-So this is a type of side story to HeartMarked, for those of you that wanted to know about the ones that weren't mentioned in the original chapter, sorry for all the tragedy but it was just so easy, sorry I'm not sorry.
"Dwarvish marks do not fade, they endure, just as we do."- Balin on marks (HeartMark).
Balin was in his thirtieth year when he found out about the runed mark on his chest, his parents hadn't explained and Balin found out why soon after.
Deep within the walls of Erebor was a room. This room was filled with pillar after pillar of stone blocks, some were finished, all the way to the top of the room, and some not even halfway finished. Each stone block bore a name, always a secret name, the name carried on a Mark, and always the name born on the stone was the name of someone that had died.
It was in this room that Balin understood why his parents had not spoken to him of his Mark, among the stones and the names in the Room of the Dead was the name that was printed over his heart and Balin knew that he would never meet his One.
Dori's mother hadn't known what to say when she'd first seen the mark. She'd found the owner of the name rather quickly and had cried for hours after. They had never known something like this to happen.
When Dori was older she had explained that his One had a different One, that while he bore the name of the Dwarf, the Dwarf had another name.
Dori had cried, only on that night and then he was all smiles for Nori and Ori, he prayed that they would find their Ones and have them not be like his. And if he was over protective and Mother-henning, well, it was only because he couldn't do it for his One and would never have the chance.
Bifur knew that his Mark was in the wrong place. He couldn't remember whose name it was or even where it should be but he knew it was Wrong.
The pretty script was curved and loose, not harsh and angled like it ought to be.
Bifur was glad that his beard hid the name from view, or he had been until one day when he went to look at it and it was gone.
Where it went he never knew, nor did he know why and now he couldn't remember what it had said.
Among the Dead at Erebor there lay an Elf, they had been searching for their MarkMatch when the Dragon had come, they never found them.
Oin hadn't always been a healer, despite what most thought, it never was his first choice of jobs.
He remembered why he chose that path, and it wasn't the fall of Erebor as some would think it. He had been lucky, his One had made it out of Erebor, like Gloin's had, many others could not say the same.
His One had walked next to him until he had been needed elsewhere, while they wandered, homeless, looking for some place, anyplace to welcome them or even merely tolerate their presence.
But as his One treated the sick and the Dying, Oin's One hadn't taken notice of his own injuries. One night they had gone to sleep side by side, but come morning only Oin had woken, his One lay still and cold but for where Oin's warmth had seeped into the other. Gloin had helped him bury him along their path, not even a stone to mark the place, like so many others, and Oin the Axewielder had become Oin the Healer. He would only ever pick up a weapon again in the defense of Erebor, his brother and children. But otherwise why carry a weapon that could not save his One.
Dis only found her One when they made it to Ered Luin, he had been waiting there, among others, to greet them. Thorin and Thrain hafd protested harshly, Thorin because he wanted her to marry when Erebor was theres again and Thrain because he was poor, she had known her father was mad but to deny a One was beyond insanity.
Frerin had been the one to sneak her out to Balin where her One waited, they were married and had Fili within the first year, she had been worried because he had been born Markless.
But as the years passed and she brought another life, another child into the world after the death of her husband and Frerin she found out why her elder son had been born Markless, because his Mark had yet to be born.
She hid the knowledge from everyone, even her two children because she feared what her Father might do if he knew.
Like all Hobbits Belladonna knew who her Marked was when she had been to a party in party in Hobbiton.
That said, she hadn't always been pleased with the name penned on her wrist and made it quite clear in the early years.
But time passed and as all do she began to change.
Her Took relatives began to whisper that the Valar had made a mistake in Matching Wild Belladonna Took and Fusspot Bungo Baggins.
Belladonna hadn't liked that they were making fun of her MarkMatch.
The first time she had Walked with Bungo he had let her take him all the way to Bree before saying he would go no farther.
He'd built her a home when she went off on an adventure, the following year they had been married in Rivendell.
