Chapter 2

2 days later

It was only 12AM, but Elsa could not wait any longer. She put on her cloak, crept out of her room and made her way outside to the laundry area. This time, discovering a high stool, she carried it over to the wall, stood on top and hoisted herself up. She took a moment to admire the view from on top of the wall, before jumping off on the other side.

"Boo!" came a voice from behind her. She instinctively yelped and jumped away, only to turn around to meet a laughing boy with brown hair. She immediately recognized him.

"Jack! You scared the living daylights out of me! I thought we were supposed to meet at 2AM?" Elsa exclaimed.

"Well, I couldn't wait. And knowing you, you were gonna sneak out early to explore despite my warnings, so I had to keep an eye on you." He said matter-of-factly.

"Oh my, you were stalking me?" Elsa asked with her best mocking voice, crossing her arms over her chest and raising an eyebrow, trying to look unimpressed.

"Hey, it's not called stalking. And who's the one who is constantly putting her life in danger? First off, you're a princess. Second, you're still a little girl. And third, it is late at night! Haven't your parents ever told you about how dangerous it is to go out alone at night and what kind of people lurk around at this time?"

Elsa was slightly taken aback by his seriousness, but did not show it. She gave him a defiant look and turned around so her back was facing him. "I can't believe I made friends with a stalker," she said, ignoring whatever he previously said.

"What, we're just friends? I am absolutely hurt!" He finally gave in to her little game. Elsa turned around to see him clutching his chest as if he had pierced with an invisible knife, and faking a hurt expression. Elsa felt her heart rate quicken slightly when he said that.

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, you're my only friend...so yeah," she said truthfully.

"Are you serious?"

"Yeah..."

"How can someone as pretty as you not have any friends?" He quickly looked down and his face turned bright red when he realized that he said it out loud. Gosh he's so adorable when he's embarrassed, Elsa thought to herself.

"Well, I just… I try not to get close to people… because… I'm afraid of hurting them..."

"Okay now is the time you explain to me why you are ever so certain that you will hurt the people around you, because I seriously doubt it."

"Okay, promise you won't freak out?"

"I promise."

With that, Elsa removed her gloves, summoning her powers and touched the surface of a nearby tree trunk causing it to be coated with a layer of frost and sharp ice.

She did not dare to look up at Jack's face, afraid of his reaction. "I know, I'm a monster... I won't be surprised if you ran away..."

When he did not budge, Elsa looked up to see that there was not a single hint of fear in his eyes, but rather awe and wonder.

"Elsa... it's beautiful. You're not a monster, you're far from it. I think it's a wonderful gift and you should embrace it. It's what makes you special."

"You really think so?"

"I know so."

Elsa felt tears brimming in her eyes. "Thank you... no one has ever told me that before... not even my parents..." she sniffed.

"Hey, don't cry. Look at me," she felt two large warm hands on her cheeks. They lifted her face so she could look into his eyes. "I think you're perfect just the way you are."

Elsa tried to back away from him. "Don't touch me, I don't want to hurt you! I can't control my powers, that's what makes me dangerous. What if I accidentally freeze you to death..?" More tears flowed from Elsa's eyes at the thought. But Jack ignored her futile attempts to break away and pulled her into a tight embrace. At first her whole body tensed up, but soon relaxed in the comforting warmth of his embrace, something she had not felt in years. The warmth of human touch.

She buried her face in his hoodie and cried into his chest. She could not explain it, but at that very moment, for the first time in her life, she felt absolutely safe and free of her worries.

However, the moment ended too soon. Jack let go of her and used his thumbs to wipe away the tears from her cheeks. Still holding her face in his hands, he looked deep into her large blue eyes and said, "I will always be here for you, no matter what."

"Promise?"

"I promise." Then he did something unexpected. He planted a soft kiss on her forehead. "... and that, is to seal the promise."
