Chapter 2
Remember
Wario opened his eyes to the bright morning sunshine, and tossed his sheet over the side of the bed, ignoring the noises of breakfast cooking and his brother singing rather terribly downstairs. He didn't care. Not on this particular day.
Wario's expression changed, and he walked out of his master bedroom into a small door off to the right. He used a key he kept hidden in his boxer drawer and unlocked it, looking inside before he spotted when he was looking for.
It was a small urn that contained the remains of their mother and father's ashes. He sighed as he wiped a small speak of dust off the lid.
"To think... it's been twenty years... huh, Mom, Dad..." Wario muttered as he growled softly under his breath.
June 8th... the day Wario and Waluigi lost their parents to a seemingly 'accidental' house fire. It was thanks to whoever killed their parents that Wario became a big brother, a mother and a father to his younger brother, who still hadn't come to grips with what had happened... and to this day, still hasn't fully accepted it.
It dawned on Wario that Waluigi did have nightmares as he got older, but it was always about ghosts that ate humans. It was never abut fires or screaming, but about something he read on the Internet. At least, that was what the overweight treasure hunter decided to explain to his skinny little brother.
Waluigi didn't quite know how his parents had died. He just knew they had died, and Wario wouldn't tell him the truth about what happened.
Waluigi never knew that their parents were cremated and resting in peace alongside their sons in a castle Wario built with money he looted and plundered over the years.
Wario couldn't face telling him that he believed their parents were murdered, and that what he had been seeing in his nightmares may be actually true.
Waluigi had taken a long, long time to even cry in front of his brother, and that was after he turned 19 years old and was unable to get fully accustomed to life in the Mushroom Kingdom after they were mysteriously brought there. He cried the first night they had arrived, but he couldn't explain to Wario why because he honestly didn't know.
Wario remembered how scared his brother had looked, how exhausted he had been. He couldn't tell him what happened to their Mom and Dad. Not yet.
He just kept telling him, 'Something bad happened and I don't know what.' Waluigi had fallen asleep frustrated, but happy his brother had been there when most times were spent arguing and ruining other's days.
Wario still believed their presence at the kingdom had something to do with their parent's murder, but what it was he could never figure out. And until he could, Waluigi never knew what happened other than his parents were dead.
Ever since then, Waluigi kept busy with the many pet Piranhas he had in the backyard. In particular, he cared for one that was larger than normal, black and purple dotted with white-lips he chose to name Poison. Wario quickly learned why when he witnessed Poison bite and kill a stray Goomba that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.
It was when he devoured it that made Wario sick to his stomach, and he was worried about that plant being so close to his brother. While it wasn't unusal for his plants to sometimes bite their master, that one was deadly, and Wario and Waluigi knew it.
Waluigi was rather blissfully ignorant about the whole thing, which made it easier for Wario to keep a close eye on him and his safely without blowing his 'tough guy' cover.
He smiled and placed the urn back on the high shelf where it would be safe from any damage. "One day, I'll find out what really happened. Waluigi deceives to know as much as you and I do. Until then, Mom, Dad."
He exited the small room and locked the door before walking past his own room to toss the key on his king-sized bed as he strode downstairs to check his brother. It was time to act like normal Wario again.
"There you are! Damn, it's about time you woke up you fat tub of lard!" Waluigi snapped. Wario paused in his walking, his eyebrows arched. It was times like these that he wondered just why on earth he felt the need to keep him safe...
"You skinny piece of... whatever. Whatcha up to?" Wario asked, rolling her eyes. Waluigi smirked as he finished cooking some sausage links.
"Making food, obviously. Want some?" Wario nodded, heading to the fridge. He grabbed some orange juice, then peeked out the magnificent window of their kitchen at the five plants snoozing away in the back.
"Damn plants... where's the other one?" Wario asked. Waluigi shrugged.
"Which?"
"The oversized one that looks like you. He ain't there."
Waluigi glanced for a minute over his shoulder, then shook his head. "Maybe he wandered off someplace. I dunno. He's been acting weird lately." he answered, making himself a plate of food. Wario paused for a moment.
"Uh, what do you mean 'weird'?" Waluigi rolled up his sleeve.