It took longer than usual for them to welcome their first child, the child that would become their Only.
Over his Heart, hidden from the eyes of Hobbits, was his Mark, his Match and Belladonna wove story after story about how Lucky her little Faunt was, but she feared that he would never find his Match because her Faunt showed little desire to leave the Shire and how many Dwarves came to the Shire?
When Legolas was born without a Name around his throat Thranduil had worried that Legolas' Match would appear across his Cheek in the years following, because Elves were more often Cross-Marked with Men and Thranduil worried for his son should that be the case.
Thranduil never expected his son to bare the same type of Mark that he did, a circle with Dwarvish Runes and a picture in the center.
He could only hope that Legolas would be accepted by the Dwarf's Family, unlike him so many years before.
Thranduil would have faded long ago were it not for the promise that he had made to his MarkMatch.
"Live, have children of your own, watch over my line until it falls and know that I will always return for you."-Durin to Thranduil.
Thranduil waited for Durin's most recent incarnation to be born, it would be soon, within the next century because his Mark burned and ached, like it always did before Durin's rebirth. Maybe this time Durin would be born to a family that would be willing to allow them at least one life together.
It took Bilbo two years to understand why Thranduil had protested to the naming of Anduil.
He stared at the Elvish script that wrapped around his youngest son's throat and wondered how he would explain this to Thranduil, Thorin, or better yet how he would explain this to Anduil when he was older.
Not only was he Durin the Deathless, but also Thranduil's Match. Bilbo frowned, was Thranduil's Heartmark Anduil's name or Durin's?
"It changes to the name he bares each life, only when he remembers or dies does it return to the original. It burns when it is close to his birth; it is how I know he is here. I knew it was your son because you were the only one close to birth, it is why I stayed, he is always difficult to birth, more often than not his barer dies in the process."- Turanduil to Bilbo.
As a child Legolas had never known he was different, he was a child and he was precious.
His mother, after his birth, had returned to Lothlorien. Where she found her Match and when he visited for the first and last time she had had another child, at the time he had not understood, he had thought she had replaced him and in a way she had.
Ada explained that his Match was gone and he needed an Heir and had requested someone willing to bare and part with a child, his mother had been willing.
Legolas had refused to go back and Ada hadn't made him, neither had his Mother.
When the circled Runes had appeared on his chest over his heart two decades after the fall of Erebor Legolas had panicked and ran to his Ada to see if he had an explanation and he did, but his eyes were sad and wistful.
His Match was a Dwarf, of Durin's line no less; more likely than not newly born, still a babe and would be for some time. Legolas could wait, he had for this long after all but still he wondered about his Ada's sad eyes and broken smile when he had asked permission to marry his Dwarf.
Under a strip of leather, wrapped tight about his throat was an Elf's name, hidden from eyes that would mock and pity.
Gimli would become the greatest warrior, so great that his Elven Match would be forced to accept him. He was angry that his chance to do so on the quest for Erebor was denied.
Thorin told him he needn't worry, he would have his chance.
Iris was the eldest of eight and the only one with her Mark about her wrist. It would be years before Miss Prim would allow her to court her second child and many more years before she would learn the secrets to having a child of their own.
Apparently two females having children, like two males, was not unusual for Hobbits, although several females had sat in shocked silence when Da had told them that, as had several males, one or two Dwarvish girls had cried because , she later found out that they had been denied their MarkMatch because their Ones were female rather than Male.
Da insisted that that would stop. There ways infertile couples could have children without baring them, just as sometimes if a spouse died before a child was had, there were ways to have one if the remaining wanted a child without betraying their Marked.
Da, Hamfast, and Primula started using these methods to give those that wished them, children, more than half of them resulted in female children and Ada asked why Da's parents hadn't employed this method to have more children.
Da had said it was because they had been happy with just him and Fostering children already born.
