Jessica

Jessica knew later that she was dreaming. But the events that played our before her felt more real than anything in her life.

She was in a large room, with tapestries filled with images of people in ancient clothing and draconic creatures. It was the biggest room she had seen in her life, and a part of her knew that she was in a castle. It was night. The light of the moon shone through the open windows high above her. It was offset by the light of the torches positioned on the walls spread out every few feet apart.

Jessica was wearing some kind of robe that covered her arms and torso, but exposed most of her legs. It was blue, and had two cloths that extended from her waist down to her knees, one in her front and one on her back. On her waist, she wore a belt that felt heavier on her left side. When Jessica looked, she saw why. On her left side was a sheath, and the hilt of a silver sword. As she often did when she dreamed, Jessica "remembered" information from a fabricated past life. She knew that the sword was second hand. It wasn't made for her personally, but it served her well in many battles.

Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and her long bangs clung braided to the sides of her head. Convenient for sword fighting, she remembered. Nothing blocked her eyes.

Jessica looked beside her. There was a man standing there. He looked not much older than her, maybe about 3 years older. He was tall, and had a lot of muscle tone, but not enough to be ugly. His arms were big and strong. He had white skin, and dark blue hair that hung loosely around his head in an untamed tussle. He was wearing regal-looking clothing, of the same era as her, Jessica knew. His torso and legs were covered in cloth and armour, but his arms were exposed. His chest plate was white with a beautiful gold pattern on the front. His pants were blue. His boots were a dark brown leather. He also wore a cape that almost touched the ground, the colour matching his pants perfectly.

Jessica noticed that his left shoulder had a large mark on it. She knew it was a birthmark, like her own. It was round and black, almost like a tattoo. The shape flared out at the sides and met at the bottom. It almost looked like an eye or a glass bead.

But the feature that struck Jessica the most was his eyes. They were a bright and brilliant blue. They looked sharp, but not cold. It was the colour of the sky on a clear spring day. She could get lost looking into his eyes. He was a very handsome man.

He had a sword of his own brandished in front of him. Jessica remembered that unlike her own, his blade was one of a kind. Only he wielded it. It was passed down his bloodline for thousands of years. It never wore, and it still looked and functioned as if it were brand new.

Jessica looked ahead of her and found another man, who couldn't be farther from her companion. He was reed thin, and almost 6'8". He had dark skin, but it looked unnatural. It was a sickening mix of brown and purple. He had cold, yellow eyes and a triangular, reptilian-like face. In fact, his whole being seemed reptilian. His movements were quick and precise, like a snake. He wore black robes with purple embroidering. He was holding what appeared to be an ancient tome.

The man beside Jessica charged at the reptile. The taller man responded with a muttering in some sort of strange language, and a ball of fire appeared in his hand. He threw it.

Quickly, Jessica threw out her right hand, and a bolt of lightning emerged from her palm and shot out toward the fire. When they met, they collided and exploded into sparks. The caped man continued his charge and swung a wide arc forward with his sword. Th tall man jumped backward to dodge. He turned to Jessica and glared.

Jessica caught up to her companion.

"This is it!" he told her. "Our final battle!" He turned to Jessica and smiled. His voice was low and, Jessica knew, was normally very warm. But at the moment, he sounded determined.

"You're one of us, Jessica, and no "destiny" can change that. Now let's kill this dastard and be done with it!"

Jessica felt a rush of gratitude. Without another word, they re-established battle positions. Jessica pulled out her sword. They both took aim at their target.

The reptilian man laughed at them.

"Why do you resist?" he asked. "Fools! Struggle all you want! You cannot unwrite what has already been written!"

The man beside Jessica led the charge. She followed. They worked as a team against the reptilian man. They completely trusted each other, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Wherever he led, she followed. Whenever she made a move, he was ready. Before long, they had the tall man cornered.

"Now!" Jessica shouted.

With a war cry, her companion swept his sword into a deadly swing, meant to decapitate the enemy. When the tall man stepped back and leaned away from the blade, Jessica made her move. With all her strength, she charged and drove her blade into the man's chest.

The decoy trick worked flawlessly. The reptilian man stepped back, bewildered. Then he fell to his knees. Jessica's companion looked back at her and smiled. Relief was plain on his face.

The reptilian man looked back up at them. His arms began to sparkle with electricity.

"This isn't over! Fools!" he shouted as he shot all of his electricity at the caped man.

Without thinking twice, Jessica pushed him out of the way…

When she came to, she was on the ground, feeling dizzy and still vibrating from the aftershock. She watched her companion rush towards her.

"Jessica! Are you okay?" He knelt down and lifted her off the ground. He held her in his arms and angled her towards the reptilian man's body, which was no longer moving.

"That's the last of him," her companion said. He grinned down at her proudly. "Thanks to you we carried the day."

She smiled back at him. Then, suddenly, the pain started again. Again, it started in her stomach and spread rapidly. Only this time it was worse, and more frightening because her body began to move on its own. Jessica tried everything in her power to fight it. Blood pounded in her ears. She could barely hear her companion ask her what was wrong. He began to say something else when Jessica's arm flashed up and jerked towards him. He gasped.

He staggered back, holding his lower torso, and then she saw it. A solidified bolt of lightning, pierced into his body. Blood was already beginning to swell around his wound. Jessica trembled. The pain disappeared, and left a cold weight in it's place. Her eyes overflowed with tears.

"Jessica," he whispered. "This isn't you're- you're fault." He leaned forward and caressed her cheek. She was whimpering.

"Promise me…" he whispered again. "That you will escape from this place. Please…" he gasped for breath. "…go…" He then collapsed onto the ground.

Jessica's whole life stopped at that moment. It was as if she had lost everything that was most precious in the world to her.

"CHROM!" she screamed.

As she screamed a vile, feminine laughter filled the night air.
