A One in a Millionth Chance
*This is a Klaine and Blellie story. Weird combination, I know, but I had an idea. It may start out as confusing, but it'll become clearer.
*I don't think that there will be POV's, but it will focus on one of the main 4 characters in each chunk of the story. I might do POV's when something important happens though.
*So, every chapter is going to be titled. The title is going to be based off of a lyrics of a song, or song title, that I think fits the chapter.
*This chapter is titled after 'Do You Think About Me' by Carrie Underwood.*
.Blaine.
Blaine entered the coffee shop and looked around, noticing that there weren't any people around except for Shanna, and a girl that had her back to him. So he guessed that this was the girl.
"Blaine!" Shanna exclaimed and the girl in front of her spun around. Blaine put on a smile and walked over to the two.
"Hey, Shanna"
"Blainey, this is my friend, Nellie, Nellie, this is Blaine"
Blaine held out his hand and Nellie shook it with a smile. "Nice to meet you" She said in a soft voice
"You too" Blaine responded and then released her hand.
"Um, if I might suggest something" Shanna smiled softly at the two "I think if Nellie's going to sing for you, it should be now considering there's no one here" Blaine glanced at Nellie
"Is that alright with you?"
"Yeah, um, Shanna, do you mind if I borrow this guitar?" Nellie pointed to the guitar that sat beside a stool.
"No, not at all, go ahead and use it"
She smiled in thanks and picked it up. Then she approached the stool and sat on it. She got herself situated and then smiled "I really wasn't planning anything, so I guess I'll just sing a part of my original song. It's not finished, so I'll just sing what I've written so far."
Okay, so far, this girl had some of the things on his list. Calm. Check. Plays any other instrument. Check. Original song. Check.
She starts to strum at the guitar and then opens her mouth to sing. And what Blaine heard, was one of the most beautiful, unique voices he had ever heard.
I watch it as it falls
I just want to lose it all
Every strand you ever touched
Weightlessness is such a relief
Want to feel the cold on my neck
Just want to forget you ever kissed me there
I don't feel beautiful anymore
Don't know what from
Was it the cause or the effect
Or is it none, of the above
What I have left can't hide me anymore
Almost nothing left
Nellie strummed one last note on the guitar and then hopped off of the stool and placed the guitar back on the stand. She stood with her back to them for a moment and then she turned around with a smile.
Okay, good singer. Check.
"That was beautiful, Nellsie" Shanna smiled
"I agree. That was incredible. I've never heard a voice quite like yours" Nellie smiled at Blaine and then walked back over to them.
"Thank you"
"Could I ask you a few more questions?" Nellie's eyes widened and she nodded slowly "Relax, with a performance like that, I have no doubt that you won't become my back-up singer" Nellie beamed at him and he smiled back "Do you want to sit down?"
"Sure" Nellie smiled and grabbed her coffee cup and sat at the nearest table.
"Hey, Shanna, could I get a medium drip?" Blaine asked
"Sure thing, Blaine!"
"Thanks" Blaine sat down across from Nellie and then looked over at her "So, do you have any other job that I need to know about for scheduling reasons?" Nellie shook her head.
"I just moved from Washington. I lived here about a year ago, but I had to head home because of family issues. But I decided to come back."
They sat there for a while, Blaine asking Nellie questions, and occasionally Nellie asking Blaine some questions. One quite important one came up in the middle of the conversation "So, um, Shanna mentioned that you were gay…" Great, just great! He finds the perfect back-up singer, but she's probably homophobic!
"I am" Blaine stared at her for any reaction "I know that this is New York and a lot of people are really nice and accepting, but I was just wondering if you're okay with working with a gay man?" Nellie let out a chuckle that confused the hell out of Blaine. Was she laughing at him being gay, or the fact that he asked her if it was a problem?
"Sorry, I just find that funny because I honestly have no problem with gay people. I actually am planning to move in with one of my friends, and he's gay. I don't judge people on who they love; I think they're lucky if they find someone to love them at all"
Nellie looked down and Blaine raised an eyebrow "That's a very nice way to put it"
"Thanks" Nellie threw him a small smile.
"So, do you have a boyfriend?"
