"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" by Ursula K. Le Guin
Welcome to Omelas, a city of sharing warmth and compassion. Population- it doesn't matter. Here in this red roofed city, where children are loved and their elders respected there is no king, no war, no poverty and no oppression. Yes, Omelas is a paradise, but paradise often has its serpent.
Farewell to Omelas- population- now one less. The lesson learned? Everything comes with a price- even paradise. When a soul or conscience becomes too expensive a luxury to maintain in the face of a fellow being's suffering then departing is the only option. Where does the path lead? Those in Omelas do not know. But surely it will go through the Twilight Zone.
