Bluekit and Fallenkit burst out of the nursery. Bluekit's orange and dark cream fur was standing up with excitement and her blue eyes were shining. Fallenkit looked like this was any old day. "How are you not exited? I thought you wanted to be an apprentice!" Bluekit exclaimed."I do, but our apprentice ceremony isn't until sunhigh, and I don't want to look like some little kit." Fallenkit replied. Bluekit bristled and mewed sharply, "I am not a little kit!"
But at sunhigh, Bluekit and Fallenkit were chasing their tails with excitement. Their mother, Mistywind, padded up and meowed "Is that how an apprentice behaves?"Fallenkit replied "No." in a downcast voice. Mistywind sighed and grabbed Fallenkit and started to wash her. "Hey!" she mewed struggling, as mistywind drew her tongue over her back. She managed to get free and mumbled "I can clean myself!"
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here for a clan meeting!" yowled Mossystar. The clan flooded out of the dens and gathered beneath the rock where the leader stood. "Bluekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Bluepaw. Aquadawn,you are ready to take on an apprentice. You had received excellent training from Spalshleap, and you have shown yourself to be loyal and brave. I expect you to pass on all you know to Bluepaw. Fallenkit, from this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Fallenpaw. Your mentor will be Tornpelt. Tornpelt, you were an excellent mentor to Mistywind. I expect you to pass on all you know to this apprentice." The clan yowled "Bluepaw! Fallenpaw!" when the chant died downed, Mossystar yowled "I also have very bad news. Ropeclan has taken all of the marshes." Yowls of outrage filled the clearing. Then, wildsong, the deputy, spoke up from near the medicine den. "You all know we can't do anything about this. We tried to drive them back, but ropeclan is to powerful. They have knowledge of all four clans, as my prediction was confirmed in the border skirmish."
Bluepaw looked at her new mentor, and was surprised to find her staring back at her. "What do you think of this?" Aquadawn murmured, turning away without an answer. Bluepaw knew what she thought of this. I am going to crush those Ropeclan warriors!