Nellie shook her head "No, um, I got out of a really bad relationship a couple months ago, and I'm still kind of healing"
"Oh, I'm uh, sorry that I brought it up"
"It's fine, You couldn't have known." Nellie cleared her throat "He's actually the reason why I wrote that song" Nellie didn't know why she found him so nice to talk to, but he made her feel like she could tell him anything, and she actually really liked it. It was like having another Kurt. "I used to have really long hair, but I cut most of it off when I found out my boyfriend cheated on me. He had always said that he liked my hair longer. So I just cut it"
"I'm sorry he cheated on you. I just met you, but you seem like the kind of girl that doesn't deserve that at all"
"Thanks. So, do you have a boyfriend?"
"No. I haven't had a real boyfriend since my senior year, and even that didn't last long." Blaine then smiled "And by the way, if you ever get lonely, I know plenty of single, straight boys that would probably love to date you" Nellie smiled
"And I have plenty of single, gay friends that would probably love to date you"
.Nellie.
"Well, I should be getting home. My roommate seemed pretty out of the ordinary, and I need to talk to him before he falls asleep" Blaine stood up and Nellie nodded and stood up too.
"It's fine, I should probably get home too, I need to unpack a lot" Nellie smiled at Blaine as she stuck out my hand to shake. Nellie just got a job. However, when he pulled her into a hug, she was shocked, but then Nellie hugged him back. He released her and she grinned in response "Sorry, I just felt like we needed more than a handshake since we talked about some deep stuff" Nellie laughed and agreed.
"You make a good point" She grinned
"So, I'll text you once I have the schedule down, is that alright?"
"Yeah, that's perfectly fine" Nellie replied
"Great, I'll talk to you later" Blaine smiled and then looked over at the blonde behind the counter "Thanks again, Shanna!"
"You're welcome Blaine! Tell Blake I said hi!"
"Gotcha!" Blaine responded and then waved once again before walking out of the café.
"Is Blake his roommate?" Nellie questioned as she dug around her purse for some money. The name sounded familiar, but she decided to just shake it off and not worry about it.
"Yeah, he's one of the sweetest guys I've ever met! He's extremely attractive too" Shanna giggled
"Hey, Missy! You're engaged" Shanna let out another giggle.
"I know, but I can still talk about guys with my friends "Nellie shook her head with a smile and then handed her a 5 dollar bill. "Nellie, I said you didn't have to pay" Shanna said
"You said that was a one time thing, and I had at least 3 refills"
"I meant as in only this time. And you had them all in the same day, so it counts as one time" Shanna said.
"Please take the money"
"No"
"I'm not leaving until you take the money"
"Whatever, you have to get home to pack, you don't have time to stand around and wait until I take your money"
"Yes I do. Those boxes aren't going anywhere" Nellie retorted and Shanna groaned.
"Fine! I'll take the money! But only because it's almost closing time and I want to go home and see Michael"
Nellie giggled and then gave her friend a brief hug over the small counter. "I'll see you later. Thanks for making me try for the job"
"No problem! It's what friends are for!"
"Bye, Shanna"
"Bye Nellsie!"
/
Nellie walked into the apartment that night and was immediately attacked with a hug. She laughed as she looked down and saw the crazy brunette hugging the crap out of her. "NELLIE!" Rachel Berry shrieked
"Hey Rachel"
"I've missed you so much!" Rachel finally released her and smiled brightly
"I've missed you too"
"Where have you been?"
"I've been out trying to find a job."
"Did you find one?" Rachel questioned as she pulled Nellie towards her unpacked bedroom. They walked in and Kurt was sitting on the bed with a smile.
"Uh, yeah, I did. Some guy wanted to have a back-up singer. Shanna at the café made me call him, and he gave me the job." Nellie smiled triumphantly "50 bucks per gig"
"Wow, Nellie, you're on a roll" Rachel giggled "Come on, we should probably help you unpack!"
Nellie walked over to one of the boxes and opened it, ready to unpack.
/
An hour later a lot of her stuff was unpacked. Her closet and most of her dressers were full as well. They talked about what had happened in the last year. Apparently Rachel got herself a boyfriend named Puck, who she and Kurt had known from high school. Kurt had had a boyfriend but then dumped him once he realized that the guy wasn't looking for a real relationship. Then Nellie filled them in on her jerk of a boyfriend and why he was the reason she cut her hair. Then they decided that this conversation was too depressing, so they switched it up and started talking about jobs.
"Broadway's great!" Rachel said after Nellie asked her. "I just got the role of Belle in 'Beauty and the Beast'"
"You got the part?" Kurt questioned
"Yep, I figured I would wait to tell you guys later, didn't want to steal Nellie's thunder" Rachel grinned
"Wow, that's the first time in a long time she hasn't wanted to 'steal someone's thunder'" Kurt commented dryly
Nellie let out a laugh as Rachel hit Kurt in the arm "That was mean!"
