Disclaimer: I don't own Kingdom Hearts.
A/N: And here's the second part! This fic would definitely be a threeshot now that I think about it. I actually won twice in a claw machine. The first one was pure luck, and the second one took some Physics (YEAAAAAAAH RIIIIGHT XD). But I lost a hundred times. HAHAHA XD Anyway, thanks to those who faved, followed, and reviewed! :D Such kindness! I shall reciprocate with a decend second chapter! :)
The Claw Machine
Even though having the words 'kind' and 'Vanitas' in one sentence was seriously wrong, Vanitas was actually and surprisingly 'kind' enough to give Sora and Roxas 50 munny for the arcade. Roxas considered asking his parents for extra munny to reach the amount of 210, but Vanitas convinced him… or at least, convinced Sora otherwise. Still, it was rare to encounter Vanitas in a slightly charitable mood.
But Roxas still didn't trust him.
"Well, I'll catch ya later, squirts. I'm just going to check out new car parts. Good luck winning that girly toy, girly boy," Vanitas jeered. Roxas rolled his eyes as his older brother sauntered away from the arcade. Sora patted his brother on his back while smiling widely, pushing the blond boy into the parade of machines.
"Don't worry, Roxas! I'm a pro at the claw machine! If you need any help, you can just ask me to get it for you," he offered, grinning. "I called Kairi too so she could help."
Roxas didn't bother to reply. He needed all the help he could get just for that silly Moogle toy. Why did it have to cost that much anyway?
Sora grabbed Roxas' wrist and quickly dragged him to the token booth, slamming the accumulated 70 munny they had on the counter. "Lady, gimme your tokens!" Sora exclaimed, flashing a smile at the grumpy female teenager in front of him. She handed over a small drawstring munny bag.
"Fifty five tokens. Please enjoy," the girl behind the booth said monotonously.
"Alright!" Sora exclaimed. Roxas followed his hyperactive brother to the claw machine station. He resisted the urge to grab tokens for the Ultimate Keywielder game. He had yet to try it out, much to his chagrin. Every single one of his best friends, Axel, Xion, Hayner, Pence, and even Olette managed to play it, and each of them bragged about it in Roxas' face. But no, Roxas knew the claw machine was a formidable foe, and he shouldn't use the tokens for anything else until he wins that Moogle stuffed toy.
He couldn't afford to upset Naminé, considering how she saved munny to give him a new skateboard for his birthday. She understood him without question and tolerated his occasional mood swings. She was such a sweet girlfriend to him, and Roxas was glad their feelings were completely mutual.
The noises around him from screaming kids and deafening music didn't bother Roxas that much. He was too preoccupied with thinking of strategies to win. He knew claw machines were, in a sense, created to unleash the worst side of anyone. He wouldn't want to waste his time and his rage because of a machine, especially in front of the ever-so innocent Sora.
"Here we are! The Moogle Claw awaits, bro!" Sora gushed.
Roxas sighed and stared at the machine. The interior was split into two parts. The larger part contained the prize hole separated from countless plush imitates of Moogles, while the remaining vertical one-fourth held a consolation candy catcher. The larger three pronged claw was slim, making Roxas doubt its chances of carrying the toy. But the candy's pyramidal claw resembled crocodiles' jaws turned crooked. It would take a claw machine master to miraculously win even a piece of candy with that kind of claw. But what irked Roxas the most were the flashing neon lights inside the neon-painted machine. How was he supposed to get a stuffed Moogle with such distractions?
Sora seemed to notice the physical details of the machine, considering how loudly he complained about the claw shapes. "How in the world will I win candies with that kind of claw?!" he screeched.
The blond boy chuckled. "Weren't we supposed to win the Moogle plushies instead?"
"You, not me. I'm in it for the candy," Sora retorted, mischievously rubbing his palms together. "Let's get our candy!"
Roxas scoffed as he watched his hyperactive brother push the very first token inside the machine. The neon lights suddenly blinked rapidly while a Caramelldansen-ish song started blasting from the machine's hidden speakers. Whoever assembled this claw machine was a menace.
"You first, Roxas," Sora chirped gleefully. He gave his brother supporting thumbs up. The blond boy mumbled, "Thanks," under his breath before gripping the controller. He inhaled deeply before aiming for the nearest Moogle toy perfectly perched beside the prize drop hole. He glanced at the mirror in front of him often to double check the position of the claw.
"Studying Physics isn't so bad at all," he joked. Sora raised a brow at him.
"We haven't even started, Rox. We're still sophomores," the brunet pointed out.
Deciding to ignore Sora's different sense of humor, Roxas glanced at the flashing timer in front of him. Fourteen seconds left.
The shadow of the claw was exactly positioned on the belly of the Moogle. "Good enough for me," Roxas murmured. He pressed the blinking red button at the right side of the controller and watched the claw descend flawlessly onto the toy' stuffed belly. Sora excitedly watched the claws clutch the Moogle. The brothers unknowingly held each other's arms and started cheering silently. After a few seconds, the claw started rising, still holding the Moogle toy.
"Yes, yes… YES!" Sora cheered. Even Roxas felt his own enthusiasm.
It was a shame that the toy slipped from the claw's hold a few seconds later.
"B-but… what the pickles just happened there?!" Sora yelled. "That's just mean!"
Roxas had to muster his limited self-control. He covered his face with his palms instead of raging like he wanted to. Suddenly, another bubbly song blasted loudly from the machine, and the second claw sprang to life. Sora quickly took hold of the joystick and hovered the claw above the clumps of "Chocobo Choco" chewy candy before slamming his palm on the red button to claim his prizes. Unfortunately, he met the same fate as Roxas with bad luck and no prize to claim.
"Aw, pickles! This is so unfair!"
Roxas took a deep breath. "It's okay, Sora. We still have fifty four tokens."
"Fifty four chances. That'll take long!" Sora whined.
"Oh, get over it, Sora. Think of the free Chocobo Choco candy you could win."
The bright smile on Sora's face told Roxas that he was still eager to face the claw machine.
