Mathias' POV

I was just thinking how awesome it was that I got everyone to come with me to this haunted house when I suddenly felt as if this was the worst idea ever. I was just about to say something when there was the sound of something breaking off to our right. I looked around and saw that everyone had tensed up. I glanced at Lessa as she mentally searched for the culprit. I was struck with worry as her face went from searching to confusion. She had found nothing.

"I will go check it out," I said attempting to be confident. I got a tighter grip on my axe and headed towards the sound, trying to convince myself that it was nothing.

"Be careful!" I hear Lukas call out behind me. I grunted in acknowledgement, not trusting my voice, and continued down the corridor past a closed door on my left.

I passed through a doorway and into some sort of kitchen, dining room, living room thingy. I looked around and saw no one around. After confirming I was alone I walked around and saw what was left of a plate on the ground near the counter. It must have fallen making the sound that we heard earlier. I grabbed a shard of the plate so that I could show it to the others and explain what I think had happened. I took one last look around and headed back to the others.

As I passed the other door in the hallway I decided to give that room a quick look before heading back to the others. I jiggled the doorknob only to find the door locked. When I turned around I realized that the others were gone. I hoped that they had just gone around the corner and where going to try and scare me, but when I reached the spot where I had left them they were nowhere to be found. Automatically the first thing I did was try to open the front door but it was locked.

"Really guys?" I said as I tried the door once again. With still no luck I tried to reach into Lessas' mind. Even if she is trying to ignore me I can usually feel my mind latch into hers. I found nothing. "Come on guys! This isn't funny anymore. I've learned my lesson. I promise never to make you guys come to another haunted house again."

I paused to take a deep breath and noticed something was off about the door. There was no lock. The only thing on the door was a plain unlocking knob. I had a sudden sinking feeling, if the door was locked yet there was no lock on it there were only two possibilities. One was that Lukas had used some sort of magic on the door, which means that the door would glow slightly in the dark. I quickly cupped my hands around my eyes and leaned into the door. It was pitch black which only left one option in my mind. We were all stuck here in the house.

"I will get all of us out of here," I paused and thought back to what I'm pretty sure I heard the kids said. "Alive. I promise."

I gave a quick look around and set off down the hallway to my left. I tried the first door on the right and as I guessed it was locked. As I rounded the corner I almost dropped my axe. Standing at the end of the hall with its back to me was some sort of disgusting gray monster, but what I found to be the most disturbing was that it seemed to resemble a naked human. For the first time in a long time I was paralyzed by fear. As I stood there in fear the thing, whatever it was, moved down the hall and through the door at the end.

I stood there for a moment longer before creeping down the hall towards the door that the monster had just vanished through. I reached for the knob and hesitated. Every part of my body screamed to run away but the fear that one of my family members might be in that room with the monster scared me more. Holding my axe steady I threw the door wide open. I found myself in a small bathroom, alone. The monster was nowhere to be found. I regarded the room with one last look before backing out into the hallway and closing the door.

I was just about to turn around when I heard something shuffle behind me. Taking a step back I turned and swung my axe. It cut through the open air. I looked up and saw the thing watching me from the other end of the hall. Embarrassed about how I overreacted I readjusted my grip on the axe and stalked towards the thing. Now I am ticked. This thing has me losing my marbles. I am far more jumpy than I have ever been. The thing and I meet in the middle of the hallway and I prepare to take the things head off with one clean swipe of my axe. I tighten my grip and step forward when the thing stops and starts screeching. It's so loud that I am forced to drop my axe and cover my ears. Then just as suddenly as it starts it stops and the thing is gone.

It takes me a moment to regroup after my encounter with that thing. I take a few deep breaths and think of the others. Have any of them encountered the monster yet? If they did, did any of them get hurt? Are they still together? And where are they anyways? Right now those are the questions that I need to answer. Keeping that in mind I move off and start my search for the others upstairs.

At the top of the stairs I find three different hallways; one to the left, one to the right and one that curls around to the left of the stairs. I decide to go down the left hallway. At the end of the hall there are two doors. I try the one to my left and find it locked. Expecting the same thing from the other door at this end of the hallway I am surprised when the door swings open easily.

I enter the small plain bedroom. With a tight grip on my axe I do a quick 360 and make sure that there is nothing in the room. Confirming that I am alone I turn to head out. Just as I am about to enter the hall something on the bed catches my eye. I walk up to the bed and pick up the object. It's a metal tube that is about a six inches long and near the top there is a small button. I tap the button and to my astonishment the tube grows and turns into Berwald's staff. I tap the button and collapse the staff before putting it into my pocket and going to look for the staffs owner.