"Well, it's a fact" Kurt pointed out and Rachel responded with a pout. "Anyway, Nell, who did you say you were going to sing back up for?"
"Oh! His name's Blaine Anderson. He's really nice"
"Wait, Blaine Anderson?" Rachel questioned with a grin "Oh my God! Kurt!" She slapped Kurt again as she squealed "Blaine Anderson! You've had a crush on him since you first saw him!" Kurt turned red and went back to unpacking Nellie's picture frames.
"Wait, do you guys know him?"
"Not exactly" Rachel explained with a giggle as she saw Kurt turn away from the two. "We know of him, but we don't know him, know him"
"And I don't have a crush on him!" Kurt defended "I just happen to find him very attractive! And an amazing singer but that doesn't mean I have a crush on him! If that were the case, you'd still have a crush on Blake!" Kurt retorted and Rachel stuck out her tongue.
Blake.
There was that name again.
"Who's Blake?" Nellie asked curiously
Kurt and Rachel stopped their bickering and Kurt smirked at her. "You don't remember?"
"What?"
"Blake's my assistant" Kurt poked Nellie's side "You know, the guy that came into my office today. The guy you couldn't take your eyes off of!" Nellie's eyes widened and she went red as Rachel sat giggling on the bed.
So, that's why the name sounded so familiar when Shanna said it.
But there was no way that Kurt's personal assistant Blake was the same as Blaine's roommate Blake. There has got to be thousands of Blakes in the world. Hell, there's probably thousands of Blakes just in New York.
…Right?
Nellie then realized that Rachel and Kurt were staring at her with amused gazes. Her head snapped up and she glared at them. "I could to take my eyes off of him!"
"Sure" Kurt drawled sarcastically and Rachel laughed again.
"I don't even know him!"
"Funny, that's almost the same thing Blake said when I accused him of staring at you" Kurt said nonchalantly, scanning Nellie's face for some sort of reaction. He smirked as he got the reaction he wanted. Nellie's eyes were wide and she was biting her lip like she was trying not to smile. "He seemed very interested in you"
Rachel let out a squeal and Nellie looked at Kurt with wide brown eyes "He did?"
"Yep" Kurt sat down by Rachel and leaned against the headboard of the bed. "He kept asking about you, and then he was in some sort of daze the rest of the day"
"T-that could be because of anything. Who says it's because of m-me?" Nellie asked uncertainly and she sat at the end of the bed so she was looking at her two friends.
"Please, nothing exciting ever happens at work, especially to my personal assistant, so I pretty sure it was because of you" Nellie looked down at her hands that were folded on her lap. "But you still don't believe me" Kurt summarized and sighed
"I'm sorry, I just can't believe that someone like him would ever even look at me, let alone think about me all day"
"Nellie, you're way too insecure" Rachel leaned over and placed her hand on Nellie's "I know that you haven't had the best luck with boys, but maybe Blake could be it for you"
"I doubt it" Nellie sighed "Someone that good looking is bound to have a girlfriend"
"He doesn't" Kurt replied "We were actually talking about that today. He hasn't had a girlfriend for about 6 months. His ex was a slut"
"Kurt-"
"I'm not judging. I know for a fact, he told me she was sleeping with a whole bunch of guys behind his back"
"Which I don't understand because he's so cute, why would someone want someone else if they could have him?" Rachel thought aloud. "I used to have a huge crush on him; he really is the perfect guy. Sweet, funny, smart, generous, friendly, and of course, hot."
"And we both know that you happen to like guys that are sweet and smart. So there you have it, he's your dream guy!"
"Guys, I haven't said one word to him" Nellie exclaimed "Plus, I'm not really ready for another relationship yet"
"Sweetie, it's been 3 months…"
"I know, but I just don't want to get hurt"
"Then Blake's the guy for you. He wouldn't hurt a goddamn fly"
"I don't want a boyfriend right now. But when I do, I'll be sure to mention it to you" Nellie sighed as she got off of her bed and continued to move things around the room.
.Blake.
Nellie.
God, why couldn't he stop thinking about her? He hadn't even actually talked to her, so why couldn't he keep his mind off of her?
He groaned as he pulled his pillow over his head. He wanted to fall in love again, that was for sure, but he honestly didn't want another incident like before, where he ended up falling for a whore.
He needed someone genuine, someone amazing, someone understanding, someone calm, someone modest, someone that had a good sense of humor, someone that's not afraid to be themselves, someone that wasn't perfect, someone with flaws…
Someone who was perfectly imperfect.
