The Meeting
Hermione walked slowly along the ground of Hogwarts, carefully overstepping the bodies that had yet to be collected now the war had ended. So many lives had been taken on either side but they had won at a cost. The final spell had come from hers and Ron's wand. Voldemort had fallen with a scream, his body had crumbled to the ground and the Deatheaters had fled in fear, they had won but Harry had not. Minutes before Voldemort had fallen Harry jumped in front of the killing curse. He knew he was to die the knowledge of him being the final Horcrux had come to light only an hour earlier, he accepted death like a hero, refusing to give the honour to Voldemort. Hermione had watched in horror as Harry's body fell to the ground. It was only the feel of Ron pulling her hand that forced her to move on, they had to succeed in honour of Harry.
She wiped away the tears in her eyes refusing to cry, Harry wouldn't have wanted her to shed tears, he was a hero his sacrifice had ultimately allowed them to win the war. He'd saved everyone and that brought a shaky smile to her face. He was no longer Harry Potter the Boy who Lived but Harry Potter the Saviour of the Wizarding World. She was proud to have known him.
She walked along the Black lake, the Giant squid was no where in sight and she didn't blame him, Hogwarts was a mess the East of the castle had collapsed from the battle and she dreaded to think how many lives had been lost up there. She shook her head and headed towards the castle, after everything that had happened Dumbledore was requesting her presence. She wasn't sure how she now felt towards the Headmaster. He had vanished at the end of their sixth year, leaving Harry, Ron and herself to hunt the Horcruxes, he had then returned during the war like nothing had happened. She almost wanted to refuse the offer to visit, he'd known Harry was to die it had been him that had informed Harry about the Horcruxes hidden inside of him. She almost blamed Dumbledore for Harry's death but deep down she knew it was foolish, she was angry at the man, angry he had abandoned them when they needed him but it wasn't his fault that Harry had died.
She avoided the bodies as she wandered through the castle, Dumbledore's office was only a corner away when she froze as her eyes fell on to the body infront of her. Tears filled her eyes and the air in her lungs left her. On the ground, blood seeping from a wound on his head was Fred Weasley, his blue eyes were wide open and the life she always knew was gone. He was dead, one part of the Weasley twins was dead. The blow hit her hard and she leant against the wall trying to control her breathing.
They were spending the final of the Summer holidays at the Burrow, in less than a weeks time they'd be boarding the Hogwarts Express and returning for their fourth year. After the final year Hermione was hoping for a nice relaxing year, though the threat of Sirius Black turned out to be weaker than they had thought but the evening that followed the reveal turned out to be the most dramatic heart pumping and terrifying experience she could remember.
She had returned the time turner to Professor McGonagall at the end of the year with a grin on her face. She had learn a lot with the time turner and she had no qualms of returning it, almost relieved to get the pressure of time out of the way and to take the lessons she wanted to take.
"Oi Granger," Hermione turned her head at the sound of the voice. She could see one of the twins walking towards her and she instantly started to look around for the other, there was never one without the other so the fact she couldn't see the second twin unnerved her. "What you doing out here by yourself?" he asked he neared. Hermione studied his face glancing at the freckles underneath his eyes.
"I could ask you the same thing Fred, where's your brother?" Fred, she had studied the twins from a distance determined to find a way to tell them apart, she had quickly discovered the cluster of freckles under George's eye. Once she had discovered this she was able to tell which twin was which and it was a fact that seriously irritated both Fred and George.
"Who says I'm out here on my own, and it's George." he said grinning but Hermione shook her head.
"You're Fred do not try and tell me otherwise."
"How can you tell us apart, even our own mother can't tell us apart." He asked slightly amused by the situation.
"If I told you that, then my little secret would be out." Fred nodded his head, his usual grin still intact. "So where is your brother?"
"Why do you want to know about Ron when I'm sat right next you. This is what all the girls dream of. Alone time with the one and only Fred Weasley."
"So you are Fred," she teased. "And I'm talking about George, it's very rare to see you without your twin."
"Yeah well Mum has him helping her and I don't want to sit with Harry and Ron or watch Ginny make googly eyes at Harry." Hermione laughed at Fred's speech and could easily understand that. She had also had the very same thought which was why she had sat outside.
Fred had stayed with her for another half an hour before George had been released from his mother's clutches. She had never told either twin her secret from tell them apart and she now wished she had. Fred had died without her telling him the truth, the half an hour then had spent side by side seemed so important so many years ago but now she treasured it. Treasured the forgotten moment she had shared with the twin who had been taken far too early.