On his left forearm was a rather nasty looking bruise. Wario was about to ask who had hurt him, but Waluigi beat him to the punch.
"Last week, while you were treasure hunting, Poison was actin' kinda funny. I thought he was hungry, so I went to go feed him."
He rested his elbows on the table and rested his head in his hand as he poked at the breakfast he had just made. "When I went to feed him, he went mad. He tried to bite me, but I rolled out of the way. He head-butted me good, though... I slammed into the wall. Thankfully he can't move without being placed in dirt, otherwise I think I would've been dead."
Wario couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Dammit, Waluigi!" he yelled, one fist slamming down on the table. "Why didn't ya tell me sooner?"
"Because..." he trailed off, something in the window catching his attention. He leaned backwards, and suddenly, his eyes got huge with fear.
"W-Wario... l-l-look behind you..."
Wario was still seething at his brother keeping such secrets from him, but he changed his thoughts when he heard Waluigi scream. Wario jumped.
It was the one thing that always brought back horrid memories of their past. Waluigi screaming scared the daylights of of Wario. 'He was like that when Mom and Dad... wait. Why is he screaming?!'
It didn't take long to find out.
"Ah shit! Waluigi, move!" Wario ordered, getting back to reality and pushing his brother out of the way. Waluigi flew into the tables and came to rest rather painfully on the wall. He winced and groaned in pain as he stood up, grabbing his head in pain.
"Jeez, Wario! Couldn't you find a less painful way to save me?!" his younger brother complained. He never did get an answer, as both brothers were staring- for some strange reason- at the wide mouth of Waluigi's large Piranha Plant... which seemed to be moving on its own out of dirt.
Waluigi blinked in confusion. "What the hell...?! How is he able to move?!"
"Urgh... W-Waluigi! Where are you?!" Wario called, unable to properly see past all the dust and other debris. He waved his hand to clear some of it away, and when he could see, he was glad to see his brother was safe and uninjured...
... and that his pet plant was close to eating him in one gulp.
"WALUIGI! DON'T JUST SIT THERE! RUN!"
Hearing his brother's order snapped the black overalled man out of whatever stupor he was sitting in, and just in time too. He scrambled out of way as Poision came down, intent on eating whatever it was he smelled not too long ago. Wario got up and moved as fast as he could to the entrance of the kitchen, where he figured they had a good chance of escaping. Waluigi did the same.
"W-Wario..." Waluigi panted, looking behind him in fear. "What... the hell do we do?!"
"I-I don't k-know! He's... he's your plant!" he panted as well. "Why is he able to move?!"
"How should I know?! I never knew that damn- shit, Wario! Look!" He cut the conversation short and pointed down the corridor.
There was Posion, looking dead at them, and moving towards them with uncanny speed. Both men got up and bolted for the nearest door on their lower floor- one of the rooms Wario used for entertaining purposes.
Locking the door and all windows, they thought the plant couldn't get in and harm them. Wario and Waluigi stayed as far from the door as possible as they tried to think of a plan to get them out of there alive.
As the two thought, Waluigi collapsed on the floor all of the sudden. He groaned and found himself unable to stand back up. Wario noticed and went over to check on him.
"Hey, what's wrong with you?" Waluigi shook his head.
"...D-Don't... know... b-but my leg... hurts like hell..." Waluigi got out through gritted teeth. Wario took a look at Wauigi's right leg, being less than gentle as he tore the leg of his brother's overalls off and assessed it.
"Dammit. Looks like that pet of yours got a bite of of you, idiot." Wario sighed. Waluigi nodded but his entire body felt like something was setting him on fire. He clutched at his chest and leaned foreword.
"Hey, what's wrong now? Waluigi!"
Waluigi was finding it harder and harder to focus on his brother when he could barely breathe. His leg was searing with pain, his arms felt numb, and his chest felt tight. Wario quickly figured out why his brother was caving in like he was.
He was starting to have another panic attack. 'Damn! He hasn't had one since he was 15! Why now?! Fuckin' plant bit him and I don't know what the hell kind of plant he is!'
As Waluigi fell back, Wario caught him and propped him against his chest. His brother was still panicking and couldn't breathe or see what was happening around him.
