Arianna slowly absorbed what her three working senses were telling her. Taste, blood in her mouth. Whether it was from her bit lip or a gash somewhere, she didn't know. Smell; blood and dust. Touch; pain, mostly the entire right side of her body with the majority of it concentrated in her hip. She slowly opened her eyes, trying to put some logic to what she could see through the blood dripping in her eye.
She was on her side, mostly. Why was she on her side in the pickup? The car had hit them! Dad! Gingerly turning her head, her dad came into focus. He was unconscious and being held in place by his seatbelt. Slowly reaching out, she grabbed his dangling arm to find a strong pulse. Relief flooded her system and she started to breath normally. It suddenly seemed really important to know why he was unconscious. The truck had tipped so his head would be away from anything hard so it made no sense. Slowly scanning the front of the cab, she spotted a tire iron laying near her fee. That must have been what hit him.
"Why am I even thinking about this?" she said aloud. "I should be trying to get free and get help. Why am I talking out loud? No one can hear me. Dad. Dad can hear me. I gotta keep talking."
Arianna couldn't keep her thoughts focused. Everything she did was a distraction. Gradually, she managed to pull a coherent thought together long enough to send a text to Uncle Danny before she passed out again.
Danny pulled his phone out when it buzzed in his pocket. H was surprised to see a text from Arianna. The surprise quickly turned to alarm as he read. Truck flipd dad sleep i tired tooo help
Danny immediately dialed his partner. When he received no answer, he tried Arianna's, nothing. He shot a quick glance to confirm Grace was still absorbed in her homework then forwarded the text to Chin before dialing.
"Hey, Danny, what's up?" Chin answered.
"Chin, I just sent you a text. I need to know how to activated the tracking app on the phones to find the cars," Danny pushed out.
"Hang on, let me read the text," Chin said pulling the phone away far enough to do so while turning on the speaker. "This from Arianna?"
"Yeah. I tried calling her and Steve but they didn't answer."
"Okay. Kono's here. I'll have her use her phone while we stay connected," Chin stated.
Kono, who'd been reading over her cousin's shoulder was already working. "Steve's truck's GPS has them in Waimanalo. Phones are there too."
"Send emergency out there. I've got to grab a sitter of Grace and I'll meet you there," Danny demanded.
Though it took only a few minutes to get the neighbor to watch Grace, it seemed like forever before he was able to get on his way, lights and siren running. It was unlikely he'd beat the ambulance or Chin and Kono but Danny needed to be there.
Steve slowly opened his eyes. His vision was slightly blurry so he blinked a couple of times to see if it would help. Things were a little cleared so he took it as a positive. He was actually more worried about the buzzing in his ears. Arianna! Steve jerked his head to find her only to bring on a wave of vertigo and a stabbing pain from his head, through his neck, to his toes. He fought the urge to black out again, breathing deeply and concentrating on the dashboard. Finally the feeling faded, leaving him clammy and sweating. He tried for a more controlled movement but the pain wouldn't let him. He gave up that tactic. The way he was hanging from his seatbelt prevented him reaching out for her, not that his limbs were cooperating anyway. Several more deep breaths confirmed his ribs were bruised, not broken, from the pull of the belt. Man, he wished he could make his appendages obey. At least the bees nesting in his head were dying down.
The clock on the dash told him they'd been like this for thirty minutes or so. Why had no one stopped to help? The road wasn't that isolated. The view through the windscreen led him to guess that they had slid down the embankment. That would explain it, no one could see them. A groan from below him brought him out of his musings.
"Dad?" came the pleading cry. He must have made some kind of acknowledging move because Arianna continued, "Hang on. I've got to get the seatbelt undone."
He could feel every jerk and jolt as Arianna extricated herself and maneuvered enough to be able to face him. "Are you okay?" he asked when she could see his lips.
"Bruised and battered but I think I'm okay," she replied.
"Your head's bleeding," he stated.
"Yeah, so's yours. How are you?"
"Can't move my neck and my arms and legs aren't cooperating," he admitted.
"That doesn't sound good," she replied worriedly.
"Probably a pinched nerve. We need to call for help," Steve said.
"My phone says I texted Danny earlier. I don't remember doing it," she frowned.
"Well you must have cause I hear sirens."
"Yay me," she said as she collapsed down.
Even though she couldn't hear his anguished, "Arianna!" she whispered, "It's okay. My hip won't hold me up anymore."