Frerin was born the third winter Da spent in Erebor and he preferred the greenery outside the mountain to the mountain itself, Ada thought that might be due to the Elvish script that curled about his throat, the same as Amy, Ame, Saph, and Sly. When Syl and Saph were old enough they would seek out their Marks, beginning in Lothlorien before going to Rivendell and ending in the Kingdom of Thranduil.
Gimli and Legolas would accompany them in their search. They would end in Thranduil kingdom for their Wedding and maybe to see the Betrothal ceremony of Anduil and his king, the one he had been reborn to have.
Eris was the youngest of eight and the only child of her parents to bare a name over her heart.
Ada would help her search when she came of age as would Uncle Kili and Uncle Fili, the way every Dwarf searched.
Her siblings had it easy, they all had FaceNames on their wrists or their necks, Eris had a secret Name and a bypicture, like Da had.
All of them had seen a rendition of the Mark, it was placed in the corner of their baby blanket, the one's that Da had made to tell Ada that he was carrying a child, he had had to make another blanket after each of the twins were born so that they would each have one for when they went off and had children of their own.
Her siblings were told stories from the libraries of Erebor or Ada about their Marks but Eris was glad for her HeartMark because she was told the same stories by Da that he had been told by his Mother.
Beorn came to every birthday, nameday, o r other celebration for Thorin's and Bilbo's children. He brought Honey and toys that he carved and on their coming of age he brought a rock of Mithril for each of them, a small rock but Mithril it was.
It had been Thorin that asked why he came to each celebration. Beorn had answered that it was the same reason he had helped them on their quest.
Thorin had frowned in confusion and Bilbo had told him to drop it, and drop it Thorin had.
Shapechangers had Marks, sam as all but Wizards, being that Beorn was the last Shapechanger Beorn had never expected a Mark to appear just above his groin, 'Changers were just as possessive as Dwarves.
Perhaps that was why he hadn't noticed at first when his Mark had appeared because it wasn't where it was meant to be.
Over his heart was the secret name given to a Dwarf of Durin's line, a Dwarf dead in the Battle of Moria. The dead uncle of Thorin's children, and Thorn's dead brother. A Dwarf that had carried Beorn's name above his groin until the day he had died.
The reason Beorn had helped Thorn's quest, saved his life, and those of his nephews, the reason he brought gifts to every celebration for Thorin's children.
Because if nothing else Skinchangers are protective and loyal to family and the only Family Beorn had left was the Dwarvish and Hobbitishones Frerin, Thorin's brother, had left behind.
"I don't know where Wizards have theirs(Marks)." Bilbo on Marks. (Heartmark).
Istari didn't have Marks.
Gandalf was not sure if it was a result of having always been on Arda or if it was something else entirely. He wondered often who and where his Mark would be if it was possible and where his name would be in return. Would his Mark be on his cheek, a Man, his wrist, a Hobbit, his neck, an Elf, over his heart, a Dwarf, or above his groin, a Skinchanger? He would never know for he would never have a Mark.
A small part of him envied the others of Arda for having their Match within reach, another part of him pitied them, especially the ones that lost their Marks or never had the chance to meet them.
Celeborn had born Galadriel's name for many centuries but she did not return the Match. It happened, every now and again, and it hadn't bothered him until she first met him, her Match.
She would never know but he saw the name every time he looked in her eyes, both of them carried his name and yet he never asked for her and Celeborn didn't understand why.
"He never looks at me, Celeborn, always just to the side of my head."-Galadriel to Celeborn.
In her eyes Galadriel had Gandalf's name, but Gandalf never looked to see.
Okay, first I would like to say, DON'T JUDGE ME!, that said, I find it sad that two male (Hobbit/Dwarve or Elf) pairs can have babies without involving a female, so I have made it possible for Female/Female, Hobbit pairs to have babies without a male, don't ask me how it happens, just know that it does. And I'm sorry if you Squicked at some of the pairing but they fit and wouldn't let me change it.
