Derek peeked over the rim of the cradle, not quite sure what he'd find. What appeared before him was a head of golden hair as bright as the sun, eyes blue as the ocean, and lips red as a rose. He stared, surprised, at the baby in front of him. She watched him in return, giggling occasionally. Remembering why he'd come, Derek reached into his pocket and took out the necklace he had brought for the princess.
It was a golden locket; something he knew would match her hair perfectly. He dropped it into her waiting, grabbing hands, and she cooed with delight. Satisfied, Derek walked back to his mother, who was whispering rather sneakily to King William. They both glanced at him with a knowing smile. Derek ignored them, too busy watching the princess.