But that was harder and harder to find.
Every girl that he found himself liking, even just a little bit, all had flaws, but tried to cover them. They tried to be perfect and he hated when girls did that.
And whenever he thought about Nellie, he felt as though she would have all of the qualities he had just listed, and it scared the shit out of him.
He hadn't even formally met her. They were just in the same room as Kurt talked to both of them, but they never spoke a word to each other.
And now, he could bet that Kurt was gossiping about everything Blake had asked about Nellie. And he could even imagine Nellie and Rachel laughing, and then Nellie calling up to tell her boyfriend.
Blake shook the image out of his mind. Kurt never said she had a boyfriend…did he? Blake groaned as he realized he hadn't paid that much attention to the conversation, too lost in his thoughts of Nellie. He then cursed himself. There was no way he could bring it up now if Kurt did actually tell him whether or not she had a boyfriend because that would make him seem even more stalker-ish.
So, Blake decided to replay the conversation over and over in his head, each time, hoping for any other hint or word that would tell him if Kurt had actually told him. But he was hopeless. He couldn't remember if Kurt had said if she had a boyfriend or not.
But Blake tried to shake off the whole topic of Nellie, knowing someone that beautiful must have a boyfriend…
Blake was relieved when he heard the front door shut. He sighed happily, thankful that Blaine was finally back. He needed someone's opinion of everything that was going on.
He waited, knowing that Blaine would most likely come into his room. He stared at the ceiling with a long sigh. Life was difficult, wasn't it?
He heard a knock on his door and he quickly told Blaine to come in. Blaine came in and looked at him with a raised eyebrow "Have you not moved since I left?"
"Depends, does putting a pillow over my face count?" Blaine shook his head with a soft chuckle and then walked over to the bed and sat at the end.
"No, not really." Blaine sighed "What's going on?"
"I'll tell you after you tell me about this backup singer"
"No, you're talking first. I can tell something is really bothering you, so tell me" Blaine demanded
"I-" Blake took in a deep breath "I met a girl today"
"And?" Blaine questioned and Blake gave him a weird look "What? You pretty much meet a girl every day. I've walked down the street with you, they practically throw themselves at you" Blake chuckled "What's so different about meeting this girl?"
"She's…I don't know, adorable." Blake sighed; he was frustrated that he couldn't find a word to describe the mysterious Nellie.
"That's it? Because if you can just base a relationship off of adorableness, I would be dating most puppies" Blaine joked but Blake just rolled his eyes. Normally he would find that funny, but he was too frustrated and angry with himself to laugh at the lame joke.
"Well, she's incredibly cute and she just seems different…"
"How'd you meet her?"
"Well, I actually haven't met her, but I've seen her"
"Wait, you haven't talked to her?" Blaine asked and Blake squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head "Where have you seen her? Coffee shop? Book store? Oh, God! Did you see her at a bar?"
Blake shook his head and smirked "No, I didn't meet her at a bar. I met her at work"
"Does she work there now?"
"Nope, she's friends with my boss. I think she's living with him now"
"Now? Was she not before?"
"No, Kurt said she just moved back here from Washington" Blake's eyes were shut so he didn't see the way Blaine's own eyes widened in shock.
"Do you know her name?" Blake smiled softly at the thought of her name and then said it out loud for the first time.
"Nellie. Her name's Nellie" He loved the way it rolled off of his tongue. He honestly couldn't believe he had never said it before this very moment. He had thought it…a lot…but he had never actually said her name.
Blaine smirked slightly, but Blake still didn't see it, instead he was picturing Nellie in his mind, wishing that he had talked to her. "Do you know if she even looked at you?"
"Um, yeah, Kurt said that she did, and I caught her looking at me once. Why?" Blake's eyes opened and he looked at his best friend.
"Just wanted to know if this girl would be willing to give you the time of day. You wouldn't want to waste your time with a girl that has absolutely no interest in you" Blake didn't pick up on the trace of lie within Blaine's voice, and Blaine was glad.
"You're right, been there, done that" Blaine smiled and placed a hand on her shoulder
"Blake, if you and this Nellie girl are meant to be, you'll see her again. And maybe you'll even talk to her" Blake hit Blaine on the arm at the teasing tone in his voice. "You said she lives with your boss?" Blake nodded slowly, not knowing what Blaine was getting at. "So, that means she'll probably come by his office a lot, and you're always there, so you're bound to see her again!"