Steve saw the rescue team through the window. His jerky movements caught Arianna's attention. "Help has arrived," she sighed.
By the time Danny, Chin and Kono arrived at the scene, the EMT's had Arianna on a stretcher and the rescue workers were bracing Steve's body as they cut through the seatbelt. They had a body board ready and had already placed a cervical collar to protect his neck. Danny was impressed by the four man team as they worked through the side window and the opening where the windshield use to be. Knowing he'd only be in the way if he went to Steve, he joined his teammates at the back of the ambulance with Arianna whose eyes were closed.
"How is she?" he asked the closest EMT.
"We're having problems with evaluating. She's not always responsive," the young man answered.
"Are you asking when she can see your mouth?" Danny inquired roughly.
"Uh, no, sir. She hasn't opened her eyes much."
Muttering, "She's deaf, you idiot!" Danny moved so he was blocking the sun while gently taking his niece's hand and fingerspelling his name into it.
Arianna's eyes flew open. "Uncle Danny, how's Dad?" she begged frantically.
"They're getting him out now. How are you?"
"I have a headache and my right hip is throbbing," she confessed.
Danny turned slightly to the EMT. "You get that?"
"Yes. Sorry about the misunderstanding, Detective. Let's get her loaded."
Danny conveyed the message. "I'm not going anywhere until Dad does," Arianna stated, trying to sit up.
Danny shook his head at the EMT before the guy could say anything. "You heard the lady. She'll be okay till then?"
The guy didn't look too happy but he nodded anyway.
Chin and Kono had watched silently until this point with Kono holding Arianna's other hand and Chin's hand resting on her shoulder. "What happened?" he asked gently.
"We were run off the road," Arianna said.
"Are you sure?" Chine questioned with raised eyebrows.
"Positive. There was a car in front of us driving recklessly. Dad took his had off the wheel to flip on the siren and a car his us on the back side," Arianna stated.
There wasn't time for more questions because Steve was being brought up the embankment to the second waiting ambulance. He was strapped to a backboard, unable to move, but his voice could still be heard. "Where's my daughter! I need to see my daughter!"
"Kono, go reassure the boss. Chin, we need to preserve what's left of the crime scene. I'm gonna ride with Arianna and I'll call Lou on the way," Danny instructed. He tossed his keys to Kono before he climbed into the ambulance beside the young girl. "You drop that off at Queen's for me later, please?"
"On it," Kono replied, heading over to calm down their boss.
Steve couldn't see Kono's approach nor could he hear it over his shouting. She resorted to shouting herself. "Steve, calm down! Arianna is fine! Danny's with her. They are transporting both of you to Queen's."
Steve visibly relaxed when Kono leaned over into his line of sight. "She really all right?"
"She's banged up but she's okay," Kono confirmed. "Arianna said you were run off the road."
"Yeah, it was deliberate."
"Officer, we need to transport now," the EMT stated.
"Get him out of here then. Don't worry, boss, we go this covered." The ambulance took off.
Kono joined Chin where he was studying the skid marks on the asphalt and shoulder. "What we got?"
"Well, this was definitely not an accident. The only tread marks for braking are from Steve's but there's a set that pulled over that would have blocked the accident from sight. There's foot prints going down the embankment," Chin answered.
The pair carefully made their way down to the overturned vehicle. Kono went around the front while Chin circled to the bed. "You see anything?" she called out.
"I've got foot prints and a table that's been taken apart," he answered.
"It's been trampled up here by the rescue workers. Doubt if there's any evidence left," Kono declared, walking around to Chin.
Chin was inspecting the straps that had been holding the drafting table. Said table was sitting outside the truck bed on its side. "These straps weren't broken in the accident, they were manually undone."
"The table does look like it was placed there rather than thrown out," Kono agreed. She moved to inspect the table. "Someone removed the bottom."
The older detective joined her. "It had a false bottom. Whoever removed it must have had something important stashed in it."
"Important enough to run someone off the road, potentially killing them, to get to it," Kono said.
"We need CSU to go over this thoroughly. See if our hit and runner left any prints. There's some paint on the quarter panel. Maybe they can match it and we can get an id on the car."
"We need to talk to Steve, find out where they bought the table," Kono stated.
"When Lou gets here, why don't you head for the hospital? Give Danny a hand," Chin suggested to his cousin.
"Sounds good. I'll get the official statements then too," she agreed.
It wasn't long before CSU and Lou showed. The cousins quickly filled him in and Kono took off in Danny's car to meet up with the other half of the team.
