Chapter 2
Present time: 5 weeks after prom.
Meredith's test came in already. And of course, out of all the Doctors it was Dr. Addison Montgomery that was paged. Room 233. That's where she walked into. A nurse handed her Meredith's test results. She has done it thousands of times before, but with Meredith's, the world suddenly froze around her. 'It's the end' she thought 'this is it.' She was deep down in her thoughts and using every force she has not to cry. She didn't want to accept the fact that it was just weeks ago that her life was changed with a similar few pages of paper. She felt like she was about to break, thankfully the nurse broke her thoughts.
"Dr. Montgomery, do you want me to page a different doctor instead? I know that you and Meredith don't really see eye to eye but you're the best in this field...so..." The nurse said, showing signs of concern towards Addison.
Addison just smiled, the best smile she could give for the situation. "No. It's fine." Addison said. "Just like what you said, I'm the best in this field, and all our patients should receive the best care". The nurse understood what she's saying and walked out of the door.
"I'm pregnant, aren't I?" Meredith asked
Addison simply nods and put on her professional face. "Yes, yes you are Dr. Grey. And according to your test, it's about 5 weeks." With the given timeline, Addison felt disgusted for a second knowing well on how, when, where her baby was conceived, but for her to keep her composure, she told herself that Meredith is just another patient.
"Now, I think you know the procedure that will follow?" she asked.
Meredith simply nods. Meredith also winced, feeling a sharp pain in her side.
"Here let's take a look at what's wrong." Addison applied a gel on the ultrasound wand. "It's a little cold" Addison warned Meredith. Addison is really good at hiding her true emotions as she is very professional.
On the other hand, Meredith is currently feeling all the guilt that built up inside her, knowing that the baby is Derek's. And also, for Derek and Addison's marriage, as she knows that she was the cause for the former couple to end there 11 years of marriage. Meredith was busy feeling guilty when Addison diverged her from her thoughts.
"There's the little guy." As the image got clearer. Meredith looked at the screen feeling emotional and forgetting that she has this pain, and it came rushing through when she tried to move to get a better look at the sonogram.
"Okay. Now let me inform you that your appendix had burst as well, and I'm going to schedule you for surgery as soon as possible." Addison said and walked out from the exam room and ordered to prep an OR for the surgery. As soon that the OR was ready, they also began preparing Meredith for her surgery that Addison will be performing.
Addison was about to enter the OR when she saw a familiar stance through her peripheral view. She has her professional personality on to break down at the moment. However, seeing Derek on her way to the OR, where again, 'the love of his life' and his unborn child are waiting doesn't help her situation.
"Addison!" He called and walked closer to her.
She immediately looked down and stopped in her tracks as Derek had blocked her way. Without facing him she said, "Don't worry, they're in a good situation and it will be a quick surgery. Nothing should go wrong, and I will do my best to make sure that they'll be safe, as always." She told him quickly and walked inside the OR as fast as she can, hoping to never see him again. EVER. Too afraid of what he might say. But she knew that he is forever linked to Derek with her pregnancy. She also wishes that it wasn't as complicated as it is now, but she can't do anything about it, but just wish.
In the OR
During the middle of surgery, Addison looked up to see who was watching through the gallery. Most of Meredith's friends are assigned to something right now, but George was there, Christina, Meredith's best friend, and Derek of course. He looked so worried, and stress, and tired all at the same time. She hated seeing him so helpless. The surgery was successful as Addison put her 110% in that surgery. It's a fact that you can never exceed 100% on what you can do, but in this case, it's an exception especially when Derek's child is in this situation. Addison never once failed when putting everything she can in her surgeries, and she doesn't want to fail Derek. Never once that she intended on failing Derek, but she did. She might have failed him when she slept with Mark, but she wasn't proud of it, as it is now labeled to be her most shameful moment.
Derek had waited for Addison to walk out of the operating room. Addison saw him waiting and approached him not as someone that she had anything personal to relate to a situation, but professionally.
"Dr. Shepherd!" She smiled weakly, yet still not wanting to meet his gaze.
"Well... as you know, the surgery was successful, and both mother and child are healthy…" she knew that she shouldn't have, but she was weak, and she did. She looked at Derek and rephrased her statement, "I mean… Meredith and the baby are fine. They should be able to recover in no time." Her voice was shaky, more than what she thought it would as she's unable to hide what she's feeling anymore.
"And uhmm, Congratulations!" Addison continued. But as soon as she said that, her voice wasn't just shaky, it got a little squeaky at the same time as she held the tears as strong as she can. "And uhmm, don't hurt her anymore, she has suffered enough," Addison said as tears fell from her eyes that finally pushed her to walk away from Derek.
Derek didn't make a move after Addison left. He remained standing there dumbstruck, still shocked by the news that he will be a father. That a prom night leads for him to be a parent. 'This is literally turning out to be what could happen during High School.' Derek though stupidly, while rubbing his restless eyes.
