Chapter 2
A/N: I do not own the Charlie Bone Characters!
Paton looked back as the boat gave a particularly nasty lurch. A sudden wave of terror overcame him as he saw Charlie's head sink beneath the waves. He reached out to grab him, but the water was pulling Charlie down too fast. "NOOO!" he screamed, but his cry was drowned out by the wind. He knew that Charlie was as good as dead.
Almost as suddenly as the storm had started, it stopped and the seas calmed themselves. Paton leaned over the edge of the boat and saw the last few silvery bubbles pop on the smooth surface. It was then that Paton was hit with the most terrible realization. Charlie wasn't going to come up from the lake. Paton wasn't going to see Charlie ever again. Charlie Bone was dead.
LATER THAT NIGHT
Paton's cell phone rang. He answered it on the second ring and tried to calm his swirling thoughts enough to concentrate on what the other person was trying to say. When he was finally able to concentrate, he had missed part of what the other person had said.
"…and I know that he blames himself for what happened. But, everything turned out all right," the other voice said. Paton recognized the booming and slightly stormy voice issuing from the receiver. It was Mr. Torsson.
"Mr. Torsson, now really isn't a good time. I think…..Charlie's….dead," Paton choked out as tears started streaming down his face and dripping off his nose.
There was a pause from the other line and Paton could hear the children's voices in the background; inquiring what had happened. "Come here straight away! We must talk!" Mr. Torsson said forcefully. Payton agreed and drove up the hill toward the Thunder House.