She slowly crouched to the ground her fingers closing the eyelids of Fred's eyes. "Rest in Peace Fred. Make sure you prank everyone up there." She brushed away her tears and walked away from her friend.
She whispered the password to the Headmasters office and slowly walked up the stairs, she knocked lightly on the door before letting herself in.
"Headmaster you requested to see me." she said staring directly in to the man. He looked tired, from where she was stood she could see how much the war had taken out of him. He actually looked ill. "Are you alright Professor?"
"I will be Miss Granger," he said slowly lowering into his seat. Hermione watched him cautiously as she too slowly sat in one of the chairs.
"I asked you here Miss Granger to discuss a very sensitive matter with you. As you are aware we have won the war, but we've faced many tragedies one of these is the painful death of young Harry. A brave and selfless young man, but I have feared and have known about the Horcrux in harry for quite sometime. I can only imagine how you must feel about me Miss Granger. After all I took off at the end of your sixth year, I gave you no help in your quest for the Horcruxes but mark my words Miss Granger I did not disappear out of cowardliness. While you were searching the Horcruxes I was in search of something else. I knew the likelihood of finding all the Horcruxes were slim and I knew there was only one way to stop this. I've asked you here Miss Granger to discuss Time Travel."
Hermione's head shot up at his final words. "Time travel Professor? But all the time turners were destroyed in my fifth year during the battle of Hogwarts?"
"That's correct but I was not in search of a Time Turner, I was after something far more unique." He rummaged through the draw of his desk and pulled out a simple gold coin with two arrows forming a single circle. "This Miss Granger is a very valuable coin, it's been locked away for centuries and was believed to just be a myth. While you were looking into the Horcruxes I was in search of Merlin's Coins. Through out history there were two coins believed to have been forged in a dragons breath, they were combined with the power of Merlin's magic, these two coins have the ability to take an individual to travel in time."
Hermione stood from her seat and gazed closer at the golden coin. "What are you asking me to do Headmaster?"
"I know I have asked a lot of you this last year, and I know you've faced great struggles throughout your time here at Hogwarts and I have never thanked you for all you've done to protect this school but I request another thing Miss Granger. I want you to go back in time and change the future of certain individuals lives. I believe the change in their lives will alter the future."
"Who are these people?"
Dumbledore handed Hermione a piece of parchment, nervously she took it and flipped it open. The names on the page were no strangers to her, in fact the names were names she had known for years. "What about the Horcruxes Professor? So I change their futures what happens next, Voldemort will still have all these Horcruxes."
"He will Miss Granger, but this is about saving Harry. You change their lives Harry never becomes a Horcrux and then he'll be far easier to kill." Hermione sighed and looked down at the list once more, certain names were easier while others would cause a problem but she believed she could do it.
"I'll do it Professor, for Harry." Dumbledore nodded with a sad smile.
"Take the coin Miss Granger, you'll need this to return to us once your mission is complete. The coin will open a network between the two times. This will only remain open until you return to your time zone."
"Okay, do you really think this will make a difference Professor?"
"I do Miss Granger, how large the effect will be I do not know but I have every faith in you."
Hermione picked up the coin and rubbed it between her fingers "how does it work?"
"Hold it firmly in your hand and think of the year 1978. When you return do the very same thing." Hermione nodded and looked back down at the coin. "One more thing Miss Granger, when you land in 1978 make sure the coin is given to me to protect, if it lands in the wrong hands then it'll be catastrophic."
"Right, well this is goodbye Professor i'll see you in twenty years or so."
"Yes, goodbye Miss Granger I wish you the best of luck!"
Hermione smiled at the Headmaster before looking down on the coin. She clenched it tightly in her hand and closed her eyes, the words 1978 being repeated over in her head. She had a lot of achieve, she had the fate of James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Narcissa Black, Bellatrix Black, Regulus Black, Lucius Malfoy, Severus Snape, Alice Smith, Frank Longbottom, Rabastan Lestrange and Rodolphus Lestrange in her hands and she refused to fail Harry for a second time.
So this is the second newly edited chapter, I am going to continue updating them one at a time so do please stay tuned for future updates. Now this chapter has a few changes too it, in one of the earlier reviews a few readers wished to know more of the coin Hermione used so I've added a few details that weren't there originally so I hope that helps. The chapter is far longer than it used to be, an extra 800/900 words have been added. I'd love it if you'd give a review, just to let me know what you think to the improvements or if there is any faults you've seen.
Thanks for reading :)