"I guess you're right" Blaine smirked and then got up off the bed.
"Blake, I'm always right"
"Always. How could I ever forget?" Blake responded, his voice dripping with sarcasm. Blaine smirked again and then started walking out the door, but Blake stopped him. "Hey, what happened at that meeting with the person who wanted to be your backup singer?"
Blaine smiled and turned his head back "She was incredible, she's now my backup singer"
"Really, that's great, man!"
"And you know, she's really cute, so if it doesn't work out with Nellie, I'm sure I could set you two up" Blaine tried to hide his smirk, knowing that if he smirked one more time, Blake would probably question it and then Blaine would end up telling him everything.
"I'll keep that in mind" Blake smiled "Thanks, Blainers"
"Don't call me that or else I won't set you up with anyone"
Blake laughed and Blaine walked out of the room with a confident smile. Blake was too out of it to hear Blaine whisper "Time to set these two up"
.Kurt.
"Come in" He said as he shuffled through some paperwork that covered his desk. He had been really busy lately since this month's copy of the magazine was coming out in a couple days and he still had a lot of things to go through.
"Hey, you're here pretty early" Blake commented and then set Kurt's coffee down on his desk. Kurt looked up and smiled in thanks but then quickly looked back down again.
"I have to be if I want to get all of this done. I still have a lot to do" Kurt groaned "I have so much to get done. It looks like no more contact with the outside world" Blake let out a laugh and then pointed to the papers strewn across the desk.
"Do you need me to do anything?"
/
The day went by slowly, and Kurt was happy with how much he had accomplished today. This issue of the magazine was about ready, and he wouldn't have to stay late tonight to try and catch up.
Kurt was just finishing up a list of what he would need to get down the following day, when he heard his phone beep, signaling a new message. He smiled; maybe he did still have contact with the outside world! He picked up his phone and he sighed when he saw it was from Rachel. He clicked 'Read Message' and waited for the worst.
But it was actually pretty good news to him.
Hey, Nellie invited us to her first gig tonight. It starts at 7! I know you'll be there because it'll give you an excuse to stare at Blaine ;). You should also invite Blake so he and Nellie can be properly introduced :)
Kurt let out a laugh. There was the Berry Crazy.
He looked at his computer desktop to see what time it was and sighed in relief as he saw it was only 6. If (when) he was going to this performance, he knew he had to change out of his business attire.
Kurt glanced up at the doorway when Blake knocked on the open door. "Hey, I'm gonna head out, that okay?"
"Oh, yeah, that's fine. I was just about to leave too." Kurt grabbed his bag and started to stuff some things that were cluttering his desk into his bag. As he reached for his phone, he remembered Rachel's text, and decided that it wasn't such a bad idea, since Nellie would probably never come by his office because of the fear of running into Blake. "Hey Blake?"
"Yeah?"
"Rachel just texted me and asked me to invite you to this little performance tonight. Are you free?" Blake sighed and then responded
"Sorry, I can't. My roommate has something really big going on and I promised him I would go. But tell her I said thanks for the invitation" Blake smiled "Maybe next time"
"Okay, I'll tell her. Have fun with whatever you're doing"
"You two, man" Kurt smiled at him and then Blake said one last goodbye and then he walked out.
Kurt frowned as he left. So, maybe this plan to get Blake and Nellie together would take longer than he or Rachel thought.
He groaned in annoyance and pulled out his phone once again. The message from Rachel was still there when he unlocked it. He pressed 'reply' and then quickly typed out a message. Then as he reread his message (seriously Rachel would correct him if he spelled something wrong or if he abbreviated something…it drove him insane) he smirked, then sent it to her.
Just asked Blake, he said he already had something going on :/. But I'll definitely be there. And Rachel Berry I swear if Nellie introduces us to Blaine and you say something to embarrass me, I will steal all of your musicals and hide them from you.
He cleaned up his desk a little and then turned off his computer. Kurt picked up his bag and then searched for his keys. He walked out of the room after turning off the lights. He pulled the door closed and locked it. As he was walking away, he heard his phone beep again. He pulled it open and waited for something out of the ordinary, hello, it was Rachel. It was bound to be something out of the ordinary.
I would find them eventually. I live in the same house as you, you know! But it's sad about Blake, I was really hoping him and Nellie would get to meet, or see each other again and actually talk to each other! Haha! But hey, maybe if we're lucky, the thing that Blake is busy with is this performance. :)
Kurt let out a snort. Yeah, like that would happen!
