapping her arms around Lily. "I've missed you."
"I've missed you too," Lily replied, smiling awkwardly at Ethan, before gesturing to Nia. "This is Nia, my um...My daughter. Nia, this is Robyn and Ethan."
"Aren't you just a prescious little thing? You're so adorable," Robyn cooed and crouched down to Nia's level.
Lily could see the look of anger and frustration in Nia's eyes. The youngster had always been rather mature for her age and if there was one thing that she hated, it was people telling her how adorable she was and talking to her as if she was a baby.
"Aren't you adorable?" Nia bit back, smirking proudly to herself.
"Don't be rude, baby," Lily said and placed a hand on her shoulder. She gave Robyn a reassuring smile and asked, "How's Charlotte?"
"She's doing well," Robyn said, standing back up. "She's..."
"Staff Nurse Miller!" Connie's voice suddenly echoed throughout the ED, and the three heads turned to see her standing a few inches away from them. "I need a new set of bloods for Mr Davies. Chop chop, please."
"Sorry," Robyn sighed, turning back to face Lily and Nia. "I have to get back to work."
"Nia and I were going to go on a girly shopping trip later," Lily mentioned. "If you want to, you can join us when you've finished work. Charlotte can come too if she wants."
"Well, Charlotte is at a friends house later," Robyn said. "But I'd be happy to come along. We can catch up more then."
She waved goodbye to Nia and hurried off down the corridor, in fear of being told off by Connie. Lily laughed and shook her head, turning back to Ethan who'd just been stood there in total silence, unsure of what to say.
"How are you doing?" Lily whispered.
"Better," Ethan answered. "Thank you. It's um...It's really good to see you. I...I've missed you and I'm sorry that I couldn't be here on your last day. It would have been nice to say a proper goodbye."
"It's okay," Lily said, looking down at Nia who looked completely bored and uninterested. "Ethan is mummy's best friend, and once upon a time he was her only friend."
"I like your glasses," Nia said. "I have glasses too, but I don't always like wearing them. People tease me."
"Ah, well, you shouldn't let that get to you," Ethan advised her. "They're just secretly jealous because I bet you look awesome with glasses. Saves bumping into things, eh?"
"You're funny," Nia laughed. "I like you."
"Thank you," Ethan said. "You're exactly like your mum, and I'd take that as a compliment."
Lily smiled and wrapped an arm around her daughters shoulder. "Did you get my note?" She asked Ethan.
"I still have it," Ethan said. "I um...I often read it if I'm upset. Thank you. It was...It was really kind of you." There was a pause, before he spoke again. "Shall we go to the staffroom?"
Lily nodded, knowing that they would be able to talk properly in there without any interruptions. Lily gestured for Nia to follow her and the three of them began to slowly walk down the corridor.
"About that job you left me with," Ethan said, as he pushed open the door to the staffroom. "I've done my best but it's hard to mend a broken heart, Lily."
"I feel so bad," Lily whispered, shutting the door and crossing her arms. "And he's only going to hate me more now."
Lily gestured towards Nia who was helping herself to a biscuit from the biscuit tin, and Ethan followed her gaze to see what she meant.
"It might take him a while to get his head around things," Ethan whispered. "But he certainly won't hate you. He loves you, Lily, and he's going to love Nia just as much. Um...Do...Do you have any idea on when you're going to tell him?"
"No," Lily sighed. "Honestly, I don't. I was going to talk to him today but then Mrs Beauchamp informed me that he has the day off. I'm not sure whether that's necessarily a good thing or not." She hung her head and perched herself on the arm of the sofa. "Nia is really excited to meet her dad."
"Every kid deserves to know who their parents are," Ethan said. "You did a good thing, coming back. Iain should be back tomorrow, so why not relax and get yourself settled back into Holby today? Take Nia shopping with Robyn, and focus on telling Iain tomorrow."
Lily nodded, knowing that Ethan's words were true. Her mobile began to vibrate from her pocket and when she looked at the caller ID, she saw that it was her mother calling.
"I need to get this," Lily whispered. "Catch up soon?"
"Of course," Ethan said, opening the door of the staffroom. "Um...Are you back at work now?" He asked, his hand on the door handle.
"I start Monday," Lily said with a small smile on her face. "Thanks Ethan."
"You're welcome," he said. "You know where I am if you need me."
As soon as Ethan had left the room, Lily sat down beside her daughter and answered the phone. Immediately, her mother began a rant down the phone to her, questioning over and over again whether or not she'd spoken to Iain yet. Li Na was great with Nia, and Nia really enjoyed spending time with her grandma, but she didn't agree with the majority of Lily's choices. She'd wanted her to tell Iain from the very start that he had a daughter, instead of leaving it seven years. She also said that Lily should have told him she was returning to Holby, instead of showing up randomly on the doorstep.
Lily knew that she just wanted her and Nia to be happy, and she felt incredibly guilty about leaving Iain in the dark, but it was her life at the end of the day.
"Mother. Stop this," Lily sighed, running a hand through her hair in frustration. "I know what I'm doing, alright?"
"Is that Nai Nai?" Nia piped up, her eyes wide with happiness. "Can I speak to her?"
"Ssshh, baby," Lily whispered softly, and held a finger to her lips. "In a second, alright?"
"How can you be scared of Nai Nai when she is so sweet and caring?" Nia said. "I mean with you, I have reason to be scared!"
Lily gave her a playful and gentle shove, smiling at her comment, as she continued to listen to Li Na's words down the phone. She was on a proper rant now, barely taking the time to breathe. Nia cracked up laughing and shoved Lily back, crawling onto her lap so that she could try and get a better listen at what her grandma was saying.
"You know how much I loved your father but he too had this selfish streak. He ended up hurting the people he loved the most, and I don't want you to make the same mistake. We both know you have never loved anyone the way you love Iain. You've always fought for your career and that's served you well, but now it's time to fight for something more."
"I know," Lily sighed, her arm around Nia's waist. "I'm sorry. I think Nia wants to talk to you so I'll pass her over, okay?"
Before her mum could say anything else, she handed the phone over to Nia and thought about what she'd just been told. She really did not want to pass on a selfish attitude to Nia. Nia was such a caring girl, although she did have a slight attitude and temper, but she was lovely. Lily had to do what's best for her daughter.
"Don't worry, Nai Nai," Nia said to her grandmother. "I'll keep an eye on her."
So in case you didn't realise this, Nai Nai is chinese for grandmother. I also realised that Nai Nai and Li Na, both seem like Nia as well, haha. That wasn't my intention, but it's pretty cool.
Thank you for such a lovely response on the first chapter. I hope you enjoyed the update.
Also, I hope you liked the Ethan and Lily scene. They've been best friends for ages, so I was kind of annoyed that they didn't have a goodbye scene between them in the episode x
