"Light, mother says to get 2 packs of eggs, the ones in the yellow foam," Sayu chanted from down the aisle, "even though they suck when it comes to frying them."

Her black shoulder length hair swished as she spun around in the opposite direction, reassuring their mother on her pink cell phone that yes, they did check the expiration date and yes, Light will double check on the things she herself picks out to buy. She giggled and pouted on as her mother's voice continued to fill her one ear while the cheesy supermarket soundtrack spilled out from the built-in speakers above her. Clad in a relatively short jean skirt and a white blouse, she spun this way and that, checking things off her hand written list with every item tossed into her shopping cart. Light looked on from about two aisles away, amused at his sister's youth while still looking for those eggs.

Ruko's supermarket was the Japanese equivalent of a Costco, supplying everything from 12 packs of hand towels to bargain priced designer clothes. Its building, though, was more along the lines of a Wal-mart. Spacious and well illuminated, the tiles that lined the floors gleamed in the fluorescents while aisle after aisle was stocked to the brim with the latest in grocery merchandise.

The people who spent at Ruko's were a mix of families, college students and the few sub categories in between, each keeping to their own as they made their way through the store's immense options. Sometimes you'd see the occasional run-in into a fellow neighbor/classmate/co-worker, ending after 10 minutes of polite conversation with a polite smile and wave combo, each party eager to be on their way.

Light found the eggs next to the dairy section, going directly to the ones requested. He took two cartons as instructed and then proceeded to make his way back to the cart and Sayu, who currently had moved to the cereal aisle.

Her hands held a few of the colorful boxes, comparing each to the other in the terms of what they offer when it comes to "G-r-r-reat" flavor. The nearly empty section only had one other buyer inspecting the nutrition bars that were organized on the parallel side.

Light glanced at the figure for a second, too far away to make out any distinct physical features. The shopping cart was two thirds full, mostly with things that would end up having to go back onto the shelves after being casted out at the cash register.

While attempting to juggle the cereals in her full grasp and read all their information simultaneously, the cell phone couldn't help but slip from its sandwiched holding against her shoulder and her ear onto the floor. It thunked, ending the call on the other line as the bottom fell out, the user card and battery scattered across the floor.

"Nooo..." Sayu landed on her knees instantly, shoving the boxes into a pile next to her as she tried to recover the pieces before they got lost.

The other shopper bent down as well, picking up the battery and memory card. His face was covered when he leaned forward by his shaggy bangs, sweeping them to the side so as to say something fitting to the act. His clothes were plain, simple jeans and a grey sweater over a dark blue shirt.

Light watched, immediately recognizing the face which tried to give a half smile as the large pale hands emptied their contents onto Sayu's petite ones. Sayu nodded and exclaimed gratitude towards the kind stranger who simply returned the nod.

"Mikami Teru."

The posture of the man straightened immediately, his head turning swiftly to look in the direction of the voice.

"What a surprise to run into you." Light stated casually, his tone light and friendly as he walked over to place a hand on Sayu's quivering shoulder while keeping full eye contact. Sayu spent this time involved in placing the appropriate pieces back together.

"Thank you for assisting my sister Sayu. Her multitasking skills are still evolving."

Mikami Teru relaxed his shoulders a bit, deciding it was one of those conversations where they would make their way through typical subjects like the weather and the overcrowding in the trains until it was time to gently part in a half meant goodbye.

"The inner workings of a cell phone are very fragile and small."

His hand held a box of grain bars blue berry flavored pressed to his side.

"…making keeping track of them that much harder." Light finished for him.

"…Yes…" Mikami stood, a trace of awkwardness seeping into his actions. He doesn't usually run into people that much, outside of the trains and the school's library. Generally, a faint nod of the head usually got the message through.

"We won't keep you any longer," Light said as he guided Sayu to the cart. She had replaced the boxes of cereal back onto their original place, keeping one particular box with a toucan character under her arm.

"Goodbye Mikami Teru, I'll see you around."

They wheeled away after that, Sayu pushing the cart while Light managed to place the phone back into its normal composition. She shrieked with happiness as her older brother handed her back the phone, his actions calm.

Mikami Teru watched them walk away, noting that that was the second time where he had run into Yagami Light by coincidence.

The ten o'clock news reported another series of deaths that night.

"About seven criminals last reported to have been at large were found, each body autopsy revealing death by heart attack. Officials are looking into the grocery chains, several hunches including the food being sold in those particular areas affecting the conditions of many and are close to issuing a dietary watch on the narrowed down food groups. Other means are also being considered but have not been disclosed as of yet. Chief officer Yagami Soichiro released a statement earlier today regarding the police team's dedicated effort to investigate and end the mystery". This is Ruichi Yumi reporting from…"
