Zoey ran, without stopping for anything.
She could hear someone behind her, but she had no intention of stopping.
"Zoey!" Called Kikki Benjamin. "Stop! Please!"
"Leave me alone!" Zoey cried. "I don't want you to follow me!"
Zoey ducked into the park. I hope I can lose her in here.
With the grace of a cat, she bobbed and weaved between the trees.
Behind her, she could her Kikki's footsteps fading, and she smiled grimly.
Altering her path, she headed for home.
"You're early!" exclaimed Ms. Hanson.
"Yeah," said Zoey. "Something happened at work."
"Oh."
"Yeah. I'm going to my room now."
Without allowing her mother to say anything else, Zoey darted upstairs.
Now what was that all about? Ms Hanson thought.
Upstairs, Zoey heaved a sigh of relief. she'd almost spilled her plan to her mother.
Pulling her backpack off, she emptied her school supplies onto the bed.
Hurriedly, she stuffed some clothes into the bag.
Heading downstairs, her mother caught her again. "Where are you going?"
"My friends invited me over for a sleep over," said Zoey. "I have to take some food too. We're all bringing some."
"Oh ok then," Ms Hanson smiled.
She handed Zoey a few bags of treats and a bottle of fizzy pop. "Now have fun. Don't stay up too late."
"See ya mom," said Zoey, waving.
"Bye."
Zoey walked out into the street, taking one last glance at the house. "Goodbye. I'll miss you."
