Chapter 2
Well...maybe it will be better. As we get to his car, a VERY nice Mercedes, he immediately goes to my side and opens the door for me, a big plus in my book.
The ride is comfortably quiet with the occasional obligatory first date questions: what do you do? How long have you known Cee Cee and Adam? things like that.
Within about twenty minutes I'm pretty sure that we've used up almost all of the standard questions, but luckily shortly after this we pull into the parking lot. I really hope he finds something interesting to talk about, otherwise this date is going to be LAME.
We walk into the restaurant (his hand on the small of my back, which is good) and get seated right away. We're both silent and now, the silence is uncomfortable. Oh god, this is going very, very badly.
I'm about to open my mouth to excuse myself for the powder room or something when our waiter, conveniently, appears with the wine list in hand as well as two other menus.
Jesse selects the wine, telling me it's what he always orders when he comes here (so he's been here before...other blind dates, perhaps?) as the waiter leaves us to decide on dinner. "Try the lobster, it's excellent," he tells me as we open our menus.
"I would, but I'm allergic to shellfish," I say, laughing lightly and scanning over the other entrees on the menu.
"Oh," he says, before lowering his eyes to the menu. Several moments pass in silence when he sighs and closes his menu. "This place is too stuffy and too boring. Not my idea of a perfect date." I almost laugh, I'm so relieved.
"Why did you choose it, then?" I ask him, finally deciding on a steak.
"I was nervous," he admits. "I saw a picture of you on Adam's desk at work, the one of the three of you at graduation, and you were so pretty...I thought this would impress you." He smiles and raises his eyebrows at me. "But you're less than impressed."
"I've had bad experiences with blind dates in the past...I was kind of wary coming into this today," I admit, smiling at him a little.
He laughs and nods his head. "Oh, I've been there. Many, many times," he says, his brown eyes sparkling as he looks at me.
"So then why did you agree to this one?" I ask curiously.
"Beside Adam constantly pestering me about it, I just decided to take a chance. From the stories that he had told about you, you seemed like this extraordinary girl and I kind of wanted to meet you," Jesse confesses.
"Oh no, he's told you stories?" I ask, closing my eyes and shaking my head. "What stories? I'm almost afraid to ask."
"I'll save those for a later date, when I'm not trying to impress you as much," Jesse replies, chuckling in his seat.
"Well, I know next to nothing about you," I reply, taking a sip of the wine. "Except for the fact that you're friends with Adam and you're unemployed."
"Yeah...unemployed," Jesse says slowly, looking as if he's thinking about something. But the look it gone before I have a chance to analyze it more.
"So are your parents rich or something?" I ask, taking a sip of the wine and looking at him curiously, studying his now calm face. He has a white scar going through his left eyebrow.
It makes me wonder for a couple of moments how he got it. Maybe I can bring that up later if the conversation starts getting slow again. "Yeah, I guess you could say they are...well off," Jesse says in response to my question a moment later.
"But what do you do?" he asks, seeming like he wants to steer the conversation toward me and away from him and his work.
Or lack of work I guess. I try to refrain from rolling my eyes at this. I thought I was okay with him being unemployed but I'm starting to feel more and more irritated that he is getting everything handed to him. He was probably the male version of Kelly Prescott in high school.
"I work as an editor for a small company," I tell him. Short but sweet, that's my job description.
"Really? That sounds fun. I would assume you get a lot of pain in the ass authors though?" Jesse says, laughing a little.
I laugh lightly and nod my head. "Yes, well, it's all part of the job," I reply and he laughs along with me.
"Is that what you want to do in life? Be an editor for a small company?" Jesse asks, his eyebrows raised, like he's got me all figured out.
"No. Noooo, I want to be an author one day, that or...well, this is going to sound weird, but that or a stay at home mom," I confess to Jesse, smiling just a little.
He smiles warmly at me and nods his head slowly. "Yeah...yeah, I can see it," he replies. "A big house with a white picket fence...a couple little kids, boy and girl. Both with mesmerizing green eyes like their mother."
"Aww stop it, you're embarrassing me," I say, blushing lightly as I chuckle at his comment.
"That was a little much, wasn't it?" he asks, chuckling. "Well, most women seem to like that stuff."
"Yeah, we do. But it's weird to hear men talking about it. Most men that I know are terrified to death about the whole children thing, at least talking about it before dating somebody 6 months or something," I reply.
"I've always wanted a family," he replies, sighing and getting this wistful look in his eyes. "To get married and start a life with someone." Okay, he seems kind of sweet. Don't know if I can get past the lack of job though.
"For me it's just always been being a mom. I look at all these women with their babies and I just...I want that. People thought I was crazy for thinking that, especially since I started this back in high school, but I don't care," I say as the waiter comes to our table with our food.
"Yeah, well, I think you'll make a great mother," he says and I roll my eyes at him.
"You've known me for about an hour, how can you be so sure?" I ask.
"I'm good with that type of thing," Jesse responds simply, shrugging a little bit and refilling his wine glass and mine as well.
"Thank you," I say, smiling and taking a sip of my drink. We fall into a comfortable silence as we eat, talking occasionally. As we're leaving (he insists on paying), he asks, "What would you like to do next?"
"I'm not sure, but I'm not really picky...you choose," I say, smiling over at him as we make our way slowly to his car.
"I was hoping you'd say that," he replies, grinning and opening the door for me as we approach the car. "You don't mind a long drive, do you?"
"Nope, I happen to love car trips, I know, shocking isn't it?" I say giggling and buckling myself in.
"I never would have guessed," he says, winking at me and walking around to the other side of the car. "So where are we going?" I ask him.
"Monterey," Jesse responds, buckling himself in as well. He starts the car and I'm all ready for him to start backing out of the parking spot so we can go to Monterey for whatever it is we're going to do, when all of a sudden he takes his hand off the gearshift and looks over at me, placing his hand on my cheek gently before leaning in and kissing me softly on the lips.
I let out a gasp and my eyes widen, as do his. He blinks a few times before moving back and shaking his head. "I...I'm sorry," he mumbles, chuckling nervously. "I don't know what I was thinking." We just sit there for a few minutes before I place my hand over his and smile. "It's all right," I tell him.
"I'm glad you feel that way. Sometimes I don't think before I do things...it doesn't always turn out this well," he says, turning to look at me and giving me a look that makes me go weak in the knees.
"I definitely know what you mean," I reply a little breathily, nodding my head. We sit there and stare at each other. For some reason, I just can't take my eyes away from his gorgeous face.
"So...Monterey? What's going on in Monterey?" I ask him, biting my lip a little bit out of sheer habit. I always do this when I'm a little bit nervous and...well...turned on.
"You'll see," he says, giving me a smile that lights up his entire face as he squeezes my hand and starts the car. "It's a surprise."
"Surprise. Ooookay," I reply, nodding my head and resting my head against the headrest as Jesse drives. The car ride is pretty quiet, but instead of freaking out about it this time, I'm just content.
