Nono woke up naturally in the hotel room their team manager had booked.
Thankfully, it was a single, she thought.
The room was still dark. Even when Nono drew the curtains open, the sky was still asleep. The sun was peeking out from the horizon. She estimated it was around 5 am, a little impressed by how early she had woken up considering how late she was getting to bed and falling asleep
In a haze, Nono made her way to the shower. The cold, tiled floor shocked her feet a little and a shot of adrenaline went up her spine. As she quickly made her way to the shower mat on her tippy toes, the rush of events yesterday unraveled in her mind.
Cameras flashing. People pushing. She remembered she was asked and had accepted a lot of interviews, but the questions were so far-fetched and fast paced, she couldn't actually remember if she answer all of them or made a fool out of herself. And last but not least, the fans! Of all things, she never thought she would have fans. All the attention was exhilarating then, but not that she was alone in her bathroom, she felt guilt and worry. Guilt because she was still using her brother's borrowed name, and worry that people will recognize her and try to get to know everything about her.
She looked at herself in the mirror. She wore a loose collared shirt and baggy pants as pajamas. Her chest was as flat as a board, as usual, but she could feel her breasts slowly getting bigger and protruding through her protective vest. She could be a guy for a couple years, but then it would lead to a larger problem.
"Ugh!" Nono groaned. She ruffled her hands through her short hair in a frenzy. She knew this day would eventually come: the future after completing her one life goal. What would she do? Why do I feel so shameful?
Nono straightened up. Stop. There is no shame! You cleared your father's name and your brother's death was not for nothing!
But, in the face of what she would do after returning to her makeshift home with her "girlfriend", she was less confident.
As her thoughts of the day mixed with her worries, she started to undo her constricting vest and chest band. The pressure being relieved from her chest made her sigh. She was going to have to invest in some new sort of undergarment that would make her chest look flatter rather than having to bind her chest in two make-shift layers.
Or maybe I don't have to be a guy anymore.
The thought came from the back of her head. And it shocked her. This was all that she was! What was she thinking? That she could easily disappear after appearing on Live broadcast streaming on the Olympics? Someone would easily recognize her.
What about returning to Hokkaido?
And what of the Nonomiya Yuuta that was living in Nagano? This was all that she was! She set up life here and now, and she's just going to bail out? People who followed the Japanese Olympic team will know her. Afterall, she just set the new record and won, right? There might even be some sponsorship to get her through college!
But what if they find out you're a woman? The media today won't rest until they've explored every little dark corner and forgotten nook in your private life! Especially when you're the star of Japan right now! What do you-
"Shut UP!" Nono slammed her hands on the sink, causing the glass holding her toothbrush to almost fall and shatter.
This little seed of doubt only manifested in her brain after she when through the interview with the reporters.
"What do you see yourself doing in the future?" His sunglasses were slipping.
"Will this change your previously secluded life in Nagano?" A voice of a woman in the back.
"Will we be able to see your spectacular performance in the next Winter Olympics?" An excited slim female reporter squeezed to the front of the wave.
Nono sighed. She had answered yes to all of them, and comprehensively talked about the events she looked forward to attending, and even talked about Mikage-san to boot (indirectly of course. Just a reference to a really supportive girlfriend. She put in the extra really in for good measure).
Amidst all the recollection, she found herself in the shower, already undressed.
Muscle memory, Nono though to herself as she turned on the tap.
The cold water splashed onto her body and she yelped in surprise. Her entire body tingled from the shock of the heat change and her skin felt like stone. As she hurriedly changed the knobs to adjust the temperature, she sighed in pleasure as the warmth cascaded over her chilled body.
Instantly, all her worries cleared. All she could think of was the content things in life, and what she looked forward to doing that day. Take a shower. Get food. Maybe go online of to some stores and check out those sports bras she kept hearing about. Good thing Sora was coming to visit her soon so they could get some girl-needs shopping done….
As soon as she was done with her body, she heard a knock at the door.
"Nonomiya? You up?"
It was Kishitani. Nono cursed and yelled, "In the shower! Wait up!"
She put a dab of shampoo in her hair and scrubbed while the rest of her body was rinsed by the flow of water.
"I'm going to- down. Meet you- Okay?"
"I can't hear you!" Nono hollered. Her head was underneath the torrent of the shower, but it sounded to her like he wanted to meet by the dining area for breakfast.
She shook her head free of soap and slammed down on the shower knob and ceased the flow of water so she could hear better. She didn't hear another word so she shrugged to herself and wrapped herself in the cottony white towel that was hanging by the door.
She walked out of her bathroom and noticed that she didn't close the door completely. Before she reached in to take her clothes out to change, she drew the curtains and check all the windows were securely blocked from view.
As soon as the water droplets were wiped from her body, she expertly wrapped her chest and slowly eased the zipper up on her black vest. She gulped as she put on the boxer shorts she bought before the trip. Even though it was made for women, she had a hard time easing into it without thinking of actual boy shorts she would've had to wear if she didn't find these while walking past that one undergarments store.
She slipped on the rest of her clothes as fast as possible. Before she left, she checked her reflection. Her outward appearance seemed confident, and well-rested, but below all that she knew that this issue that was thinking about before her shower would eventually haunt her more as the days go past.
She patted her hair to make sure it was relatively dry, and then walked to the door to join Kishitani for breakfast.
