The woman was found in an ally a few blocks away from the first victim. Her survival was pure luck. Since the murder there had been more patrol cars in the area and the officers were told to also have a look in the back allies. An officer had seen a van parked in one of those and had turned his car into the ally. Before he could do anything a figure came running from behind a dumpster and took off. The officer had wanted to follow, but then he saw a pair of feet. He had checked the woman's vitals called an ambulance and stayed with her. Now the area was sealed from the public with yellow police tape around it. Korsak and Frost were at the scene 30 min after the officer had called the ambulance.
"Shouldn't Jane and the Doc be here by now?" Korsak asked Frost
"They should be here any sec. I called Dr. Isles, since Jane didn't answer the phone ans she said they would leave immediately."
"Oh just when you talk about the devil." Korsak said, seeing the car of Jame pull up.
The ride to the crime scene had been silent. Maura seemed to be deep in thought again and even tough Jane had tried to continue the conversation from the morgue. Maura just didn't react to anything Jane said, she was on autopilot.
"Maura, we're there, MAURA!"
"I'm sorry, I get right to work" Maura walked to the location the woman had been found. "There is really nothing much for me to do here. I will take some blood samples. My technicians will come and take prints of the car prints over there and will look for any other evidence that can be founbd here. After that I will have to see the victim! Was she already identified?" Maura asked, already bending down.
"Maura you don't have..." Jane started.
"I have to Jane! I have to get as much evideence from the victim as possible and I don't trust people in the hospital to do a good as work as I do" She watched the ME do her job, keeping silent. Frost and Korsak besides her, were shocked. They had never seen the doctor loose her cool. They were so shocked they didn't even answer the question the doctor had asked. Since Maura didn't say anything Jane turned to Frost.
"Who is our victim Frost and what do we have on her?"
"Right now she is a Jane Doe." Frost answered. "There was nothing to identify her with, she was badly beaten and her face was already swollen. There was no wallet and no phone with witch we could have identified her"
"So we no nothing. Do we already have an update on her condition and to which hospital did they bring her?"
"Beth Israel. It was the closest to the crime scene." Korsak answered this time. "She arrived there about an hour ago and was directly brought to the OR. There is some internal bleeding and they are not sure if there is also some damage to her brain." Korsak ended.
"My team is here. I will direct them and than want to go to the hospital." Maura answered having stood up and walking to her team.
"Maura may I have a word?" Jane asked, going after Maura, who was on her way to the car of her team.
"Not now Jane, I have work to do"
"Dr. Isles I must insi..."
"Not now detective!" Maura said pulling free from the hold Jane had around her wrist.
The drive to the hospital had been silent. Jane had driven with Frost, because Maura had walked up to Detective Korsak's car not even asking, just silently ordering. When they arrived Maura took over. They were taken u to the ICU where they were met by the doctor that had taken care of their Jane Doe.
"Doctor Isles what a surprise to see you. Am I correct to assume you are here because of the Jane Doe?" the doctor asked his collegue.
"Yes we are Doctor Blume. This are Det. Korsak, Frost and Rizzoli." Maura said, introducing them to each other.
"I heard the young officer who was first on the scene went with her in the ambulance. Can you please tell me where he is?" Frost wanted to know. He and Korsak had some questions for him that might help find who did this to the victim.
"Of course detectiv. He is in the waiting area. The young officer has done a fine job, if I may say so." with this words Frost and Korsak left the 3.
"So doc, what can you tell us about the victim?" Jane asked, wanting to get to the point.
"Our Jane Doe cam to us with a massive trauma to the head and internal bleeding. Right now we have her in ICU, we repaired what we could, but now we have to stabilize her, before we go in again. The next 48 hours are critical." The doctor had kept it as simple as possible, not wanting to bore the detective with medial jargon.
"Have you packed her clothing and already done a rape kit?" Maura wanted to know.
"We done as the protocol for such cases tells us. But she has only been out of the OR for half an hour." The doctor answered. He knew who was in front of him and wanted to make no mistakes.
"I know it is not common for the ME to assist her, but I must insist in this case and I also must insist to have a look at the victim now." Maura said. Her tone was not aggressive but it also left no room for arguing.
Jane had been silent the whole encounter, just watching her best friend and taking notes in her mind. She could see the stress that Maura was in. Nobody else would notice, but Jane had learned to read Maura like a book.
"Of course Dr. Isles. I will bring you to her and will be the one to do the rape kit, you may assist me as you please." the young Dr. said, turning and making her way to the ICU room.
Jane was directly behind Maura and almost ran into her when Maura stopped right at the door.
"Maura?" Jane asked, she tried to not sound calm, but was feeling anything but. Maura had turned pale and she began to shake a bit.
"Jane, the victim... the victim is Becca, Rebecca Davis." Maura said, her voice just a whisper.
"Dr. Isles?" the young Dr. asked.
"Give her a minute." Jane said, already knowing that Maura also knew this victim. She placed a hand on her shoulder, trying to show her support and somehow connect with her friend.
Maura took the hand that was lying on her shoulder and gave it a light squeeze. She turned gave Jane a hint of a smile to tank her and went to the victims bed.
"Maura do you know the victim?" Jane asked already knowing the answer, but wanting to give Maura the chance to start over to bring her thoughts into order.
"Yes I do her name is Rebecca Davis. She is the daughter of Steven and Margaret Davis."
"Please don't tell me she is the daughter of the Steven Davis?!"
"I'm afraid so, her father is the CEO of Davis Pharmaceutical. She is Dr. Rebecca Davis and works at Mass Gen. She went to Harvard for her PhD. in neurology and was going to be one of the youngest heads of neurology in the country." Maura ended. It was like she had just read out of an article about this young woman.
"Maura are you sure?" Jane asked, not really knowing how her friend could have identified her with just on look. Before Maura answered she went to the face which was swollen and carefully opened the eyes of the victim for a second, before letting them close again.
"Yes Jane, I am sure!" Maura said, not taking her eyes of Rebecca and taking her hand in hers carefully.