'If he doesn't calm down soon, he'll die in here... I gotta get his leg fixed too and I still can't figure out what kind of poison that damn plant has! Alright Wario... calm your brother down. He needs to be calm right now...'
Wario pried his brother's hands away from him and held them firmly to his sides. As he predicted, Waluig started screaming as if someone was coming after him.
"Waluigi. Waluigi, it's me. Its your brother. Calm down! Waluigi!" he called. All he got in reply was a screaming brother and a slamming sound in the door- the plant was trying to break the door to get in.
"Waluig! Waluigi , ascoltami e calmarsi ! Stai solo panico ! Ascoltami, Waluigi !' he yelled even louder. For some odd reason, when Waluigi had his last panic attack, Wario had to yell to the point of having a sore throat to calm his brother down. He found it strange, but it worked, so he didn't complain.
Waluigi seemed to slowly calm and gather himself. His rapid breathing slowly came down, and his eyes closed as he tried to get a hold of himself. He felt tired and disoriented.
"Ah, shit man... Waluigi... can you hear me?" Wario asked him again. Waluigi weakly nodded yes.
"... what... wha' happen..." he slurred. Wario was relieved his brother could speak normally, but his leg was still an issue. He paused and listened.
There wasn't a sound to be heard. Had the plant ceased its attack?
"Waluigi. Can you stand?"
"..n-no..."
Wario sighed heavily. He was going to have to carry his extremely tall, but thankfully extremely light brother out of here and someplace where his leg could get treated. He calculated his movements.
They were not too far from the foyer of the castle, but Wario knew speed was not going to be on his side. He couldn't get any farther since he had an injured brother to worry about... but he knew, if he could get to the foyer, he could get out of the house and to the motorcycle he kept parked out front. It would be easy then to get Waluigi to a doctor...
Deciding he had no choice, he carefully hosted Waluigi on his back, flung open the door, and bolted as fast as he could mane down to his left. He waited, and wasn't shocked when he heard the plant suddenly move.
'So far, so good. That damn overgrown project is gonna pay for destroying my castle, but Waluigi comes first.'
Wario kept focused and smoothly navigated down the hallway, down two flights of stairs, and smiled to himself when he reached the foyer. He was so close now, he just had to-
"GAHHHHHHHH!"
He stopped. That plant had somehow managed to cover the foyer in vines, including the door, preventing any chance of escape. But that wasn't what made Wario's brother scream.
It was the thorn-covered vine that had extended out and caught Waluigi in the same injured leg. He coughed up blood and slumped forward, slowly bleeding from his wound.
"Fuck! Waluigi, are you okay?! Say something!" Wario demanded. The situation was finally dawning on him as his brother's already weak and skinny frame shook.
Wario was going to lose his only living family member for reasons he didn't know. What was that plant doing? Why did it want Waluigi so bad?
"B-Bro... it... it hurts..." Waluigi whimpered, sounding like a child. Wario couldn't remember hearing him sound like that before...
'Damn! What can I do!? He's going to bleed to death out here!'
It was then something strange happened. Wario started feeling dizzy, and he laid his brother down to prevent falling on top of him. He staggered to and fro as he tried to find out what was causing his dizziness.
"It's almost over, Wario. It's almost over..."
Wario looked around, feeling sick and growing worse and worse by the second.
"Come now. Don't you want to see Mom and Dad? Just let it end, Wario. You will be with your family again... it's almost over."
'W-Who... said that?! What's over?! Who's t-t-there... '
Wario collapsed mere inches from his unconscious and bleeding brother. He struggled to reach out to him, but every part of him felt heavy and his hand fell with a thud.
'Wa... Waluigi... n-no...'
With both brothers now unable to defend or escape, the Pirahana plant gathered the two victims, and carried them back to where he first attacked them, placing them in front of something neither brother had seen before.
Evil yellow eyes glared happily at the two pitiful sights before him. His high pitched cackle disturbed the peaceful morning, and the sun reflected off his ruby crown.
'Excellent. Now these fools will have to play my game if they want to survive. Ohhhh Luigi... guess who is back! Hahahahaha!'
And complete!
